Installation
Opening The VR8 Unit
1. Insert a flat bladed screwdriver between the base cover and top cover as shown in Figure 1.

2. Lift the screwdriver upwards until the top cover lifts up and forward.
3. Remove the top cover from the base unit. Remember that an attached lead is connected between the
keypad and the VR8 circuit board.

Removing The RF Receiver

1. Unplug the RF receiver data cable. Refer to Figure 3.

1. Remove the RF Receiver from the casing by pressing the two holding clips backwards, at the same time
lifting the RF receiver circuit board. Refer to Figure 3.

Installing The Telephone Lead

1. Refer to the section ‘Removing The RF Receiver’ on page 8 before installing the telephone lead.

2. Insert the telephone lead through the hole marked in Figure 4 and map the telephone lead as shown in
Figure 5.

3. Connect the telephone lead to the telephone socket (PHONE1) as shown in Figure 6.

Removing The DC Siren

1. Press the latch that holds the siren in place downwards as shown in Figure 7. At the same time, lift the
siren outwards from the side of the case.

Connecting The AC Plug Pack

1. Refer to the section ‘Removing The RF Receiver’ on page 8 before connecting the AC plug pack (TF008).
2. Push the AC mains lead through the hole as shown in Figure 8.

4. Using the blue terminal plug supplied, attach the plug pack lead to the VR8 circuit board as shown in
Figure 10.

Wall Mounting The VR8

1. Refer to the section ‘Removing The RF Receiver’ on page 8 and the section ‘Removing The VR8 PCB’ on
page 14 before mounting the base to the wall.
2. Mount the VR8 on a suitable location using the four screw holes located in the base of the VR8 casing as
shown in Figure 11.

Note When mounting the unit on a wall, the VR8 circuit board should be located at the top so
when you attach the lid, the lid slides upwards.
3. Re-install the RF receiver, VR8 and connecting cables.

1. Press the latch forward towards the black DC siren. At the same time, lift the VR8 printed circuit board
(PCB) upwards.

1. Turn the base of the unit upside down and place the rubber feet on the four locations provided.

Powering Up The System

1. Insert the 12 Volt 2 Amp battery (See Figure 14).

2. Connect power to the VR8 via the AC plug pack (TF008).
3. Enter the factory default code (2580) for User 1 followed by the # key to reset any alarm that may occur
upon system power up.
Note: User 1 is factory default as a Master Code (2580).
4. Connect the backup battery via the battery leads supplied to the VR8 circuit board.

Wiring and Power Up Operation

- Remove power from the control panel. The following describes the status of the module based on the LED
condition.
- Connect the RF Receiver to the control panel as shown
above using 0.8mm (22-gauge) or larger wire. Wire length LED On – Module is functioning normally.

Getting To Know Your VR8

Your VR-8 is made up of a control panel and numerous detection devices (magnetic / motion sensors, smoke
sensors etc). You can operate the VR8 using either the keypad or RF keyfobs. Your security company will
examine your premises and divide it up into sections called zones.
If a detection device detects intrusion, the status of the device changes from normal to faulted. If a detection
device becomes faulted when the VR8 is turned on (AWAY Mode or STAY Mode), the VR8 will sound an alarm
and send an alarm report via the telephone line to the security company. The security company will then take
the appropriate action.

During Installation the security company will configure various zones on your VR8 to behave differently.
Examples are given below along with a description of when these are used.
Burglary Zones
A burglary zone will sound an alarm as soon as it becomes faulted only when the VR8 is turned on (AWAY
Mode or STAY Mode). When the VR8 is turned off (disarmed), burglary zones will not sound an alarm if faulted.
24-Hour Zones
A 24-hour zone will sound an alarm as soon as it becomes faulted irrespective of the VR8 being turned on or off
(eg. Tamper Switches etc).
Fire Zones
A fire zone will sound an alarm as soon as it becomes faulted irrespective of the VR8 being turned on or off (eg.
Smoke sensors etc).
AWAY Indicator
The AWAY indicator will display when the VR8 is turned on in AWAY Mode.
STAY Indicator
The STAY indicator will display when the VR8 is turned on in STAY Mode.

Service Indicator
If the service indicator displays on the LCD screen, you should contact your security company to rectify the
trouble condition. The keypad will beep once every minute to warn you of the trouble condition. Pressing the #
key once will acknowledge the trouble condition and stop the keypad beeping.
Power Indicator
Both power indicator and service indicators will flash when the AC mains supply has failed. If the power
indicator is steady, the AC mains supply is normal. The keypad will beep once every minute to warn you should
the AC supply fail. Pressing the # key once will acknowledge the AC fail condition and stop the keypad
beeping. Once the power is restored the VR8 will return to normal.
Zone Indicators
A zone indicator (1 to 8) will display when the corresponding zone becomes faulted. If the zone indicator is
flashing the zone is in alarm, or the zone is in alarm memory. Alarm memory will clear the next time you arm
your system by turning the VR8 on and off again.
Alarm memory allows you to verify which zones became faulted (open) prior to resetting the alarm condition or
disarming the system.
Emergency Keys
The VR8 provides single key emergency functions (Panic, Fire and Medical). Pressing any of these keys for two
seconds will sound the siren and send a report to the security company. The security company will then act
accordingly for each emergency situation.
Your keyfob has the ability to activate a panic alarm by pressing both the lock key (Button 1) and the un-lock
key (Button 2) at the same time.
Keyfobs
Your VR8 can be operated using either the two button or four button keyfobs instead of the keypad on the main
desktop unit.

The security company can program the VR8's speaker or siren to sound each time you turn the VR8 on and off
via the keyfob's.

Programming The System

Only the security company/installer can program the VR8 Intruder Alarm System. All programming options of
the system are stored in a non-volatile EPROM. All programming configuration will remain intact during a total
power loss.
After you enter programming mode, programming the system will consist of entering the location number that
you want to program, and then change the data within the location you nominate.
You will repeat this procedure (i.e. nominate a location number and change the data) until all locations that need
to be changed have been programmed before you exit programming mode.

Programming Option Bit Locations

‘Option bit locations’, allow you to program a combination of up to four different features within the same
location. This saves you time when programming and reduces the number of locations that need to be
programmed.

4 = Answering Machine Bypass Only When Armed 9
8 = Use Bell 103 For FSK Format (Disabled = CCITT V21)
Location 177 is factory default programmed as nine (9). Both Option 1 and Option 8 have been added together
to give a value of nine (9).
If all options need to be programmed, you would program fifteen (15), adding all options together (1 + 2 + 4 + 8
= 15). If no options are required, program the location as zero (0).

Assigning RF Sensors
The VR8 Intruder Alarm System has the ability to assign up to 16 wireless RF sensors across 8 separate zones.
Before programming the wireless sensors, you need to assign each RF sensor to a zone. RF sensors 1 – 8 are
already assigned to their corresponding zone (eg. RF sensor 1 is assigned to Zone 1; RF Sensor 2 is assigned
to Zone 2 etc).
To assign RF sensor devices to zones (1 – 8), you will need to program LOCATION 528 – 543. Each location
represents an RF sensor device. Multiple RF sensors can be assigned to the same zone.

Adding RF Sensors
Programming the ID number of each RF sensor into the system requires you to follow the steps outlined below.
The RF sensor will be assigned to the zone as mapped in LOCATION 528 – 543.
1. Enter your Installer code followed by 0 and then press the # key [eg. 1234 + 0 + #].
2. Enter the RF sensor number (1 – 16) that you want to add followed by the # key.
[eg. 1# = Sensor 1, 16# = Sensor 16].
3. Enter the 9-digit ID number found on the RF sensor followed by the # key.
[eg. 000387941 + #].
Deleting RF Sensors
To delete an RF sensor, follow the steps outlined below.
1. Enter your Installer code followed by 0 and then press the # key [eg. 1234 + 0 + #].
2. Enter the RF sensor number (1 – 16) that you want to delete followed by the # key.
[eg. 1# = Sensor 1, 16# = Sensor 16].
3. Press the * key to delete the RF sensor from the system.
Adding RF Keyfobs
The VR8 has a total of 16 users. Users 1 – 8 are assigned as pin codes and users 9 – 16 are assigned as
remote radio RF codes. Follow the steps outlined below to add RF keyfobs.
1. Enter the Master Code followed by 1 and then press the # key [eg. 2580 + 1 + #].
2. Enter the user number (9 – 16) that you want to add followed by the # key.
[eg. 9# = RF Keyfob 1, 16 # = RF Keyfob 8].
3. Enter the 9-digit ID number found on the RF keyfob and then press the # key.
[eg. 008021629 + #]
Deleting RF Keyfobs
The VR8 has a total of 16 users. Users 1 – 8 are assigned as pin codes and users 9 – 16 are assigned as
remote radio RF codes. Follow the steps outlined below to delete RF keyfobs.
1. Enter the Master Code followed by 1 and then press the # key [eg. 2580 + 1 + #].
2. Enter the user number (9 – 16) that you want to delete followed by the # key.

3. Press the * key to delete the RF keyfob from the system.

One Shot Mode

When you program the output polarity as a one shot, the time base is multiplied by the time base multiplier (eg.
If the time base = 2 and the multiplier = 05, the output will operate for 5 seconds)
Pulsing Mode
When you program the output polarity as pulsing, the time base becomes the ‘ON’ time and the multiplier
becomes the ‘OFF’ time. The ‘OFF’ time is the time base x the multiplier (eg. If you want the output to pulse
one (1) second ‘ON’ and five (5) seconds ‘OFF’, you would program time base as one (1) and the multiplier as
five (5)).
