Vazhakoombu and Nendran Banana:

Kerala’s most famous banana variety Nendran Banana got its GI tag in 2015 also known as Chengazhikodan
Nendran Banana. Blossoms of Nendran Bananas are known as Vazhakoombu which posses immense benefits,
crucial for health.

APPEARANCE:
Pale yellow and turns golden yellow and red patches on ripening.

Every part of it can be useful with high nutritional values in some or the other way. One of the crucial part is its
flower Vazhakoombu also known as banana heart are filled with immense nutrients like fiber, protein, potassium,
calcium, copper, phosphorus, iron, magnesium and Vitamin E.

An added advantage is given by a research conducted by CSIR-NIIST calling it a component helpful in fighting
particularly for Colon cancer with another important role in reducing hypertension and controlling diabetes.

KEY FINDINGS:
Chengazhikodan Nendran Inflorescence (Vazhakoombu) can be potentially anti-biotic and anti-cancer.
It contains a high amount of bioactive anti-oxidant and phytochemical as well as pre-biotic dietary fiber.

anti-cancer potential.
Consumption of Vazhakoombu gives usual benefits against obesity, kidney, stones, and diabetes mellitus.
For the first time, CSIR NIIST reported its health benefits with scientific validation.
It plays a significant role in metabolic disorder by preventing and managing it.

As per research extract of the inflorescence reduces Carbohydrate digestion and interfere in the formation
of advanced glycation end products (AGE) which increases glucose uptake in the muscle cells.

It(extract of inflorescence) impedes oxidation of low-density lipoprotein helps lower hypertension which
highlights its crucial role against cardiovascular risk factor.
Combating Cancer:
This was done using cell culture which gave the crux of the role played by extract in combating Colon
Cancer.
Its good biologically active compound can be helpful in promoting apoptosis.
