Activity 6
The Rhythm of My Heart
- At this time, students will be able to measure and describe their own pulse (heart
rate) after several different activities, and explain how to use different time
intervals in measuring heart rate.

Objectives:
1. Measure and describe your pulse (heart rate) after several different activities
2. Explain how to use different time intervals to measure your heart rate

Materials:
1. Stopwatch / timer
2. Data Logbook
Procedure:
1. Sit quietly for a few minutes before beginning the activity.
2. When you are ready, place your first two fingers either on your neck or on the
3. inside of your wrist and locate your pulse.
4. Once you find your pulse, start the watch, and for 60 seconds, count the number
of beats you feel. That is your pulse.
5. Try the experiment again, but this time count for only 30 seconds. When you are
done, multiply your count by two. Compare your pulses.
6. Repeat by counting for 15 seconds and multiplying your count by four, then
counting for 10 seconds and multiplying by six, and so on.
7. Choose the length of test you wish to perform
8. Choose your resting pulse and the pulse of your exercise
9. After the activity, record your observations and answer the guide questions

Q1. What was your calculated resting pulse?

Q2. What was your pulse after exercising?
Q3. How would you differentiate your heart rates before and after exercising?
Q4. What is the advantage of timing for a full minute to find your pulse? masslive.com

Various diseases affecting the respiratory and circulatory systems might
begin to develop.
3. Activities
Cigarette Smoking is Dangerous to Your Health
After performing this activity, students will be able to explain the negative
effects of cigarette smoking on the circulatory and respiratory systems.
The activity involves the use of meta plan technique. This strategy is
simply a card technique for collecting ideas when a group of people are
working together. Empty paper strips or blank cards may be used as
materials for the activity.
