INDICATORS OF PREPAREDNESS FOR VEDANTA STUDY

Swami Sadatmananda, Chief Acharya, Arsha Vidya Gurukulam, Anaikatti

while answering a question of a Student during satsangh on March 2, 2017
explained the indicators of preparedness of a Student for Vedanta Study.

The four fold qualification prescribed for a student of Vedanta is not

possible to be achieved 100% and also not necessary. But minimum level
of preparedness is required, when one starts the Vedanta study.

The minimum preparedness can be gauged through the following

indicators. This is just to give an approximate idea. It is not rigid or all all-
inclusive list. But useful for a Sadhaka for introspection without judgment.

1. There is clarity of the goal of life. This results in dispassion which

is there for most of the time. One is able to see the disconnect
between one’s activities and one’s goal of life.
2. One is able to remain attentive during most of the time while
attending a class or listening to recordings.
3. One has self-esteem and relative self-acceptance. One feels
confident that one is capable of pursuing moksha.
4. One’s mind does not go to adharm a deliberately. One does not
plan, scheme or maneuver for doing a non-righteous action.
Sometimes one may inadvertently do a wrong action.
5. One is able to relatively accept the world. One does not have a
cynical and complaining approach.
6. One is not having a hangover of situations and is able to
overcome before going to bed or atleast within a period of 24 hours.

7. One is able to feel blessed for most of the time.
8. One does not take much time to prepare the mind for meditation
or for study of scriptures.
9. One does not look forward to when the class will end. One is not
tired of spirituality requiring a break very frequently.
10. One does not have any obsessive relationship with any
person. There is no emotional attachment to anyone. With Guru,
love, respect and sraddha are there but not emotionally obsessive
relationship.
11. One has sraddha in the Sastra and the sam pradaya of
teaching.

As mentioned earlier, the above mentioned points are not exhaustive and
are only indicatory.

Sastra study becomes fruitful on reaching the critical level of adikaritvam.

When adikaritvam increase there is growing clarity.
