LARGE CLASS SIZE IN THE CLASSROOM

AFFECTS STUDENTS’ LEARNING
DEVELOPMENT

PREPARED BY:
LANGALI INTEGRATED SCHOOL
I. Context and Rationale

A classroom is a learning space, a room in which both children

and adults learn. It provides a space where learning can take place

uninterrupted by outside distractions. Classroom serves as second

home for the students. They spend almost 8 hours inside the

classroom. It is very important that classroom is conducive for

learning.

Classroom environments are extremely important for students

and for teachers. This is the place where it molds one’s life and future.

Everything from the color of the walls to the arrangement of the desks

sends impressions to students and can affect the way a student learns.

The emotional environment also will affect the learning environment

and how well a student receives instruction.

Creating a positive learning environment is essential for success

in the classroom. Knowing your students, giving them time and

understanding can boast their positive insight.

Asking neither a teacher nor a parent about what are their

optimum classroom sizes would have different answer. Reducing a

class size from kindergarten to high school can raise students’

achievement. This is according to article in “Great school”. With

smaller class sizes, teachers are able to get to know their students

better and can build a stronger relationship according to the study

done by Princeton University professors. Their study also says that

students from the smaller class scored higher on exams even when

they were no longer in a smaller-class-size model school.

One of the problems of teachers is to work with students in

classes larger than 25 or 30 students. Large classrooms make

discussions and group work more difficult. A study conducted by

some professors at the University of London found that in larger

classrooms, students were less engage.

Classroom with large number of size can really affects students

learning, especially in doing their activities and drills. Teacher cannot

give one of them equal attention and time.
