1. 3
Solve the following equations:

2. 3
Solve the following equations:

3. The sum of the squares of three consecutive natural numbers is 149. Find them. 3

4. Three consecutive natural numbers are such that the square of the middle number exceeds the 3
difference of the squares of the other two by 60. Find the three numbers.

5. A two-digit number is such that the product of its digits is 12. When 36 is added to the number, 3
the digits interchange their place. Find the number.

6. The length of a rectangle exceeds its breadth by 5 m. If the breadth were doubled and the length 3
were reduced by 9 m, the area of the rectangle would have increased by 140 m2. Find its
dimensions.

7. The sum of the numerator and denominator of a certain positive fraction is 8. If 2 is added to 3
both the numerator and denominator, the fraction is increased by 4/35. Find the fraction.

8. A bus covers a distance of 240 km at a uniform speed. Due to heavy rain its speed gets reduced 3
by 10 km/h and as such it takes two hours longer to cover the total distance. Assuming the uniform
speed to be ‘x’ km/h, form an equation and solve it to evaluate ‘x’.

9. Determine whether the given quadratic equation has real roots. If so, find them: 4

10. Without solving the following quadratic equation, find the value of ‘m’ for which the given 4
equation has real and equal roots: x2 + 2(m – 1) x + (m + 5) = 0

11. If sum and product of the roots of the equation ax2 – 5x + c = 0 are both equal to 10, find the 4
value of a and c.

12. Divide 16 into two parts such that twice the square of the larger part exceeds the square of 4
smaller part by 164.

13. 480 is divided equally among ‘x’ children. If the number of children were 20 more, then each 4
would have got 12 less. Find ‘x’.

14. A trader buys x articles for a total cost of 600. 4

(i) Write down the cost of one article in terms of x.
(ii) If the cost per article were 5 more, the number of articles that can be bought for 600 would
be four less. Write down the equation in x for the above situation and solve it to find x.

15. Car A travels x km for every litre of petrol, while car B travels (x + 5) km for every litre of petrol. 4
(i) Write down the number of litres of petrol used by car A and car B in covering a distance of 400
km.
(ii) If car A uses 4 litres of petrol more than car B in covering the 400 km, write down an equation in
x and solve it to determine the number of litres of petrol used by car B for the journey.

16. One year ago, father was 8 times as old as his son. Now, his age is the square of his son’s age. 4
Find their present ages.
17. 4
Two pipes running together can fill a cistern in minutes. If one pipe takes one minute more
than the other to fill the cistern, find the time in which each pipe will fill the cistern.

18. In the morning assembly of a school, 480 students are arranged in rows and columns. If there 4
are 4 more students in each row than the number of columns, find the number of students in each
row.

19. If α, β are the roots of the equation 2x2 + 5x + k = 0, find the value of k, if α2 + β2 + αβ = 21/4. 4

20. Without solving the following quadratic equation, find the value of ‘p’ for which the given equation 4
has real and equal roots: x2 + (p – 3)x + p = 0.
