picture below.) But treating everyone exactly the same is actually not fair because it erases our differences
and promote privilege. This is the concept of equality.
On the other hand, equity means – giving someone his due. As WHO puts it, equity is "the absence of
avoidable or remediable differences among groups of people, whether those groups are defined socially,
economically, demographically or geographically." (bit.ly/1ycskSN)
Since everyone is different and unique, we must also redefine our ideas of fairness based on those unique
differences.
Aside from man’s individual uniqueness, he has wicked/brute tendency also (Machiavellian evil world)
since he is a dual - a yin-yang, of light and darkness, of good and evil. So, considering this duality in man
especially his brute tendency, he who deals with the task of ordering a group of men has to work with this
raw materials – uniqueness and brute tendencies. So a ruler is in a constant struggle for power because
every man, whose brute tendency we can’t deny, can act based on his desires and often considering his
interests (good or selfish) which interests clash with the interests of other men who equally have the
tendencies of following his good or selfish interests.
For Hobbes, the political leader is like the “Leviathan,” a large mythological sea creature who shall be the
“king over all the children of pride.” Similarly, Hobbes saw that a political leader is the king over prideful
people.
And a leader is also a member of a political group – a group with good or selfish interest as well, which
has achieved a dominant position over other political groups – groups which have good and selfish
interests also in the internal struggle for power.
BUT a ruler "should not deviate from what is good, if that is possible, but he should know how to do evil,
if that is necessary" (The Prince, p. 101) in order to tame or deceive the brutish tendency of man.
