Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Addition and Subtraction within 20

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): First Grade
Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 20.

Technology Standard Addressed:
1.Empowered Learner
3.Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):
https://create.kahoot.it/share/addition-and-subtraction/94996848-2997-4825-9a17-785fea79af88

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

-The timer can be removed if it brings unnecessary stress for the students
-The teacher can put the questions and answers in English and another language on the Kahoot by typing it in
the box.
-The answer choice boxes are colors and shapes so if a student is color blind there are still shapes for them to
identify with.
-Images can be added to the Kahoot to reinforce a question.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

The instructional activities that will occur prior to the SRT activity will be sample addition and subtraction
problems. The teacher will show the students how to add and subtract by counting on, friendly numbers,
common facts. After the students have had a chance to practice a few problems the teacher will transition to
the Kahoot to formatively assess what knowledge the students have retained and what needs further
explanation.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

The activity will last about 12 minutes and the teacher will beat the front of the class clicking to the next
question after the timer runs out and the students get a chance to see if they were right or wrong. The
students will be answering the questions on computers or tablets.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
The students will be able to see the correct answers and reflect on what they missed and think about why
they missed the problem and what they can do to get the problem right next time.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity is completed the teacher will review the Kahoot and call on students to explain how they
solved the problem. The teacher will also give students who got the question wrong the opportunity to share
what they overlooked or what they learned from getting the question wrong.

How will the data be used?

This activity will tell me as a teacher what I need to work on more with the students and what they have
mastered. This tool will be used as a formative assessment and offer an opportunity for review once the
assessment is completed.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

The learning goal of this activity is to see how quickly and accurately the students can answer addition and
subtraction equations.
Reflective Practice:
The activity created impacts student learning by giving them an interactive activity with math. The activity
gives the students the opportunity to put their math skills to work and see how quickly and accurately they
can solve addition and subtraction problems. Stopwatches could further enhance the project by allowing the
students to practice completing equations in less time.
