CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Last November 20, 2018, the Nueva Ecija Senior High School
conducted its second annual Leadership Training where The
SSG, Strand officers, and selected classroom officers,
namely the president and vice president were asked to
attend the said event. One of the topics discussed there
was the Student's Handbook and questions were given to the
attendees to test their prior knowledge about it. Many were
stunned for the students who were confused whether the
answer is right or wrong depending on the Students
Handbook. This inspired us, the researchers, to know if
common students are aware of the contents of the Student's
Handbook.

The awareness of students regarding the school's rules and

regulations should be properly addressed. They tend to do
things which may seem normal but unknowingly, it is
prohibited by the Student's Handbook. This is a crucial
study which aims to inform students so that they will be
aware of the things they are doing for this will improve
the overall state of the school itself. Having disciplined
students will lead to a disciplined campus where students
and teachers alike will have a harmonious connection.

1
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study was conducted to know and assess the awareness

and consciousness of the Grade 12 STEM students of Nueva
Ecija Senior High School about the Students’ Handbook.

This study sought to answer the question: How aware are the
STEM students about the school policies?

The following research questions were used to assess the

awareness of STEM students:

i. What is your central idea about the policies of the

school?

ii. How well-informed are you about the School’s Handbook

which contains the school policies?

iii. How do the rules and regulations affect your attitude?

iv. To what extent are students involved in the

formulation of school rules and regulations in Nueva Ecija
Senior High School?

v. In what ways are the school rules and regulation

implemented to enhance discipline in Nueva Ecija Senior
High School?

vi. What issues arise from school rules and regulations?

vii. What challenges arise in enforcing school rules and

regulations?

In due course, the study aims to fulfill the following

objectives:

2
i. To know if STEM students are aware of the rules and
regulations that the school implemented.

ii. To know how aware the students are regarding the

school policies.

iii. To know if the students awareness leads them into

obeying the rules.

iv. To further disseminate or give information about the

Students’ Handbook to the students.

v. To know the students’ prior knowledge about the school

rules.

HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY

If this study succeeds, the students will be informed

regarding our school policies. They will assess their own
awareness about the Student’s Handbook and will be
enlightened to take the path to be responsible students.

If this study fails, the students’ internal conflict,

namely, being uninformed about the school’s policies will
not be addressed.

3
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

It is predetermined that the results of this study will be

beneficial to the students, teachers, parents, school, and
the community.

To the students. Students are the main benefactors of this

study. Student will be informed about content of the
Student’s Handbook which contains the Nueva Ecija Senior
High School’s rules and regulations are written. This will
turn them into more responsible and disciplined students
and contribute meaningfully in maintaining peace and order
not just inside the school campus, but also in our
community.

To the teachers. Students will develop more respect for the

teachers and will form a strong and harmonious relationship
with their students.

To the school. Well-informed students will result to

establishing a peaceful environment inside the campus where
negativity cannot foster.

To the community. Law-abiding students will be law-abiding

citizens. They will uphold peace and order in the community
and will be main contributors towards tranquil and pleasant
country.

4
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study solely focuses on determining whether the STEM

students of Nueva Ecija Senior High School are aware about

the content of the Student’s Handbook. Our sample will come

from the 3 sections of Grade 12 STEM Strand. We will select

10 respondents coming from each section to answer our

questionnaires with a total of 30 respondents.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter deals with related literature on the Awareness

of Nueva Ecija Senior High School (NESHS) STEM Students
about the Rules and Regulation. The source of literature
include from the web articles. The chapter is organized
under the following headings: Issue arising from Rules and
Regulation of a school.

Huddleston(2007) states that students should be involved in

all areas of school life. He adds that the range of
activities that make up the work of a school can be
categorized in a number of different ways, but, however it
is categorized, one should expect students to have

5
opportunities for involvement in each major area – in
particular in a school's rules and regulation The study by
Jeruto and Kiprop (2011) looked at student participation in
decision making, which is a wider perspective while the
current study specifically focused on the formulation of
school rules. Further, this study investigated how student
participation in the formulation of school rules enhances
discipline, an aspect which the above study fell short of.

According to Adams (2003), schools rules and regulations

are among the strategies designed to instill good conduct
of students. This implies self- control, orderliness, good
behavior and obedience to school authority In a proper
learning situation, a disciplined student is the one
expected to do the right thing at the right time
(Kajubi,2007). Bratton and Gold (2003) also shared the same
opinion where they argue that, a disciplined student is the
one who is in the right place at the right time.

Teachers do not generally want to give control to their

students especially on matters of discipline. They are
instructed that the mark of a good teacher is the teacher
who controls the class (Taylor, 2007). The amount of
control that teachers have in the class is often seen by
the administration as a measurement of the quality of a
teacher. Administrators are usually happy if a teacher
never sends a student to the office and interpret this as
proof that the teacher is in control and must be doing a
good job thus the students are disciplined (Visser,2009).

CHAPTER 3

Conceptual Framework

In this study, the views a school as an organization

composed of people namely students. All these groups of
people need discipline as a means of achieving the desired
organizational goals and objectives through setting rules
and regulations and once broken to be followed by
prescribed punishments. On the other hand views a school as
an organization with a head teacher able to apply
leadership skills so as to gain willing cooperation from
teachers, students and non-teaching staff through the use
of rules and regulations set by management.

In application of McGregor’s theory to this study, the main

variables are school rules and regulations for efficient
management and administration of punishments to students
who do not abide by school rules and regulations and time
management that refers to the effective utilization of time
allocated to individual activities in an education
institution. These activities include both classroom and
outdoor work.

8
Operational Definition of Key Terms

Discipline refers to the means by which school staff

maintain order and regulate the behaviors of students,
involving rules that govern goal orientation and behavior
inside and outside the institution, including the
socialization processes that happen in the school.

School Rules principles or orders which guide behavior in

school. For example, all Stem students are expected to be
in school uniforms when in school. Normally, school rules
are made by the head.

School Regulations are usually more official than rules

because they ar drawn up by the school board. They are a
definite set of standards that must be adhered to at all
cost. Standards that cannot change, must not change, and
will be followed or else there will be consequences, legal
or otherwise. Regulations differ with rules in that rules
can be altered from time to time upon complaint and review.
Some can be bent or broken without any real consequences to
follow.

Awareness is the ability of the student to directly know

and perceive. It is a state wherein subject is aware of
some information about the rules and regulation.

9
Research Design

This is a case study based on using questionnaires to

obtained data regarding the students' awareness of the
school's rules and regulations. We used qualitative method
as they can reveal new information and provide insights
that can be critical in order to understand the challenges
that hinders the students to be ignorant about the school's
rules and regulations. This design was relevant to this
study as it holds the potential for additional hypotheses
to be established upon its foundations (Sigmafrued,2011).
The variables for this study included the volunteer
students' perceptions of rules and regulations. The study
involved analysis of the students' knowledge of the
school's handbook.

Research Instruments

The study instruments included questionnaires for volunteer

STEM students and the Nueva Ecija Senior High School
handbook. Unstructured questionnaires will be used as the
main instrument of data collection. The used of
questionnaires format are easily understood by the
respondents. It generates a large amount of data and shows
unbiased questions which can be answered without
difficulty. It includes open-ended questions such as;

1. How well-informed are you about the school's handbook

which contains the school's policies?

10
2. What is your central idea about the policies of the
school?

3. How aware are you regarding the schools regulations?

Data Gathering Procedures

We gathered responses from subjects through a written

medium. We distribute paper questionnaires for the
respondents to answer. Data was collected mainly by used of
unstructured questionnaires. Sixty (60) volunteer students
from each STEM class are the respondents of the study.

CHAPTER 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents presentation, interpretation and

discussion of the findings on the awareness of the students
in school rules and regulations. This section presents the
results of the study based on the major research questions
that guided the study. These include; the central idea
about the policies of the school? How well-informed are you
about the Schools’ Handbook which contains the School
Policies? How do the rules and regulation affect your
attitude? To what extent are students involved in the
formulation of school rules and regulations in Nueva Ecija
Senior High School? In what ways are the school rules and

11
regulations implemented to enhance discipline in Nueva
Ecija Senior High School? What issues arise from school
rules and regulations? What challenges arise in enforcing
school rules and regulation?

consciousness in the school’s handbook, this was done in
order to identify the consciousness of the students. Most
of the answers are not informed, well-informed. Not much
informed is also included in the respondents’ feedback.

C. Effectiveness rate of rules and regulations towards

the students attitude

regulation affects their attitude. This was done in order
to determine the effect of rules and regulation towards
their attitudes. Most of the answers consist of: helps to

12
become obedient, behave and responsible, improve their
attitude. Other answers include that doesn’t affect their
attitude

in the formulation of the school rules and
regulations. It is done in order to identify the
extent of involvement of the students to the
formulation of rules and regulations. Majority of the
answer is No Idea. Other answers include Fully
Involved, Involved and Not Involved

E. Ways that the school Rules and Regulations are

implemented to enhance discipline in NESHS

The respondents were asked about the ways that rules

and regulations are implemented to enhance discipline
in NESHS. It is done in order to identify the
respondent’s perceptions of the implementation of the
rules and regulations of the school. Most of the
answers are Informing Students, Implementing of Just
Rules and Strict guidance of Personnel. Other answers
include: Implementation of Penalties and No Idea.

13
F. Issues arising from School Rules and Regulations

The researchers asked the students through the use of

questionnaire about the issues that arise from the
school rules and regulations. This was done to
determine their consciousness on the issues inside the
campus originating from the school policies. Majority
of the students answered that the school rules are
easily neglected. The second most prevalent answer
were the rules are too strict for them to follow and
that the students tend to disobey these rules. Also,
many students had no response to the question or they
are not aware if issues does exist. Some answered that
the rules are unreasonable, and issues arise because
of the students’ behavior. Few students said that
there are no issue at all.

G. Challenges arising in enforcing the school rules and

regulations

Students were asked about the challenges that they

experience or observe in enforcing the school rules
and regulations in order to know their struggles as
followers and address this conflict. Most and nearly
half of the number of our respondents answered that
the main challenge in enforcing school policies is the
behavior of students. The second most frequent answer
is that some students resist to the enforcers of these
rules. Others said that challenges arise because of
the structure of rules itself and the rules are too
strict. Few had no response to the question or are not
aware that challenges does exist.

16
CONCLUSION

This study was conducted to test the awareness of students

about the school rules in connection to the Student’s
Handbook itself. Assessments of the students’ response
about the rules and regulations showed that they are
somewhat moderately informed about the contents of the
handbook. Some of the students responded well to the
questions but some gave unrelated feedback and sometimes,
did not respond at all. Their inability to respond
meaningfully to the questions is a mere proof of their
unawareness. Some used solely their own perspective in
answering the questions. Fortunately, their response
matched accordingly to what the handbook is stating.
However, their response was not based on their prior
knowledge about the handbook but on their own perception.

Through the use of our prepared questionnaires, it was

determined that most of the students’ central idea of the
school’s handbook

The lack of knowledge of students regarding the School’s

Handbook can be properly addressed. This will come into
reality through the unity and combined effort of the school
staffs, parents and students. Dissemination of information.

RECOMMENDATION
In accordance with the results and conclusion drawn,
the following recommendations are made.
i. At the start of the school year, the school is
encouraged to conduct a symposium to inform students
about the school’s handbook.

17
ii. Teachers, especially advisers, should disseminate
the content of the Student’s Handbook and explain
its content to the students.
iii. The school should officially publish the Student’s
Handbook to give tangible solutions and information
and obtain tangible and desirable results.
