Calculus May 2019

1(b)
• Some candidates either do not write a constant of integration, or write
one, but don’t use it. The 3rd A1 in the markscheme requires the constants
to be written and used correctly. As per the note, the following marks can
still be awarded. This is effectively a 1-mark penalty for not using the
constant of integration correctly. Apply a similar approach in method 2.
1 ln ( 0.021x )
• An equivalent correct method is to find ∫
0.021x
dx =
0.021
( +c )

2(c)
1
• Award M1 for any attempt to differentiate arctan2x or integrate
1+ 4x 2
• A common error is forgetting “+c”, which is R0.
• Watch out for FT from an incorrect answer in part (b).

3(a)
n
1⎛ 8⎞
• Some candidates compare to ⎜ ⎟ , which is an equivalent correct
3⎝ 9⎠
approach.
• The R1 is awarded for correct reasoning using a geometric series with
8
r = .
9

4
• Watch out for errors in the derivatives (which are common). The working
must be checked carefully.
• The final M1 for substituting x = 0 might occur earlier, if an error is made.
This is acceptable. Award M1 for an attempt to substitute x = 0 into their
expression.

5(a)
• In the final step(s) some candidates make errors with the constant of
c ec
integration, for example e− ln x+c = instead of e− ln x+c = . Since this is the
x x
last question on the paper, award A0 for the final mark if an error is made.
• However, once a correct equivalent equation without logarithms is seen,
award A1 and ignore any subsequent errors. This is because candidates
often replace their correct constant with a “c” to match the given
equation.
