Keystone check valve model C and E

Maintenance & Installation Instructions

1. Introduction
1.1 Purpose & scope
These instructions are intended to ensure the proper standards of installation and
maintenance of the Keystone Check valves model C and E.

1.2 Operating principle

Indications must always be placed on the valve, e.g. arrows to show the flow direction and
symbols indicating the fluid connections. All these indicators must be visible and legible.

1.2.1 Skills & training

Personnel in charge of operating, maintaining, inspecting and erecting the valves must have
the required skills.
The head of the plant must ensure that operators fully understand the instruction manual.

1.2.2 Compliance with instructions

Failure to comply with instructions could result in risks for operators, the machine and the
environment, and could lead to the loss of the entitlement to claim for damages.
The risks arising from non-compliance include:
a. Malfunction of major plant functions.
b. Failures in specific maintenance and repair procedures.
c. Electrical, mechanical and chemical risks.
d. Environmental risks from the substances that could be released.

1.2.3 Compliance with occupational safety regulations

The instructions in this manual must always be taken into account when operating the valve,
as must national regulations and any other service and safety instructions given by the head
of the plant to avoid accidents.

1.2.4 Safety instructions concerning handling

Avoid any accidental contact with components that may entail danger, whether they are hot
or cold. If hazardous fluids leak out (e.g. explosive, toxic or hot fluids) cut off the supply to
prevent risks to people and the environment.

1.2.5 Safety instructions concerning maintenance, inspection & erection work

The head of the plant is responsible for ensuring that maintenance, inspection and erection
work is done by properly skilled personnel duly familiar with the equipment, and that this
manual is studied thoroughly.
Any valve in which hazardous objects may be found must be decontaminated.

1.2.6 Unauthorised changes and production of spare parts

The valve may not be modified in any way without the prior consent of the manufacturer. For
the sake of safety, use spare parts and accessories supplied by the original equipment
manufacturer. Any use of non original parts will relieve the manufacturer of any liability.

1.2.7 Unauthorised forms of operation

The safety of the valve is guaranteed only if it is used properly, as per the instructions in this
manual.
The limit levels indicated on the data sheet must never be exceeded.
Any change in conditions of service will require the prior written consent of the manufacturing
facility.

1.3 Warranty
Any warranty will become immediately null and void, and the manufacturer will be entitled to
compensation for any product civil liability claim filed by third parties if:
a. service and maintenance work is not carried out according to the service instructions, or
repairs are made by personnel other than our own staff or without our written consent;
b. our material is modified without our prior written consent;
c. parts or lubricants not originating from BELGICAST are used, material is used improperly,
incorrectly or negligently, or is not used according to the indications and destinations
provided.

2. General information
Elastomers. operating temperature range
Operating temperature range stated below must be used with as much caution as possible,
always taking into account a number of general guides summarised as follows:
- When the operating temperature is close to the operating limit the operating pressure may not
be at the maximum limit or close to it.
- It must be realised that when the temperature increases, the elastomer permanent deformation
increases so that the valve tightness threshold decreases, and leaks may be produced at
pressures below valve pressure rating.
- If the temperature is high, and the number of operating cycles is also high, the service life of the
elastomer decreases due to the risk of tear.

2.1 EPDM (Ethylene-Propylene)

Cold or hot fresh water, sea water and ventilation applications. Also, it can be used with low
pressure steam, if operating temperature is below the upper limit.

2.2 Nitrile
Fresh water, sea water, air, oils, alcohols, slightly abrasive products and hydrocarbons with
low aromatic content applications. Never use with petrol due to added additives. It can also
be used with some acids, salts and sulphides at concentrations and temperatures, which
vary for each case.

2.3 Butyl
It is used with alcohols, food products, and weak acids. Aldehydes, ketones, Amines and
Nitrogen by-products. It is also used with mineral and vegetable oils.

2.4 Hypalon
It is used for concentrated or weak acids, alcohols, ozone and Hyplochlorite. It has a very
good service life with a great variety of solvents, oils and greases. Do not use with steam.

2.5 Viton
Viton's chemical resistance is higher than for the rest of the elastomers, especially at mean
high temperatures. It behaves well with petrol, mineral acids, aromatic hydrocarbons and hot
gases. Never use it with steam, esters and ketones.

2.6 Neoprene
Neoprene is used with ammonia and ammonia by-products, some oils and photographic
emulsions. It behaves very well with water. Never use it in the presence of aromatic products
or hydraulic fluids.

2.7 Silicone
Silicone is used with air, hot gases and dry gases.

2.8 Natural rubber

It is used for powder-loaded fluids, cryogenic circuits, alcohols, caustic soda and liquid
ammonia.

3. Installation, maintenance, assembling-disassembling

3.1 Valve installation positioning in pipe
Keystone model C valves are installed between pipe flanges with bolts or through studs,
placing applicable gaskets between valve and flange faces (Wafer assembly).
The valve body outside diameter is guided and centered by bolts or through studs used for
valve mounting on pipe flanges.

Flange size
The flange diameter must be greater than the minimum value stated in Keystone model C
valve size data sheets.
If the inside diameter of the flanges should be smaller than the stated diameter, disks will be
prevented from opening (see Fig. 1).

Fig. 1 3.2 General precautions

Keystone model C valves can be mounted on horizontal or vertical pipes with upward or
downward fluid flow, and a number of specific precautions must be taken for each case.

Horizontal flow or tilted pipes

In these cases, valves must be mounted with the disk rotation axis in a vertical position, such
that the disks seat on the support rings and have a balanced swing taking the same stress
(see Fig.2).

(vertical)
Fig. 2

Pipes with upward vertical flow

There is no definite position for the disk axis in this case, any direction being acceptable,
selecting the most adequate direction depending on the pipe layout.
For this valve arrangement, the seat takes the disk weight, and an additional pressure drop
takes place. In these cases and for diameters above 6", mounting low torque springs for
counteracting the disk weight effect is recommended.

Pipes with downward vertical flow

Regarding the disk axis, the above stated applies.
For this valve arrangement, the disk weight is in the opening direction, and this must be known
in advance to be able to mount high torque springs for valve diameters greater than 6".

Mounting precautions as a function of the valve arrangement

For proper valve operation, fluid flow inside the valve at open valve position must be as
uniform as possible to prevent valve disks from opening and closing at an angle close to fully
opened valve, so producing an early wear of thrust washers and lateral faces of disk hinges.
Thus, taking into account the following points is important:
1. For valves with elastic seat, never weld next to the valve.
2. Never install the valve when flow is intermittent (pulsations).
3. If the valve is to be installed at a conical diffuser outlet, it must be adequately designed to
avoid turbulence at the valve inlet. If it should be possible, off center diffusers with guiding
vanes should be placed at diffuser outlet.
4. If the valve is to be installed at an elbow outlet, the same precautions as per the
paragraph above shall be taken.
5. When mounted on pump discharge side, valves must be installed as far as possible from
diffusers and elbows, in a stable flow area, at a minimum distance of five times the valve
nominal diameter.
