1.0 Introduction
This is a Building Science and Services II assignment, during this assignment period,
we have to conduct a building services case study to one hypermarket building or shopping
complex in town hence we choose a hypermarket which is called Aeon Big at Setapak. During
this assignment, we need to sketch a floor layout plan then indicate and illustrate the ventilation
and air-conditioning system, firefighting system and security system. Therefore, we need to
know the position of these system and find out the name of each element. We also have to show
the function of these system and comment whether the design or the performance is satisfactory
or not. Additionally, we should estimate the monthly electricity cost for the lighting of the
building hence our first task is need to go the site and calculate how many lamps at the
surveying area, identify the type of lamps with theirs watt and get the operation hour from the
notice board. These are important information that we need to use to calculate the monthly
electricity cost for the lighting with proper formula. After get the results, we also have to
comment and explain whether the electricity cost of lighting in this building can be further
optimized or not. Last but not least, we need to prepare an essay which is written about the
general and major contributors of electricity consumption in Aeon Big. We also need to find
out the potential environmental issues that related to the electric energy consumption of Aeon
Big such as air-conditioning, cold storage, cooler and freezer. Then, suggest and elaborate the
concept of the products or systems that can be used to conserve the electricity.

2.0 Type of System
2.1 Ventilation & Air conditioning system
Ventilation & Air conditioning system is the process of changing or replacing air and
any space to provide high indoor air quality. Example, to control temperature, replenish oxygen,
or remove moisture, smoke, heat, dust, airborne bacteria, and carbon dioxide. Ventilation
include both the exchange of air to the outside as well as circulation of air within the building.
It is one of the most important factors for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality in buildings.
Methods for ventilating a building may be divided into mechanical and natural types.

Due to Aeon hypermarket is adopting mechanical ventilation system. Which is

mechanical inlet & outlet. A mechanical ventilation system can be combined with all sorts of
heating and cooling systems. Often the heating, cooling and ventilation of a building are
combined in the air-conditioning system. In a mechanical ventilation system, the supply air and
the exhaust air are transported mechanically. Mechanical inlet and extract are able to control
of ventilation capacity; no dependence of the outdoor weather conditions and despite possible
noisy environment. It also be able humidify and dehumidify of the air supply. This provide the
best possible system of ventilation, but also expensive.

Besides, the basic component of a mechanical ventilation are filters, ductwork, fire
dampers, and diffusers. Filters is possibility of cleaning the air by an air filter or supplying the
air from a relative clean site of the building. It installed at point of entry into the ventilation,
purpose is to remove suspended particles, contaminants & odours. Other than that, Ductwork,
ducts, or ducting, are conduits, or tubes, that typically form part of a ventilation system, used
to convey air throughout a building. An example of a simple elementary duct is a fireplace
chimney, used to convey smoke to the outside. Hard pipes used to transfer water or gas are not
classed as ductwork.
In addition, the fire dampers prevent the spread of fire through heating, ventilation, and
AC ducts, which helps to stop a fire from spreading throughout the rest of the hypermarket
buildings. They also help to prevent smoke from traveling through the building’s ductwork in
the event of a fire. It’s also installed and prevent the fire burn through the wall opening by
ductwork so as to control the rate of combustion. Lastly, diffusers in aeon are in rectangular
shaped. The main role a diffuser plays is spreading the air around a hypermarket to increase
the impact area of the air. A diffuser also allows air to be comfortably spread, as opposed to
pouring directly out of a duct onto the space below it. The diffuser is beneficial for noise
reduction, assuming the system is designed properly.
Comment

The temperature in Aeon are about 22 to 24 degree Celsius so is just nice. Customer will not
feel very cold during their shopping session. The building is equipped with all mechanical
ventilation system. This type of system possible to ventilate spaces deep within long buildings
that cannot be easily ventilated by natural means. The location of each ventilation and
conditioning system is work effectively, so will not feel different temperature at different place.

2.2 Fire-Fighting System
The fire-fighting system adapt in Aeon hypermarket are active fire protection system.
Active Fire Protection (AFP) is a group of systems that require some amount of action or
motion in order to work efficiently in the event of a fire. Actions may be manually operated,
like a fire extinguisher or automatic, like a sprinkler, but either way they require some amount
of action. AFP includes fire/smoke alarm systems, sprinkler systems, and fire extinguishers as
well as firefighters. Fire/smoke alarm systems are used to detect whether there is fire and smoke
in a building. Sprinkler systems are used to help slow the growth of the fire. Fire extinguishers
and firefighters are used to help put out the fire all together.

There are few components of fire-fighting system in “Aeon” hypermarket. Which is

active fire detection and alarm system. Fire detectors are designed to detect one or more of the
three characteristics of fire smoke, heat and flame. Besides that, every fire detection system
must include manual call point (break glass), so that in the relevant of fire, help can be called
immediately. During a fire, activation of an alarm sounders or bells is to arouse the attention
of the occupants so that evacuation can be carried out without causing harm to occupants.
Besides, fire extinguishers also part of the fire-fighting equipment in the hypermarket.
Fire extinguishers are provided for a 'first attack' fire-fighting measure, generally undertaken
by the occupants of the building before the fire service arrives. It is important that occupants
are familiar with which extinguisher type to use on which fire. Most fires start as a small fire
and may be extinguished if the correct type and amount of extinguishing agent is applied whilst
the fire is small and controllable.

Fire hose reels are located at strategic places in Aeon building to provide a reasonably
accessible and controlled supply of water for fire extinguishing. Fire hose reel systems consist
of pumps, pipes, water supply and hose reels located strategically in a building, ensuring proper
coverage of water to combat a fire. The system is manually operated and activated by opening
a valve enabling the water to flow into the hose that is typically 30 meters away. The system
pressure loss will activate the pump ensuring adequate water flow and pressure to provide a
water jet of typically a minimum of 10 meter from the nozzle.

A fire sprinkler is a spout connected to a system of funnels, and introduced just

underneath the roof of a room. Each sprinkler has a little glass knob with a fluid in it. This
globule typically obstructs the stream of water. In a flame, fluid in the knob will end up hot. It
will at that point grow, and break the glass globule, evacuating the deterrent and making water
splash from the sprinkler. The fundamental distinction between a hydrant and a sprinkler is that
a sprinkler will come naturally in a flame. A flame hydrant must be worked physically via
prepared firemen. A sprinkler will for the most part be enacted in all respects rapidly in a flame
perhaps before the flame station has been educated of the flame and in this way is powerful at
putting out a flame in the beginning periods, before it develops into a substantial flame.

Comment

Fire-fighting system is a must in every hypermarket, and this system of equipment is used to
prevent extinguish localize. The fire-fighting system equipment are well located at every
strategic place in the hypermarket. Example, The fire sprinkler capable to cover the whole
hypermarket to reduce the risk of fire event. Besides, the condition of fire extinguishers and
hose reel are hang on the pillar and in good condition. The fire extinguisher are not expired and
can perform well by observe the pressure gauge.

2.3 Security System
A security system for your business provides greater peace of mind, lower insurance
rates, and a safer working environment for you and your employees. If the companies with
more extensive operations, a larger physical location, more employees or high-value assets, a
more sophisticated commercial security system may be needed. These systems usually require
professional installation and continuous monitoring and management.

The security system in the Aeon Big is Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), it is a system
allows the use of videos cameras to monitor the interior and exterior of a property, transmitting
the signal to a monitor or set of monitors. It also relies on strategic placement of cameras, and
observation of the camera's input on monitors somewhere. Because the cameras communicate
with monitors or video recorders across private coaxial cable runs or wireless communication
links, they gain the designation "closed-circuit" to indicate that access to their content is limited
by design only to those able to see it.

One of the function of CCTV is deter criminal activity, this is the biggest and most
recognised benefit for those who choose to add CCTV systems to their property. It goes without
saying that having a CCTV camera installed at your premises will act as a serious deterrent to
criminals and anyone carrying out illegal activities. The sight of a CCTV camera infers an air
of danger and the presence of the law, deterring anyone planning to carry out a crime from
doing so.

Another function of CCTV is peace of mind, it provides people with an increased sense
of security and reassurance, particularly in areas where the crime rate is high. As importantly,
you get a whole shot of what happened at the event: What did they steal? Did they use a knife?
You get all that. But more relevant today is collect evidence because in the unfortunate event
of a crime occurring at your premises, having a CCTV system really does pay dividends as it
provides a way of collecting evidence to help ‘suss out’ exactly what happened. Crimes can be
solved far more easily with additional evidence from a CCTV camera, helping place times,
locations and, most importantly, suspects.

Protect customer and staff also is one of the function of CCTV, with CCTV you can
help protect both employees and customers in a number way. The primary way is protecting
them physically. If they are attacked inside of your establishment you can turn over video of
the attack to the authorities to help them find the assailant. CCTV can also stop crime from
happening in the first place and can clear up any misunderstandings if money or merchandise
goes missing.
Comment

It is very important to consider the available security options and choose one that is the best fit
for the building safe especially in business building. We can observe that the CCTV are located
at every corner of the Aeon hypermarket and each counter have at least one CCTV on top of
the cashier to avoid from robbery case. Each of the CCTV are recording and supervise by the
security manager. There also have high display unit usually is a high resolution colour monitor
at the customer service.

3.3 Comment and Explanation
In conclusion, the cost of lighting for tubular fluorescent lamps are too high at Aeon
Big, Setapak. In order to save the cost of lighting, the double capped fluorescent tubes should
be replaced with LED tubes that produce same light. An LED tube of 18 Watts can produce
light of lumens similar to that produced by a 36 Watt fluorescent tube so it will be better to use
LED light. Then, we can use of motion sensors in areas like clock rooms helps ensure that light
is off whenever a person leaves the area at night. Furthermore, we can use Solar PV system for
lighting provisions. As well, parking roofing can be constructed using solar panels.

4.0 Essay of Electricity Consumption
The general electricity consumption of Aeon Big which locate at the PV area are
ventilation and air-conditioning system, security system as well as lighting system. The
component of ventilation air-conditioning system include ceiling cassette which are generally
utilize at the shopping mall in Malaysia and the component of security system are varifocal
infrared (IR) dome camera and EAS anti-theft devices. Not only have that, the lighting system
contained LEDs and linear fluorescent lighting.

The ceiling cassette units are compact and light in weight so the design of the ceiling is
flexible. Therefore, they are suitable ideal for shop, restaurant and office which is design with
false ceiling. The air from the ceiling cassette unit can be discharged in any direction, in
additional they can be installed in the middle of the room or in a corner as well which consider
as flexibility. Although the air flow distribution for ceiling height merely up to 3.5m but it
contribute an extremely quite environment in operation both indoor and outdoor in order to
configuration save space as well.

Varifocal infrared (IR) dome camera are one of the component for closed-circuit
television (CCTV) which define as TV system in which signals are not publicly distributed but
are monitored, primarily for surveillance and security purposes. They are commonly used for
a variety of purpose such as maintain perimeter security in medium to high-secure areas and
installations, observe behavior of incarcerated inmates and potentially dangerous patients in
medical facilities. The closed-circuit television generally act as a traffic monitoring in order to
record the circumstance of the road. Last but not least, they are available to obtain a visual
record of activities in situations where it is necessary to maintain proper security or access
controls for some place such as shopping mall, private area, bank and airport.

One should keep their premise safe and secured by installing the EAS anti-theft device
which stands for electronic article surveillance. It involves the attachment of tags that emit
some sort of signal to products and then installing a system to monitor it. The purpose is to
strengthen the inventory management and prevent loses due to staff misplacement, fraud or
theft. The EAS anti-theft device is usually set up at the exit of a premise, once a person is
detected carrying any soft tag bar code, the system alarms will beep by way of informing its
user.

Linear fluorescent lighting is a type of gas-discharge lamp which come in wide variety
of length, diameters, wattage and colour. They are the most popular lighting solution around
the world due to energy efficiency, cost saving as well as long life light. One of the obvious
advantage of linear fluorescent lighting come from its energy efficiency. A linear fluorescent
lighting generally contribute about a 25 to 35% savings in the amount of energy. They consume
contrast to a traditional light bulb. Over time, that amount of savings can make quite an impact
on your overall electric bill and saving just continue to rack up if the conventional light bulb
replace by linear fluorescent lighting. Having such a great light life attempt another added
saving in maintenance and labor does not have to replace them very frequently. Where are they
used? They are the primary light source in most commercial settings and are also used in many

14
ATGB 2363 Building Science and Services
household environments. They can be used indoors and outdoors. In short, linear fluorescent
lighting can be utilized nearly everywhere.

LEDs which called as light emitting diode are semiconductor device that
converts electricity into light and they are the latest technology in energy efficient lighting.
They are extremely energy efficiency due to merely using approximately 85% less energy than
second energy saving lighting which meaning that effective on saving money. Besides that,
LEDs light have the longest life time in the lighting technology. LEDs light have 50000 hours
or more if they design properly. Do you know that why LEDs light are the most recommended
lighting technology from government? As they not only environment friendly, they also not
contain any mercury or other hazardous substance.

In order to determine the major contributors of electricity consumption, there are

several kind of factors such as monthly electricity bills, basic building design data, weather
data and operation data of HVAC system. One of the major contributors of electricity
consumption is air-conditioning system as the energy use of an air-conditioner is highly depend
to the climate of the region and the climate at Malaysia often hot sunny day which is about 33-
39℃.Therefore, the increase climate of the region will also increase the electricity consumption.
Besides, no matter the shopping mall on operating hour or off peak hour the air-conditioner
should operate 24 hours without any break for the stuff which need to keep under the low
temperature like meat, vegetable, milk, yogurt and cheese to preserve the quality of the stuff in
order to prevent the bacteria damage them and let them spoil. According to the study from
Tenaga National Berhad in short form as TNB, the monthly electricity bill for the households
that have installed the air-conditioner are higher than non-installing household and the price
between both different household is not a tiny gap. As result, the air-conditioner are the one
that major contributor of electricity consumption in every single commercial and business
structure for example AEON BIG.

The second major contributor of electricity consumption are lighting system as the
percentage of quantity that occupy on electricity consumption are almost 70%. Hence, one of
air conditioner is equal to 17 quantity of the lighting. Among the variety of lighting system, the
linear fluorescent lighting are most effective on electricity consumption due to they require
higher watt to produce a low lumens. For the example, linear fluorescent lighting require 15
watts to produce 600 lumens, however the LED bulb may require only 9 watts to produce 900
lumens.

There are some potential environmental issues that related to the electric energy
consumption of Aeon Big at Setapak. In this building, there are a lot of cooler and freezer
which consumption large electrical energy and are used to store the milk, ice cream, yogurt and
other in order to keep fresh and avoid spoil. As we know the cooling appliances contain many
hazardous and toxic components in addition to plastics and metal. Many cooling appliances
manufactured last time contains chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or hydro chlorofluorocarbons
(HCFCs), ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) and potent greenhouse gases (GHGs). These
gases have gradually been prohibited in order to protect our earth and reduce pollution to

15
ATGB 2363 Building Science and Services
environment. Nowadays, new cold appliances contain hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) which have
no impact on the ozone layer but still potent greenhouse gases (GHGs).

Greenhouse gases or GHGs are compound gases that trap heat or longwave radiation in
the atmosphere. This gases which presence in the atmosphere and makes the Earth’s surface
warmer. Sunlight or shortwave radiation can easily passes through these gases and the
atmosphere. This radiation is absorbed by the surface of the earth and released as heat or
longwave radiation. The molecular structure of GHGs allows them to absorb the heat released
or trap them in the atmosphere and re-emit them back to the earth. Therefore, this heat trapping
phenomenon is known as the greenhouse effect. The accumulation of GHGs since the industrial
revolution has accelerated this greenhouse effect and causing global warming and climate
change.

Some cool appliances contain halocarbons in their refrigeration system and foam
insulation. Halocarbon is a generic term which covering a number of human-produced gases
all containing carbon and halogen atoms such as fluorine, chlorine or bromine. Halocarbons
include chlorofluocarbons (CFCs) and halons. When these gases are not trapped and destroyed,
they have a major impact on atmospheric warming which is 700 to 10,900 times that of carbon
dioxide (CO₂). In addition, some freezers built before 2000 contain 1 to 1.5 grams of mercury
which is highly toxic for the food chain and human beings. If the refrigerator is broken and
thrown in the garbage, it releases up to 3.7 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent which is the same
amount emitted by a car that travels 17,500 km.

Therefore, the halocarbons in refrigeration appliances contribute to the greenhouse

effect. These gases prevent heat escaping from the earth and deplete the ozone layer that filters
the sun’s rays. The greenhouse effect and ozone layer depletion contribute to global warming.
Consequently, the demand for air conditioning and power rises caused more refrigeration
appliances are manufactured. The effects of climate change including extreme weather such as
floods, droughts, forest fires and others, higher sea levels, reduced agricultural output,
reduction in phytoplankton which is used to feeds many types of fish, changes in wildlife
habitats and much more.

As we know that shopping mall is the one building which need large electricity energy.
Therefore, the concept of the products or systems is important to conserve the electricity in
shopping mall. There are some concept of the products or systems that can be used in Aeon
Big at Setapak. Firstly, the installation of occupancy sensors in the building. Occupancy sensor
technologies if used effectively, it can also significantly reduce energy consumption. Infrared
or ultrasonic occupancy sensors can be used to turn on and off lights and the HVAC system
when a room is occupied for a set period of time. These sensor's relative performance can be
expected to vary with space vacancy rates, timing of occupancy and it's relation to the switch
time delay. It is useful in order to conserve the electrical energy.

Not only that, daylighting can be consider in order to conserve the electrical energy
because it taking advantage of existing daylight which can save 24% to 51% of lighting
electricity use. It is depending on the window orientation and presence of window shading
devices. However, any glazing which is used on windows should be spectrally selective to

16
ATGB 2363 Building Science and Services
allowing in visible light but rejecting near infrared light. Moreover, windows of the building is
important in order to let the natural light come inside. Fenestrations are glazed apertures in
buildings. These include conventional windows, roof skylights, glassed doors, clerestories,
roof monitors, tubular skylights, and sloped glazing of different kinds. Fenestrations are
normally placed in buildings to provide a view of the outdoors and for the admission of daylight
illumination to the interior. Along with these generally desirable features come solar radiant
heat gain which is generally desirable in winter and undesirable in summer and conductive heat
transfer. The latter add to the cost of heating the building in winter and cooling it in summer.
The daylight illumination while generally desirable can also be a source of unwanted glare.

The solar heat gain accompanying it can induce occupant discomfort as well as
increased air conditioning costs. Designing, orienting, shading, and sizing windows to increase
their benefits while reducing problems such as glare, overheating, condensation, cold draft,
large heating or cooling loads, furniture fading is an important goal of the building designer. If
the original design is not good in these areas, occupants may experience problems. Retrofitting
improved windows, shades, or other attributes can cost a lot. However, replacing old
conventional windows with well-chosen energy-efficient ones can result in significant yearly
energy savings, better comfort, and improved occupant satisfaction. While desirable in
residential buildings, this can also increase productivity in commercial or office buildings. It
is often the productivity enhancements save more dollars than the entire energy bill itself

Besides that, the conserve of electrical energy can be done by building orientation. It
refers to the way of a building is situated on a site and the positioning of windows, rooflines,
and other features. A building oriented for solar design takes advantage of passive and active
solar strategies. Passive solar strategies use energy from the sun to heat and illuminate buildings.
Building orientation and building materials also facilitate temperature moderation and natural
daylighting. Active solar systems use solar collectors and additional electricity to power pumps
or fans to distribute the sun's energy. Heat is absorbed and transferred to another location for
immediate heating or for storage for use later.
