Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Dissecting Multiplication

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 3rd
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE3.OA.1 Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7
as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which
a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.

8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1. Empowered Learner

7. Global Collaborator

Selected Technology Tool: Kahoot

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): N/A

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☐ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session: Both
☐ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s): Remembering, Understanding, and Applying

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This activity for the students reflects on UDL because the students
are using a mathematics strategy where they get to solve problems in a different way. The students get
to take action of strategy to solve the problems and express the answer. The students get to show what
they have learned using the strategy while also using a technology tool that can additionally support
their learning.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to playing the Kahoot game created for the students they will be learning how to dissect
multiplication problems and interpret it differently, for example 3 x 4 is 3 groups of 4. The students
can also learn how to break the problem down into simpler multiplication problems that can then be
added together.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: During the activity the students will be
playing a Kahoot game that has been made up of multiplication problems ranging from easy to hard.
The students will solve the multiplication problems and then submit their answer on the hand-help
student response system.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☐ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
Kahoot game provided on Weebly page.
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
 ☐ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
 ☐ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
After all students have answered the questions or the time runs it the students will immediately see if
they were correct or not. The correct answer will also be on the board.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the activity the students will continue working on these problems with additional lesson plans
and assignments.
How will the data be used? As a result of this activity the teacher will be able to see how the students
are doing with this material. It will be used for the teacher to construct further lessons and activities
based on how the students are doing. The students will be able to see how they did based on the
results of the activity. The results will not be fully and detailed discussed with the students because I
do not think it is necessary. Instead, the teacher will assess and plan further action. Differentiated
instruction can be planned from this information by creating new activities for the students using
different student response tools, such as Quizlet.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. The goal of this activity is for the students to be
motivated by the game and be more driven to apply and learn the new strategies given to them.

Reflective Practice: Student learning can be impacted from this lesson by having them do something
different, such as a competitive game. This also gives them the opportunity to use technology. This
lesson can be extended and taken further by creating a different game with harder problems or having
the students create their own game.
