1. Engineering Curves

CW1: Class Work Problems


1. A circle of 40 mm diameter rolls on a straight line without slipping.
Draw a curve traced by a point on its circumference for one complete
revolution of the circle. Name the curve. Draw a tangent and normal to
the curve at a point on it 25 mm above the straight line.
2. Draw an involute of a square of 25 mm. Also draw a tangent and
normal to the curve at any point of your choice.
3. Draw an involute of a circle of 50 mm diameter. Also draw the normal
and tangent at any point on the curve.
4. One end of an elastic string, 125 mm long is attached to the
circumference of a circular disc keeping the string always tight. Draw
locus of free end and name the curve.
5. In above problem, If instead of string a stick of same length is rolled on
a circle ,trace both ends of stick
6. Draw a helix of pitch equal to 50 mm upon a cylinder of 75 mm
diameter. Also develop the surface of the cylinder. Calculate helix
angle also.

A1 : Assignments (On A-3 Size sketch Book)

1. An inelastic string 150 mm long has one end attached to the


circumference of a circular disc of 40 mm diameter. Draw the curve
traced by the other end of the string, when completely wound around
the disc, keeping the string always tight. Name the curve. Also draw
tangent and normal to the curve through any point.

2. A circle of 50 mm diameter rolls along a straight line without slipping


.Draw the curve traced by point P on the circumference which is 40 mm
away from point A. Point A is on the circumference but initially in
contact with horizontal straight line. Name the curve and draw tangent
and normal at any point on the curve.
3. A straight line AB 100 mm long roll without slipping, on a semicircle
with diameter 70 mm.In the initial position the line AB is tangent to the
semicircle at A. Draw the paths of the two ends of straight line AB.

2. Projection of straight lines


CW2 : Class Work Problems
Q1. A line PQ having length 80 mm is parallel to both HP and VP. Its
end point P is 20 mm above HP and 25 mm in front of VP. Draw its
projections
Q2. A line CD having length 70mm has it’s end C 10 mm above H.P.
and 25 mm in front of V.P. The line is parallel to V.P. and inclined to
H.P. at an angle of 40ᴼ. This line is entirely in first quadrant. Draw
projections of straight line CD.
Q3. What would have been projections of straight line CD in Q2. If end
D is in the fourth quadrant instead of first quadrant
Q4. A line RS having length 100mm has its endpoint R 10mm above
H.P. and 25mm in front of V.P. The line is parallel to H.P. and inclined
at 45ᴼ to V.P. and the end S is in first quadrant. Draw the projections of
the line RS.
Q5. A line AB having length 100mm has its end A 10mm above H.P.
and 20mm behind V.P. The end B is in the second quadrant. The line
parallel to H.P. and inclined at 40ᴼ to V.P. Draw the projections of line
AB
Q6. A line AB 100mm long makes an angle at 30ᴼ with H.P. and 45ᴼ
with V.P. its one end A is 20 mm above H.P. and 30mm in front of V.P.
Draw F.V. and T.V. on the line and find its inclination with XY line.
Q7. A line RS 70mm long, has its end R 10mm above H.P. and 20mm in
front of V.P. the ends is 45 mm above H.P. and 70 mm in front of V.P.
Draw the projections of the line RS and find its inclination with H.P. and
V.P.

Q8. End A of line AB is in second quadrant and is 40mm and 15mm


from H.P. and V.P. respectively. The line is inclined at 40ᴼ to both the
reference plane. Draw the projections when end B is in the third
quadrant and 45mm from H.P. Find its true length and distance of end B
from V.P.
Q9. Draw the projections of a line AB 90mm long. Its midpoint M being
50mm above H.P. and 40mm in front of V.P. The end A is 20 mm above
HP and 10 mm in front of VP Show the inclinations of the line with H.P.
and V.P.
Q10. Elevation of line AB is 75mm and is inclined at 45ᴼ to the XY line.
End A is 25mm above the H.P. and end B is 10mm behind V.P. Draw its
projections length of line AB is 95mm and end B is in third Quadrant.
Find the inclination of line AB with H.P.
Q11. The Plan of 100mm line PQ measures 80mm. The point P is 30mm
in front of V.P. and end Q is 50mm above H.P. the end p is in fourth
quadrant and the end Q is in second quadrant. The line is inclined at 30ᴼ
to the V.P. Draw its projections and also find its inclination with H.P.

Q1. The end projectors of a line AB are 55mm apart. Point A is 55mm
below the H.P. and 60mm behind the V.P. Point B is 30mm above the
H.P. and 25 mm in front of V.P. Draw the projections of AB and find its
true length and true inclination
Q2. The F.V. of the line AB is 80 mm long is inclined at 45ᴼ to the XY
and measures 60mm. The end A is 10mm above the H.P. and 20mm in
front of V.P. Draw the projections of the line AB and finds its
inclination with H.P. and V.P.

Q3. Elevation of a line AB is 75mm and is inclined to XY line at 45ᴼ.


End A is 25mm above H.P. and end B is 10mm behind V.P. draw its

Find inclination of line AB with H.P. and draw its projections

CW3 : Class Work Problems
Q1. A rectangular plane ABCD ,50 mm X 70 mm size has the surface
of a plane perpendicular to the V.P. and inclined to H.P.at an angle of 30
degrees. Draw the projections of a plane if shorter side of plane is in
H.P.
Q2. A square plane ABCD with side 40 mm has its surface inclined to
V.P. at an angle of 45 degree and perpendicular to H.P. such that one of
the side of square plane is in the V.P. Draw its projections.
Q3. An isosceles triangular plate of 50 mm base and 75 mm altitude
appears as an equilateral triangle of 50 mm in top view. Draw the
projection of plate if its 50 mm long edge is on H.P.What is its
inclination with H.P.?
Q4. A circular plate of 60 mm diameter is resting on point A on its rim
with its surface inclined at 30 degree with HP. Draw projections of the
plate.

Q1. A pentagonal lamina of sides 30 mm is resting on H.P. on one of its
corner so that surface makes an angle of 60 degree with H.P. Draw F.V
and T.V. of pentagon.
Q2 A set square of 300-600 , having its shortest edge 35 mm long in VP.
Its surface is perpendicular to H.P. and inclined to VP such that its F.V.
appears as an isosceles triangle. Draw F.V and T.V. and determine its
inclination with V.P.

CW4: Class Work Problems

Q1. A square prism with side of base 40 mm and axis height 60 mm is


resting on H.P. on one of its base corner such that its axis is inclined at
300 to the H.P. and parallel to V.P. Draw its projections
Q2. A right circular cylinder of base diameter 40 mm and axis height 60
mm has a point of the base circle on H.P. with axis making an angle of
450 with H.P. and parallel to the V.P. Draw its projections
Q3. A hexagonal prism with edge of bars 30 mm and height 70 mm has
its edge of base in the VP and the base surface is inclined at 30° to VP
and perpendicular to HP. Draw its projections
Q4. A square pyramid, 40 mm base sides and axis 60 mm long, has a
triangular face on the H.P. and the vertical plane containing the axis
makes an angle of 450 with the VP. Draw its projections. Take apex
nearer to VP.
Q5. Draw the projections of cone, base 45 mm diameter and axis 50 mm
long, when it is resting on the H.P. on a point on its base circle with –(a)
the axis making an angle of 300 with H.P. and 450 with V.P; (b) the axis
making an angle of 300 with H.P. and its top view making 450 with V.P
Q6. A pentagonal pyramid of 30 mm edge of base and 60 mm axis is
lying on one of its triangular surface in the V.P. and edge of the base
contained by triangular face makes an angle of 450 to the H.P. Draw its
front view and top view having base nearer to the observer.

Q8 Two kids are playing with a toy which in the form of frustum of a
square pyramid whose bottom side is 6o mm and top side is of 30 mm
with axis height 70 mm .first kid held a toy in such a way that it is above
the ground and axis is inclined at 30 degree to HP and parallel to VP.
Another kid hits a toy in such a way that parallelism of axis of toy to VP
is lost and it is now inclined at 45 degree to VP but it retains its original
inclination with HP. Draw projections of toy on VP and HP.

A4 : Assignment (On A-3 Size sketch Book)

Q1. Hexagonal pyramid side of base 50 mm and Axis height 100 mm is


resting on one of its corner of base in HP such that axis is inclined at 30
degree to HP and TV of an axis is inclined at 40 degree to VP. Draw its
projections if apex is away from observer
Q2. A cone, base 50 mm diameter and axis 60 mm long rests on its
circular rim on the HP with the axis making an angle of 30 degree with
HP and its top view making an angle of 45 with VP. Draw the
projections if apex is nearer to observer.
Q3. : A pentagonal pyramid 30 mm base sides & 60 mm long axis, is
freely suspended from one corner of base so that a plane containing its
axis remains parallel to VP. Draw it’s three views.

CW5: Class Work Problems

Q1. : A pentagonal prism, 30 mm base side & 50 mm axis is standing on


Hp on its base whose one side is perpendicular to VP. It is cut by a
section plane 450 inclined to Hp, through midpoint of axis. Draw FV,
sec.TV & sec. Side view. Also draw true shape of section and
Development of surface of remaining solid.
Q2. A right circular cone having diameter of base 50 mm, axis length 70
mm resting on its base in H.P. is cut by a cutting plane perpendicular to
V.P. and inclined to H.P. and bisects axis. Draw F.V, Sectional T.V.,
Sectional Side View and True shape of section. Also develop lateral
surface of lower remaining portion of cone
Q3. A hexagonal pyramid base 25 mm side, axis 55 mm long has its
base on HP with edge of of base parallel to VP. A section plane
perpendicular to VP and inclined at 60 degrees to HP bisects the axis of
the pyramid. Draw FV, sectional TV, and true shape of the section and

Q4. A cylinder, 40 mm diameter and 80 mm long stand vertically on its


circular base. It is cut by A.V.P. inclined at 450 to V.P. passing through
axis of a cylinder. Draw the sectional F.V., T.V.and sectional S.V. and
true shape of section. Also show development of lateral surface of
truncated cylinder.

Q5 A square pyramid of 40 mm base and 70 mm height stand with its


base in the H.P. Its sides of base are parallel to V.P. An auxiliary
inclined plane cuts the pyramid passing through a point on axis 30 mm

and True shape of section .Also develop lateral surface of pyramid
assuming apex is removed.
Q6. A cone of base 70 mm diameter and axis 90 mm long is resting on
its base on H.P. It is cut by a section plane perpendicular to VP and
parallel to and 15 mm away from one of its end generators. Draw
Sectional T.V, F.V., Sectional S.V. and true shape of section. Also draw
the development of lateral surface.

A5: Assignment (On A-3 Size sketch Book)

Q1. A square pyramid of 30 mm edge of base and 50 mm height is


resting on its base with one of the edge of the base with one of the edge
of the base perpendicular to V.P. It is cut by an A.I.P. in such a a way
that it bisects the axis and is inclined at 450 to the H.P. Draw elevation,
sectional plan, sectional end view and true shape of section. And also
draw the development of lateral surface.
Q2. A cylinder of 60 mm diameter and 80 mm long stands with its
circular base on H.P.A section plane perpendicular to VP and inclined at
600 to HP cuts the axis at a point 20 mm from its top end. Draw the
sectional T.V., F.V., Sectional S.V. and true shape of section. Also draw
its development of lateral surface.
Q3. : A Cube of side 50 mm is lying on HP on its square base. It is cut
by a section plane such that a true shape of section is trapezium of
parallel sides equal to length of diagonal of a square face for one side

Q1. A hexagonal pyramid, base 25 mm and axis 65 mm long is resting


on its base on HP with two sides of base parallel to VP. It is cut by a
section plane perpendicular to VP , inclined at 450 to HP and
intersecting the axis at a point 22 mm above the base. Draw the FV,
Sectional TV and true shape of section. Also draw the development of
lateral surface.
Q2. A cylinder, 30 mm diameter and 50 mm long stand vertically on its
circular base. It is cut by A.I.P. inclined at 450 to H.P. which bisects axis
of a cylinder. Draw the sectional T.V., F.V. and sectional S.V. and true
shape of section. Also show development of lateral surface of truncated
cylinder.
Q3. A cone of base diameter 65 mm and axis height 80 mm is resting on
HP on one of its generators with axis parallel to VP. It is cut by
Auxiliary Inclined Plane (A.I.P.) such that the true shape of section is
parabola with axis length equal to 65 mm. Draw FV, TV and true shape
of section. Also draw the development of lateral surface of cone
removing apex.
