UK Broad
dcasting syystems
Broadcassting is a wayy of transferrring data su uch as soundd and visual iimages to reeceptors via
differentt methods off wireless an nd cable to aa broad audieence. The oppposite of Broadcasting is
Narrowcasting which h is based on n the same p principle of b
broadcastingg but is only available to
o a
small rannge of audien nces. Broadccasting was first discoveered and praacticed in thee 1920’s, Thee
first everr television b
broadcast waas transmitted by John LLogie Baird in 1925 and BBC was thee first
televisionn company tto broadcastt one channeel that could d be watchedd by people in their hom mes.
As people gained mo ore knowledge about bro oadcasting CConvergencee started hap ppening, wh hich
involves two things ccoming together for example audio and images and in recen nt times Inteernet
and televvision. Some e of the diffeerent methods of broadccasting include:
Terrestrial Broadcasting:
Terrestrial broadcastting is thr first ever methhod of broaddcasting, It ccan use eitheer analouge or
digital waaves to broaadcast and itt is known ass DVB‐T (Diggital video brroadcasting terrestrial).
Terrestrial means something thaat is based on earth whicch explains tthat terrestrial broadcassting
can only broadcast b by ariels on the earth forr example crrystal palace ariel which broadcasts to
crystal paalaca and su
urrounding areas, and Raadio has to b be a certain range for traansmission tto
occur (baandwidth). Inn addition thhe radio wavves can onlyy travel in strraight lines w
which bringss
problemss because th he waves aree not able too travel over and around d objects so iif the recepttor
was not aaccessable to the radio w waves the trransmission wouldn’t bee possible. O Other problems
can include the weatther, becausse If the weaather is extreemely harsh it can interffere with thee
ariel and the radio wwaves so the signal receivved wouldn’’t be very cleear.

Cable Broadcasting:
Cable broadcasting is broadcasting that is received via a cable being plugged into your
television and receiving frequency signals through fixed optical fibers or coaxial cables. The
cables are based under the ground of your street but not every area has a cable because no
media providers have put their cable there, This is a disadvantage to cable because you can
only go with the media provider who owns a cable in your area for example ‘Sky’ and ‘Virgin
media’. In addition if something happens to the cable and it breaks or there is a fault
somewhere along the line you will not be able to receive any signals. On the other hand an
advantage to cable broadcasting is that it provides a clearer picture and better audio because it
isn’t affected by weather and it’s very secure also people prefer cable because only subscribers
have access to the channels they choose to watch.

Digital Broadcasting:
Digital broadcasting (DVT) uses computers that encode tv into digital information which uses
pluses, 1’s and 0s to broadcast on a certain radio frequency which uses less bandwidth so there
is more room for extra channels, interactive tv, multiplex channels and HD. It can provide HD
(High definition) quality picture and audio and multi channels to choose from. It also allows us
to broadcast on several channels together and watch one channel whilst recording another has
only become recently popular in the 21st century.

Internet broadcasting:
Internet broadcasting is television programs that are streamed buffered or downloaded via
broadband which is a high frequency signal on your house telephone line, you are able to watch
programs through the websites of different TV channels for example ‘BBC I player’ and has only
become popular during the 21st century. The benefits for the audience to internet broadcasting
is that you can choose what you want to watch and when and It’s free to view over the
internet, this is making television a lot more convenient. On the other hand the channels are
losing viewers on televisions which means they are losing money but the broadcaster benefits
through advertising on the programs being viewed online in which they gain some money back
because the adverts cannot be skipped. The only drawback of internet broadcasting is that you
can’t watch the program live because it is only published afterwards plus you will need to have
a good internet connection.
