M-Trek 2010 Trek Leader Application and Trek Proposal

Background Information and Instructions

Please Read These Instructions Carefully Before Starting The Application

As you plan your trips, please keep in mind the mission of M-Trek: To promote lasting bonds among incoming members of the R
of Business community through small group outdoor adventure.
Number of Trips
M-Trek is looking to offer at least 25-30 outdoor adventures to next year’s incoming class.

Number of Leaders per Team


Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply as a team of 3-4 leaders. Only one application is required per team. Please limit answers to the space provided. This application is a
online at www.mtrek.org under the "Trek Leaders" tab.

Application: The written application consists of TWO parts:


Part (1): Basic information about your destination, trip style, and leaders. Part (1) is due on November 8th. Part (2): Detailed descript
proposed itinerary, activities, budget, and leader experience. Part (2) is due on December 1st.

Please submit your completed application electronically to the core team at mtrek@umich.edu. Please save your file using the following naming convention: Trek_Name_10TrekLeadApp.xls. If you ha
supplemental materials, please identify them with your Trek name and leave them in Christopher Walter's mailbox.

The purpose of the two part application is to identify duplication in proposed trips. Groups planning similar Treks will be contacted by the Core Team by November 15th to discu
options. Leaders will not be required to change their proposed destination, but it is unlikely M-Trek will be able to accept multiple Treks of the same style to the same destination

Please complete all worksheets as thoroughly as possible. Although we realize that final cost information may not be available before the application submission date, it is impor
have the most accurate estimates possible.

Type of Trip
Please choose between the following three types of trips: a local, Michigan-based trip; a non-Michigan, domestic U.S. trip; or an international trip. Please note the following crite
of trip:

Local (Michigan-based): Previous outdoor experience desired, but not required. The use of an outfitter/guide is required for activities that may require addition
precautions (i.e. Rock climbing, rappelling, river rafting, etc.).

Non-Michigan, U.S.-based: Previous outdoor experience desired, but not required. The use of an outfitter/guide is required for activities that may require additio

International: Previous outdoor experience desired, but not required. It is recommended that at least one team leader for international trips speak the native langu
familiar with the country. An English-speaking outfitter/guide is required if no trek leaders speak the local language and for activities that may require additional
precautions (i.e. Rock climbing, rappelling, river rafting, etc.).

Destination

Since each trip will be filled by incoming students’ demand, please consider carefully both the destination of your trip and the scope of activities planned. These destinations can
of the diverse areas of the United States as well as abroad. We encourage you to select unique destinations that will appeal to a cross-section of the incoming class. See the M-Tr
www.mtrek.org for destinations and descriptions of past M-Treks.

Special note to those designing international trips: Please select a destination country that is both politically stable and maintains friendly relations with the Unite

Size of Trip

Excluding trip leaders, a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 12 incoming students will be allowed for each trip. The participant to trip leader ratio will not exceed 3:1.
Timing of Trip

Trips may be a minimum of 3 days and a maximum of 14 days in length. All trips must return to Ann Arbor prior to RLI so that MBA1s can attend. Note that the duration of RL
not yet been finalized. The core-team will notify trek leaders as soon as RLI dates are finalized. When planning the dates be mindful of your summer internship plans. Many ban

Trip Activities

Trips may consist of any number of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, rafting, kayaking, etc., or any combination thereof. Technically demanding or potentially danger
such as technical mountaineering, cliff diving, or swimming with sharks are not allowed. Again, use your best judgment in designing activities that will appeal to a typical incom

Trip Ratings
This year’s treks will be rated with two sets of rankings. Each trip will receive an overall categorization based on the trips atmosphere. This categorization will be displayed with
on the main trek listing webpage. Additionally, each day’s activities, accommodations and experience level will be categorized based on the level of activity, accommodations an
required.

Overall Trek Activity Rating:

Laid Back: This type of trip will consist of mainly budget motel/lodge accommodations, limited travel within the trip’s region/country,
activities run from a few “base camp locations, and/or many opportunities for experience the night life and local social
scene. All activities can easily be enjoyed by a person of average physical fitness.

Moderate: The pace of these trips will be faster than Laid Back treks. A moderate trek will be characterized by moderate travel within the
the trip's region/country, activities in numerous locations, a mix of active and strenuous days and a balance between outdoor
activity and night life experiences. While a person in moderate physical condition should be able to complete all activities
some days may be challenging.

Strenuous: This is the most fast paced of the three types of trips. Considerable travel within the trek’s country/region may occur and most
nights will be spent backcountry camping. Challenges may include elevation change and duration of activities. Participants
should be in good physical shape.

Cost

Trip cost estimates should be as detailed and accurate as possible (see instructions on the budget and daily schedule sections of this application). Trips have traditionally cost in t
to $1750, excluding airfare. Incoming students are responsible for 100% of their expenses. Please keep in mind that high cost trips discourage incoming students from participati

Safety Certification

All trip leaders will be required to attend Trek Leader Training in February 2010. A date will be determined once leaders are selected. The training will include CPR and First A
The training session will take place at an offsite location. It is designed to be both fun and informative. More information will be available as the date gets closer.
Assistance in Coordinating Trip
The M-Trek Operations Committee will work with all trip leaders on the final design and coordination of their trips. However, trip leaders are responsible for coordinating all the
vendor payment arrangements necessary for the execution of a successful trip.

Selection Critera

Trip leader selection will be made by the M-Trek Core Team and Dean Graham Mercer after a review of your written application and an interview. Interviews with each team wil
early December. Trip selection will be based primarily on your team’s enthusiasm and ability to lead a safe, enjoyable and well-planned trip adhering to M-Trek's mission statem

Teams selected to lead a 2010 M-Trek will be notified by e-mail by the end of December 2009 (exact date TBA). Acceptance may be contingent on the resolution of any issues i
the interview. A list of alternate trips will also be selected at this time.
