Job Title : General Worker


Reporting to : Administrative Assistant

Purpose of the Job


Maintains grounds and buildings in order to create a beautiful, peaceful and relaxing
environment for children and staff and thus contribute to promoting an inviting image of
organisation to the public.

Principal Job Accountabilities (Key Outputs of the Job)

Output 1: Beautiful Environment


Definition: Plants, tends and waters trees, shrubs, flower-beds, rockeries and lawns
within the grounds to ensure a beautiful learning environment is created
for children.

Output 2: Cleaned Environment


Definition: Picks up litter found in gardens, replaces dead plants and discards waste
matter in a neat and orderly manner.

Output 3: Conserved Natural Resources


Definition: Recycles waste materials in order to promote conservation of natural
resources.

Output 4: Preserved Natural Environment


Definition: Cultivates indigenous trees, shrubs and flowers to preserve the natural
environment of surrounding.

Output 5: Maintained Grounds


Definition: Keeps neat and tidy grounds to ensure that modest standard surroundings
are maintained
Output 6: Organisation Image
Definition: Cleans public areas, conveniences, including garages, car ports, parking
areas, paving and pathways to ensure a positive image of the organisation
is projected to the public

Output 7: Maintained Garden Tools


Definition: Keeps garden tools and equipment from deterioration or damage to ensure
good working order.

JOB FACTORS
Education
Grade nine (9) certificate with knowledge of gardening practices

Experience
Less than six (6) months of skilled work in general maintenance of surroundings of
buildings, public areas, car ports, raising and caring for perennial and annual flowering
plants and shrubs in a controlled environment

Interpersonal Communication Skills


Communication occurs with employees within immediate work area, employees within
the organization and clients. The most significant contacts are: Supervisor (for direction,
advice and support); and with contractors who may be delivering supplies and other
materials to the job site.

Problem solving
Deals with highly repetitive work and well defined with little variation. Task and
activities are typically similar/related in terms of the skills and knowledge used and
where tasks are usually well defined

Decision making
Makes routine decisions within job requirements and receives very close guidance and
supervision, and has little choice of action.

Responsibility for work of others


There is no supervision of staff

Job impact
Generally impact is experienced within work area, and outside the organization. Mistakes or
errors can result in poorly maintained grounds and gardens damage to the building
environment or dent organisation image. Close guidance and supervision is provided and
the consequences of errors or mistakes are usually detected by supervisor.

Working conditions
The demands of the job regularly results in fatigue, requiring periods of rest. There is
likelihood of minor cuts, bruises, abrasions, or minor illnesses resulting from hazards in
the job.
