Huge problem, musicologists. I don't believe it's solvable.

I know nothing of the art of dancing. Here is my question: Is there any way to make
sense of a marking of MM 80 for a waltz, in Czerny’s terms?

MM=88: 88 bpm, that is 88 AUDIBLE CLICK SOUNDS PER MINUTE, makes perfect sense as
'International Standard Waltz' – which is 84-90 bpm.

The Viennese waltz, at least today, is about 180 bpm. Divided by 3, that's one
dotted half note = 60.

So what on earth is Czerny talking about??

Clearly it's a mass pile of ugly squiggling word ambiguity in which absolutely any
whacko can make his case convincingly.

Maelzel's patent application claims that the device will indeed produce a number of
audible clicks or beats per minute (Another exploitable ambiguity which I will
fucking IGNORE). But, were actually manufactured examples of the device faithful to
this? What if they varied wildly in number = supposed bpm?
