Introduction

Tencent Holdings Limited was originally a software firm, cofounded by Ma Hua


Teng also known as Pony Ma and his friend Zhang Zhi Dong in November, 1998. Tencent
principally involved in the provision of value-added services (VAS). The company operates
through three main segments. The VAS segment is mainly involved in provision of
online/mobile games, community value-added services and applications across various Internet
and mobile platforms. The company also engage in online advertising services, payment related
service and cloud service.

Presently, Tencent is providing value-added Internet, mobile and telecom services and online
advertising under the strategic goal of providing users with “one-stop online lifestyle services”.
Guided by its business philosophy “Users’ need is our priority”, Tencent achieves its mission
via the delivery of integrated internet solutions to over 1 billion netizens. Tencent mention in
their website that they are proud to deploy their world-class technological capabilities and
services to help promote the long-term growth and development of society.

Presently, Tencent has reiterated regarding “Connecter” and “Content”, the latest
strategy by one of the tech giants in china. The tech giant recently opened up its advertising
tools to marketers in the US for building a bridge between the world’s largest and second-
largest advertising markets, and giving brands new abilities to reach Chinese audiences across
its marquee messaging apps, WeChat and QQ. Tencent has taken their advantage on the
breadth of content and intellectual property (IP) featured across its apps. It's the largest online
gaming company in the world by revenue. Tencent News leads the industry in China in terms
of daily users. Tencent Video ranks first in China in terms of mobile video views. The company
also held 77% of the Chinese music streaming market at the start of 2017 through its three
streaming services QQ Music, Kuwo, and Kugou.

Looking forward, Tencent stays committed to improving its capacity for growth and
innovation while strengthening its nationwide branding for its long-term growth. More than
50% of Tencent employees are R&D staff. Tencent has acquired technology patents in multiple
fields: immediate messaging, e-commerce, internet payment services, search engine, data
security, gaming, and much more. Tencent spent more than RMB100 million in 2007 in setting
up the Tencent Research Institute, China's first internet research institute with campuses in
Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. The institute focuses on the self-development of core Internet
technologies, in pursuing its development and innovation for the industry.

Tencent main competitor is the Alibaba lead by Jack Ma. Alibaba of the ancient city of
Hangzhou near Shanghai and Tencent of shiny-new Shenzhen across the border from Hong
Kong. Finally, both touch an astounding percentage of the world’s most populous country:
Alibaba’s various online marketplaces count 552 million active customers; Tencent’s WeChat
messaging service recently surpassed 1 billion accounts. For years Alibaba and Tencent were
rivals only in the sense that both were successful and prominent examples of the Chinese
Internet phenomenon.
