1.0 INTRODUCTION:
The PLA 12 is an alarm annunciation module for marine application using an advanced and highly reliable micro-
controller based programmable device. Its function is to alert the operator about the desired alarm condition by
means of visual and acoustics signal indication.
The PLA12 is built up of solid state modules and integrated circuits. In order to avoid electromagnetic
interference, low noise logic system is used. This system has a high signal to noise ratio, (both static and
dynamic) than a transistor-transistor-logic. This module can be located at the machinery space or control room
where it is easily observed and noticed by operator to monitor the normal condition and alert any abnormal
condition.
The PLA 12 Alarm unit has a total of 12 alarms. The front panel consists of 12 pairs of bright red LEDs against the
relevant text label describing the alarm indication and one green LED for power supply indication along with a
common audio alarm. In addition it is also provided with three operating switches (push keys) for the functions
of ‘Test, Mute and Reset’.

3.1. Initialization
When the power is applied to this unit it will initialize and read the configuration from its internal setting.
This setting can either be the default factory setting or configured at site as per the system requirement.
When an alarm is indicated on the PLA 12 unit, as mentioned above both persistent alarm and self
correcting alarms are locked. However on acknowledging the alarm by pressing the RESET key these two
conditions are responded to in the following manner.
a) Input alarm signal is present(Persistent alarm): When the specified fault or abnormal condition
has occurred and the reset key is pressed then the corresponding LEDs will go to steady state from
blinking / flashing state and the audio alarm will go OFF. The steady state of the LEDs indicates that
the alarm has been acknowledged but is still present and requires attention or is being attended to.

Once the fault is rectified or abnormal condition is normalized, the LEDs will automatically return to
normal mode.
b) Input alarm signal is not present (Self correcting alarm): When the specified fault or abnormal
condition is self correcting and the fault is not present at the time of pressing reset key then the
audio alarm and corresponding LEDs will go to OFF state from blinking / flashing state. The module
thus returns to Normal mode.
Alarm LED Display Indication
Flashing Red (1 Hz) Channel has alarm signal and waiting to be accepted by user

Each and every transient fault is also picked up and the in-built program checks the consistency of the signal
before it is registered. Hence with the minimum delay it can reliably detect all the specified fault condition
including the self correcting (transient) faults. It may be noted that transient faults differ from spikes due to
electromagnetic induction / noise. Both these cases cause a signal of alarm condition but we are interested only
in the actual alarm condition and hence the signals due to the latter are dropped by virtue of the in-built
program check.
The option of selecting the type of logic i.e. NO or NC and the delay time is adjustable within the given range and
can be set independently for each channel. Thus many options are provided to get the output as per various
requirements of user with out any change in hardware. This makes this system more flexible, compatible and
user-friendly.
Power available ON
Unit is functional Flashing
Unit is not functional Steady
Power not available/ fuse failure OFF
The power LED has got dual function as it indicates both availability of power as well as self monitoring of the
PLA12 unit. When PLA 12 unit is functioning the LED will be in flashing state (dim & bright, 2Hz). When PLA 12
unit develops any internal fault, like software, hardware failure, the LED will change from flashing state to
steady state to indicate that power is available but PLA 12 unit has failed. When Power LED is off it indicates that
power is not available.
In addition, the unit can also be monitored by the display on the main control panel. When a PLA12 is
functioning, connector no C24 of terminal L1 will give a continuous 2 Hz pulse train. When it fails due to power
supply / program / hardware then C24 of L1 will stop this pulse train. This signal is used to indicate the failure of

the PLA 12 module in main control panel. It can also be further supplemented by using an additional PLA 12 unit
on the main control panel to indentify the individual alarm as shown in fig 4-3-1.
Fig. 4-3-1
PLA12 unit can be used as repeater (remote module) to another PLA12 unit. Remote units are equally capable
(like main PLA12 unit) of sounding an audible alarm and visually indicating each alarm synchronous with main
unit. Once connections are made and main and remote unit are powered, both units will initialize start up and
up date the alarm immediately.
In Remote PLA 12 unit, only TEST function will be active to test the remote alarm unit. This will have no effect on
Main PLA 12 unit located in machinery room. Provision for multiple acknowledgement point (reset / mute) other
than the main unit is omitted. Acknowledgement can be done only at the machinery unit, not at the remote
locations. Any failure in the remote unit will not affect the functioning of the main unit. Connection diagram for
repeater module is shown in Fig 5-1.
There are two options for providing remote or repeater units.
1. A basic PLA 12 Unit itself can be used as repeater by connecting C14,C15,C16 & C17 of L1 between this
two unit as showed in Fig 5-1(1)

2. Where logging of the sequential order of alarms with date and time information of alarms (logs of the
events when failure has occurred, alarm acknowledged and fault rectified) are required PLA 12 output
can be fed to an auxiliary unit called PLA 12EL. This unit also can be used as a repeater. Connection
between PLA 12 & PLA 12 EL is simple. Connection from C14,C15,C16 & C17 of L1 of PLA 12 to C 4,
C5,C6 & C7 of L2 of PLA 12EL . This showed in Fig 5-1(2).
PLA 12 EL has battery backup for clock and EEPROM back for data up to 72 last alarms. More details of the
auxiliary unit, PLA12 EL is given in Annexure II.

In multiple PLA 12 environments grouping facility is available. In a PLA12 module there are 12 alarms, if any of
the alarm is present, Connector no. 13 of Terminal L1 will be high logic and this will activate the alarm in the
group alarm panel corresponding to module it belongs to. PLA12 module can be configured as group alarm
panel without any hardware / software change. Maximum 12 (twelve) PLA12 units can be grouped with the help
of an additional PLA12 unit. It is also possible to have a group alarm panel in machinery room and a repeater in
wheel house or desired location. Basically the function of the repeaters units of the group alarm panel are
similar to that of the repeater or remote units mentioned in Section 5.

PLA12 requires 24V DC, 0.5A input power. The availability of this power will be indicated on the PLA12 front
panel by the green LED. A power supply variation of + 15% can be absorbed by the unit. The PLA12 unit should
be powered from the vessels’ Normal/standby source with automatic changeover and failure alarm.
If above specified power supply is not available, an alternate power supply unit which has normal as well as
standby power supply with automatic change over facility and failure alarm has to be provided to power up the
device. A suitable power supply unit meeting these requirements is available in AIPS 10.
The details of AIPS 10 are described in Annexure I

In PLA 12, the first alarm can be visually distinguished from subsequent alarms by observing the blinking pattern
of the LEDs. The first alarm LED will blink such that it is lit for longer time than the subsequent alarm LEDs.
Flashing frequency:
1 Hz ( 1000 milli sec )
First alarm On time : 750 milli sec. Off time 250 milli sec
Subsequent alarms On time : 500 milli sec Off time 500 milli sec.
The PLA12 front panel alarm legend can be customized as per customer requirement. The alarms requiring
shutdown or slowdown are given visual importance. The format for the ordering form for customer requirement
is shown in Annexure IV

9.2. MUTE :
The function of the MUTE key is to silence the audio alarm. This doesn’t have any influence on the
alarm conditions. The LED corresponding to the alarm condition will continue to be flashing,
indicating that the fault is still present and is yet to be acknowledged.
9.3. TEST :
The TEST key is used to carry out the functional tests of the LEDs, audio alarm, switches,
semiconductor devices and programs. Pressing this Key will put the system into a self test mode,
which test all the input channels, thereby all LEDs start flashing with audio alarm. The unit can be
put into normal condition by pressing the RESET Key.

Alarm output from alarm annunciator modules is routed through external alarm indicator unit to various
remote locations as per requirements.
Any alarm in the machinery room simultaneously activates alarm all locations – machine control room (MCR)
and Propulsion Control Machinery Room , navigation bridge and Watchkeeping Engineers Cabin and Day room.
This unit is having a selector switch to facilitate alarm in duty engineers’ cabin in addition to the above
mentioned locations.
These unit will activate an alarm in Engineers accommodation room if an alarm function is not acknowledged
within the limited time. Factory set time for this is 120 sec. This delay can be varied from 60 sec to 300 sec
internally.
During the activation of the alarm, Red LED will indicate location at which the Alarm has occurred.
