I. DAAD FELLOWSHIP/SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMMES


1. PROGRAMME FOR INDIAN ACADEMICS

1.1 Fellowships for Young Researchers and Recent Post Doctoral Scholars

Objective: These fellowships are meant for advanced studies and


research at universities and research institutes in
Germany to enable young scholars, scientists and
university teachers to broaden their knowledge in their
fields, to give them an opportunity to carry out research
in Germany, and to familiarize themselves with current
methods of research there.

Target Group: Candidates who are working as teachers in Indian


universities or recognized institutes of univ ersity
standard, Indian Institutes of Technology, and scientists
at CSIR Labs and institutes, and at research institutes of
national importance.

Fellowship Benefits: Monthly stipend, study and research subsidy,


contribution to health insurance, German language
course, air-fare.
Fellowships are awarded, initially, for one year preceded
by a two-to-six, most commonly four-month German
language course in Germany, arranged and funded by
DAAD. Upon application and proper documentation,
they are extendable up to another 12 months.

Commencement of Language Course: Beginning of April (6-month course)


Beginning of June (4-month course)

Duration of Fellowship: 1st October – 30th September of the


following year.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Degree/Prior Work Experience: Candidates must possess a Master's degree with a


first class at Master's or Bachelor's level plus at least two years of teaching or
research experience;
• Age Limit: Candidates should not be more than 32 years of age on 1st October of
the year in which the fellowship begins;
• Domicile: Candidates must be residing in India at the time of application;
• Confirmation of Placement: Candidates must have a recent-dated letter of placement
from a German professor; scholars need a written confirmation that states that their
research plan is feasible at the selected German university/institute, and that
placement for the duration of at least one year to carry out research would be
available. The confirmation should not be older than 6 months; failure to obtain such

Note: Preference will be given to candidates who are permanently employed and whose
employers undertake to re-employ them on return; exceptions will be considered on an
individual basis.

Application Procedure:

• These fellowships are announced once a year by the New Delhi office of the
DAAD.
• The announcement of the fellowships is made sometime in July/August.

Subject Fields:

All subject fields, excluding Medicine, Music and the Arts.

Note:

These fellowships are not for obtaining Bachelors’ or Masters’ degrees in Germany!

1.2 Sandwich Model Fellowships for Ph.D. Registered Scholars

Objective: The "Sandwich Model" is a multi-phased fellowship


scheme which allows scholars who are registered for their
Ph.D. at an Indian university/institute to carry out research
for their thesis alternately in India and in Germany under
the supervision of an Indian as well as a German guide
according to a schedule previously drafted out in
consultation with them.

Target Group: Open to scholars registered for a doctorate degree in


India.

Fellowship Benefits: Monthly stipend, study and research subsidy,


contribution to health insurance, German language
course, air-fare.
Fellowships are awarded initially for one year preceded
by a two-to-six, most commonly four-month German
language course in Germany arranged and funded by
DAAD. Upon application and proper documentation,
they are extendable up to another 12 months.

Commencement of Language Course: Beginning of April (6-month course)


Beginning of June (4-month course)

Duration of Fellowship: 1st October – 30th September of the


following year.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Degree: Candidates must possess a Master's degree with a first class at Master's or
Bachelor's level.

research plan is feasible at the selected German university/institute and that
placement for the duration of at least one year to carry out research would be

prior agreement will disqualify the candidate from the competition for this type of
fellowship.
• German Language Skills: Candidates in the fields of Humanities and Social
Sciences must have a good knowledge of the German Language.
• Age Limit: Candidates should not be more than 36 years of age on 1st October of
the year in which the fellowship begins.
• Registration: Candidates must be registered for their Ph.D. Degree in India and
should have already started working on their thesis. The Doctorate Degree is awarded
by the Indian university/institute exclusively.

• These fellowships are announced once a year by the New Delhi office of the
DAAD.
• The announcement of the fellowships is made sometime in July/August.

The fellowships, as a rule, are not for obtaining the Ph.D. degrees in Germany.

1.3 Fellow ships for a Doctorate Degree in Germany

Objective: These fellowships are for those who wish to get their
doctorate degree from a German university or institute.

Target group: Scholars with admission to a doctoral programme at a


German university or institute.

Fellowship Benefits: Monthly stipend, study and research subsidy,


contribution to health insurance, German language
course, air-fare.
Fellowships are awarded initially, for one year preceded
by a two-to-six, most commonly four-month German
language course in Germany arranged and funded by
DAAD. Upon application and proper documentation, as
well as evaluation of the candidates’ work done in the
previous year, they are extendable up to a maximum of 4
years (by which time the doctorate study should be
completed).

Duration of Fellowship: 3 – 4 years maximum

Eligibility Criteria:

• Age Limit: Candidates must not be more than 32 years of age on 1st October
of the year in which the fellowship begins;
• Degree: A Master’s degree, with first class at Bachelor’s or Master’s level;
• Confirmation of placem ent: Candidates must have an admission letter from a
German university/ institute to study for a doctorate degree/ must get
confirmation from the German university/ institute stating that they fulfill the
requirements to carry out doctoral studies there;
• German language skills: Candidates in the fields of Humanities and Social
Sciences must have a good knowledge of the German Language .

Besides the core qualifications,


• Candidates should have detailed correspondence with German guide
regarding the topic of the thesis;
• Candidates must be residing in India at the time of application;
• If field studies have to be done in India, this should be clearly stated in the
research plan;
• Candidates must complete their studies within 3½ years (maximum 4
years);
• Candidates must sign a bond pledging that they will return to India after
completion of fellowship period in Germany.

1.4 Short-term Fellowships for Ph.D. Registered Scholars

Objective: To enable scholars registered for a Ph.D. at universities


or research institutes in India, to collect material in
Germany for the completion of their doctoral thesis.

Target Group: Scholars registered for their Ph.D. at universities or


research institutes in India.

Duration of Fellowship: Two to six months.

Fellowship Benefits: Monthly stipend, contribution to health insurance, air


fare.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Age Limit: Candidates must not be older than 32 years at the time of inception of
the fellowship period.
• Registration: Candidates must be registered for their Ph.D. with a university or
research institute of university standard in India.
• Research Status: Research must be at an advanced stage at the time of application.

Application Procedure:
• These fellowships are announced once a year by the New Delhi office of the
DAAD.
• The announcement of the fellowships is made sometime in July/August.

• The application should be submitted to the DAAD New Delhi office and NOT the

• Economics, Education, History, Philosophy, Mathematics, Natural Sciences,


German language and literature.

Note:
• An extension of the fellowship is not possible.
• The 2 – 6 months fellowship period should be planned to fit in the calendar year
for which applied and should not extend into the next year.

1.5 Sandwich Model Scholarships for M.S. (Research) and M.Tech. students
at the Indian Institutes of Technology

Objective: The "Sandwich Model" programme for Masters students


of the IITs is a multi-phased scheme in which candidates
carry out the required course work in India, and their
project work in Germany, under the supervision of a
guide from their Indian Institute of Technology, as well
as a mentor from one of 7 participating German
Universities of Technology (Technische Hochschulen/
Universitäten at Aachen, Berlin, Darmstadt, Dresden,
Karlsruhe, München and Stuttgart), according to a
schedule previously drafted out.

Target Group: Candidates who are enrolled in an M.S. (Research) or an


M.Tech. programme, and are registered for course work
at an IIT according to the regulations of the IIT.

Scholarship Scheme:

• A 6-week German language course at the German university/institute.


• 6 months project work for the Master’s thesis at a German university;
• 4 to 8 weeks practical training/internship in German industry may be arranged upon
request and on availability of placements.

Scholarship:

Monthly stipend, contribution to health insurance, German language course.

Commencement of Language Course: Beginning of September

Duration of Scholarship: Mid-October to Mid-April

Eligibility Criteria:

• Residence and Enrollment: Applicants must be Indian nationals currently enrolled for
M.Tech. or M.S. (Research) (with CGPA of no less than 8.00) at an Indian Institute of
Technology.
• Age Limit: Not more than 32 years upon commencement of scholarship.
• Application Content: The application must specify the title of the Master’s thesis, as
of now, and include a draft of the envisaged research project in Germany (after
consultation with the German mentor, this might need some modification, depending
on its feasibility at the German university).
• Post Selection Formalities: A detailed time and work schedule, planned out in
consultation with the Indian and German mentors, has to be submitted later on, and
only by the selected students.

Application Procedure:

• Applications are to be submitted to the concerned Dean of the IIT in question for
nomination to DAAD. DAAD together with representatives from the participating
German universities makes the final selection and confirms placement.
• Scholarships are awarded only after definite placement has been obtained at one of
the participating universities.

1.6 Helmholtz-DAAD Fellowship for Doctoral and Postdoctoral Students

Type A: Fellowships for a Doctorate Degree in Germany

Objective: These fellowships are meant to give scholars an


opportunity to get their Doctorate Degree from a
Helmholtz Centre in Germany.

Target group: Young scientists and researchers from all around the
world who are able to substantiate their excellent study
or research achievements.

Areas of Research: Earth and Environment, Health, Key Technologies,


Structure of Matter, Transport and Space (please check
the website of the Helmholz-Foundation for details:

Fellowship Benefits: Monthly stipend of Min. 975/- euros; international travel


expenses and health insurance is also possible

Duration of Fellowship: 36 months

Eligibility Criteria:

• Age Limit: Candidates must not be more than 32 years of age;


• Degree: Candidates must possess a good Master’s degree;
• Language Skills: Candidates must have an excellent knowledge of English or
German, proven through submission of appropriate language certificates e.g.
(TOEFL: 550/217; DSH).

Objective: These fellowships are to give Doctoral Students,


registered for and doing their Ph.D. in their home, the
opportunity to do research at a Helmholtz Centre in
Germany.

Target Group: Young scientists and researchers from all around the
world who are able to substantiate their excellent study
or research achievements.

Areas of Research: Earth and Environment, Health, Key Technologies,

Type C: Fellowships for Recent Post Doctoral Scholars

Objective: These fellowships are meant to give scholars (who


completed their doctorate in 2003or 2004), an
opportunity to do research at a Helmholtz Centre in
Germany.

Target Group: Young scientists and researchers from all around the
world who are able to substantiate their excellent study
or research achievements

Fellowship Benefits: Monthly stipend of 1,840/- euros

Areas of Research: Earth and Environment, Health, Key Technologies,

2. PROGRAMME FOR INDIAN PROFESSIONALS

DAAD scholarships for Postgraduate Courses with Relevance to Developing


Countries for Professionals

Objective: To give academically trained professionals in leading


positions the opportunity to pursue postgraduate
education and training in their particular field .

Target Group: Professionals in public administration, or in the public or


private enterprise sector holding a four year Bachelor’s
degree or a Master’s degree, and having at least two
years of work experience in related field .

Scholarship Benefits: Monthly allowance, language course, international air -


fare, contribution to health insurance.

Commencement of Beginning of April for courses conducted in German and


Language Course: beginning of August for courses conducted in English

Commencement of October (for most courses)


Scholarship:

Duration of Scholarship: 1 – 2 years depending on the length of the course

Eligibility Criteria:

• Qualification: Candidates must have a 4-years Bachelor’s Degree or a Master’s


degree in the relevant subject (unless expressly stated otherwise, Ph.D. -holders are
not encouraged to apply).
• Work Experience: Candidates must have two years of professional experience in
related field after obtaining the core qualification.
• Employment/Sponsorship: Candidates must be permanently employed and must be
sponsored by their employers.
• Age Limit: For most courses, candidates may not be older than 36 years at the time
of application. For exceptions to this rule, please enquire at the DAAD New Delhi
office.

Application forms for DAAD scholarships may be obtained from the New Delhi office
of DAAD, or from the German institution of higher education itself; they can also be
downloaded from the website:

Applications may be submitted to DAAD New Delhi office by 31st August; or to the
universities and Fachhochschulen where the application deadline is 15th October of

Cooperation Engineering and related fields, Mathematics, Regional Planning,

3. PROGRAMMES FOR FACULTY AND STAFF OF RESEARCH


INSTITUTIONS/LABORATORIES

3.1 CSIR-DAAD Exchange of Indian and German Scientists

Objective: To enable senior scientists of the CSIR-laboratories to


visit German institutions to carry out specific research
projects, and German scientists to visit CSIR
laboratories and institutions.

Target Group: Indian Scientists with permanent positions at CSIR


Institutes/Laboratories, nominated by CSIR
Headquarters.
German scientists on request and invitation of the CSIR.

Benefits: International air-fare to be covered by the sending side.


Local hospitality to be extended by the receiving side.

Duration: Visit of Indian scientists to Germany for 2–3 months.


Visit of German scientists to India for 2 weeks to 3
months.

Application Procedure: The scientists to be invited are nominated by the CSIR.


DAAD takes 10 to 12 weeks to process the applications.

Note:

• Direct application to the DAAD New Delhi Office is not possible. Applications
must be directed to CSIR.
• Invitations are issued on reciprocal basis. The visits of Indian and German
scientists have to be equal in number.

3.2 Study Visits of IIT Faculty Members and German Counterparts

Objective: To promote collaboration between the Indian Institutes


of Technology and German Universities of Technology
(Aachen, Berlin, Darmstadt, Dresden, Karlsruhe,
München, Stuttgart).

Target Group: Permanent faculty members of the IITs;


German scientists/ professors on request and invitation
of IITs.

Scheme: International air-fare to be covered by the sending side;


local hospitality to be extended by the receiving side.

Duration: Visits for a period of one to three months.

Application Procedure: Faculty to be invited are to be nominated by the IIT;


DAAD takes 4 to 6 weeks to process.

Note:

• Direct application to the DAAD New Delhi office is not possible. Interested
applicants must submit applications to their institutes. The IITs will forward their
nominations to the DAAD in their order of priority. Applications must be
submitted to the specific IIT which will nominate eligible candidates.
• The invitations are issued on reciprocal basis. The visits of Indian and German
scientists have to be equal in number.

3.3 Guest Lecturership at German Universities/“Gastdozenten an deutschen


Hochschulen“

Objective: To strengthen the international dimension of teaching in


the German higher education system.

Target Group: Qualified full-time Indian faculty from universities or


research institutions/laboratories.

Duration of Stay: As a rule, the teaching assignment is for a period of one


year; however, it should be for a minimum of one
semester up to a maximum of two years.

Scheme: Air-fare, salary, allowances

Eligibility Criteria: Eligible are those candidates who have an outstanding


teaching and research record at universities in India. At
the time of application they must still be in active
service.

Application Procedure:
• The German institution interested in inviting an Indian faculty to teach has to apply
to DAAD Head Office along with the curriculum vitae and list of publications of
the Indian faculty.
• Applications have to be made by the Head of the Department, Dean of the Faculty
or Vice-Chancellor of the German universities/institutes.
• Direct applications from Indian faculty members are not acceptable.
• Applications must be submitted to DAAD Head Office by German host
universities/institutes between 15th June and 15th December.
• It takes at least 4 months to select and process the applications. Only complete
applications can be considered. The application will be assessed on the basis of a
peer review of professors from German institutions of higher education.

Note:
• DAAD supports these long-term appointments in any field of specialization.
• The courses, which are an integral part of the curriculum of the department in
question, are to be taught in the incumbents’ native language – or the language
most commonly used in academic teaching in their home country – but in any
event in a language other than German.

4. FOLLOW-UP PROGRAMMES FOR FORMER DAAD FELLOWSHIP


HOLDERS FROM INDIA

4.1 Reinvitation Programme/”Wiedereinladungen”

Objective: Research visits; visits to get acquainted with the latest


developments in Germany.

Target Group: Former DAAD fellowship holders (duration of


fellowship : minimum one year) on active duty.

Duration of Visit: 2 months

Scholarship Benefits: Monthly allowance

Eligibility criteria:

• Air-fare is to be covered by the Indian side.


• Time Frame: At least three years must have elapsed since the applicant’s return
from Germany supported by a DAAD fellowship (of minimum one year duration).
• Contact: Applicants should have remained in regular scientific contact with their
counterparts in Germany after their return to India.
• Placement: Applicants have to submit copies of correspondence with their German
counterparts – not older than 6 months – agreeing to the proposed research plan and
the suggested time schedule.
• Leave: Applicants must submit a certificate from their employers granting paid
research leave for the duration of their visit.

Application Procedure:

Eligible candidates should send their applications for visits under the reinvitation
programme to DAAD New Delhi Office by 15th October of the preceding year.
Application forms are available August onwards.

Note:
• At least two/thirds of the stay should be spent at one particular institute.
• Former Humboldt fellows should apply for revival of their fellowship or for a
reinvitation to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

4.2 Grants for Books and Journals

Fellowship-holders from the area of German/German Studies are eligible for this grant
if they have availed of the DAAD fellowship for 5 months or more. Former DAAD
fellowship-holders (who have availed of a fellowship of more than one year’s
duration) may apply for donations of books or subscriptions to journals published in
Germany; publications from elsewhere will be considered only in exceptional cases.
The value should not exceed Euro 200 per year. Requests indicating autho r, title, year
of publication and publishers should be submitted "online" at www.daad.de/alumni-
buchspenden.

4.3 Equipment Grant


Objective: To strengthen academic and scientific relations with
foreign countries. The aim of this programme is to
support teaching, research, development and consultancy
services by providing materials and equipment to
universities or comparable institutes in developing
countries.
Eligibility: Applications may be submitted by former DAAD
grantees, permanently employed at universities or
comparable academic institutions in their home country
for grant of scientific equipment and other material
related to a specific study or research project with
practical orientation and being used for teaching and/or
for a research programme.
Value: The maximum value of the equipment and material,
including transportation from Germany to the port of
entry, should not exceed Euro 20,450.
Note:

• The grant will be made to the university or institute of the former fellowship -
holder.
• The recipient institutes must undertake to install, maintain, and repair the
equipment at their own cost and to bear relevant fees accruing in India.
• Whenever possible, a representative of DAAD and/or from the German Embassy
or Consulate General should be invited to inaugurate the installation of the
equipment on site.

4.4 Participation in International Conferences/Symposia in Germany

Objective: Within the framework of the DAAD Re-invitation


Programme, former DAAD grantees of one year
fellowship schemes can apply for a grant for
participation at international conferences/ symposia in
Germany.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Applicants must have been in active service for at least 3 years in their home
university/institute since their return from Germany.
• Applicants should submit proof of active participation at the
conference/symposium e.g. acceptance of oral presentation of a paper, invitation to
chair a scientific session at the conference.

Financial Support:

• For conference participation DAAD grants a lump sum allowance.


• Applicants must confirm in writing that no other financial support is being
received from any other funding agency (from the organisers of the conference or
international funding agencies in India/Germany).

Application Procedure:

• Former DAAD grantees, planning to participate in international conferences/


symposia in Germany, in exceptional cases also in neighbouring countries, must
apply well in advance under the DAAD Re-invitation Programme. Applications
must reach DAAD New Delhi Office by 15th October every year for visits
envisaged in the following year.
• Applicants should submit supporting documents providing evidence of necessary
expenditure necessary to attend the conference (including costs of accommodation
and board)

Note:

• In addition to the grant for participation in conferences/symposia, DAAD can also


provide support to invited scholars for short visits to hold discussions with their
German counterparts.
• In exceptional cases applications received after the deadline are also considered, in
view of the fact that confirmation of acceptance of conference papers often come
rather late.

4.5 Support to DAAD-Alumni Associations for Academic Events

Objective: To maintain contact with former grantees, working in institutions of


higher education and research outside Germany

Alumni Associations can apply for financial support from DAAD

• in finding suitable German speakers for conference


• for travel and subsidies for German speakers at a conference
• for travel and subsidies for DAAD alumni coming from abroad to participate in the
events
• for funding towards the cost of an event

Eligibility:

• The event must be an academic conference with participants from the academic
sector. No funding is available for purely social events.
• Majority of participants must be DAAD alumni or beneficiaries of sur-place
funding schemes.
• The association must be recognised according to national law.

Application Procedures:

• Application should reach DAAD New Delhi at least six months prior to the
event along with the following information:
– description of the proposed event (provisional programme and list of
participants)
– detailed budget proposal (including information about possible grants from
other sources)

SCHOLARS

5.1 German Postgraduates, Doctoral Candidates, and Recent Post Doctoral


Scholars/“Vertiefungs- und Kurzstipendien für Deutsche”

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), co-sponsored and co-funded by
DAAD, offers a number of fellowships for German postgraduates for study and
research in India.
For further information on the profile of the scholarships, eligibility requirements,
application procedures and deadlines, please consult the DAAD brochure “Studium,
Forschung, Lehre – Förderungsmöglichkeiten im Ausland für Deutsche” which is
available at all Akademische Auslandsämter of German universities and
“Fachhochschulen” as well as from DAAD Bonn and from the internet at

in India – or to departments at Indian universities wishing to host a German scholar –

5.2 DAAD-IIT Scholarship Programme: “Diplom -Studienarbeit an den Indian


Institutes of Technology”

Objective: To collect material for the final thesis (Diplomarbeit) or


a supervised project (Studienarbeit) at an IIT in India

Target Group: Diplom-students in Engineering Sciences, with above


average qualifications

Scholarship Benefits: Monthly stipend from the IIT; lump sum for air -fare and
monthly allowance from DAAD.

Duration of Scholarship: 3 – 4 months

Eligibility Criteria:

• Engineering students registered at a German university;


• Candidates with above average qualification;
• Candidates must have been allocated a topic for the Diplomarbeit or Studienarbeit;
• Candidates should establish contact with IIT faculty for placements.

German Universities of Technology;

5.3 German Guest Lecturership Programme/ “Gastdozenturen”

Under the Indo-German Cultural Agreement, visits of German professors and


scientists (from any discipline) to universities and research institutes as short -term (1
to 6 months) guest-lecturers in all disciplines, with full-time teaching assignments
according to the host universities’ specifications and conditions, can be sponsored by
DAAD. A financial contribution from the host universit ies is expected.
Please note that it takes between 4 and 6 months to process complete applications.

5.4 DAAD-CSIR Exchange of Scientists/ “Deutsch-Indischer


Wissenschaftleraustausch”

Under this programme – which is the German portion of the programme described in
full under Section 3.1 – German scientists from disciplines corresponding to those
represented by the CSIR laboratories in India, may be invited, with the concurrence of
DAAD and CSIR, for periods of between 14 days and three months, to do joint
collaborative research with their Indian counterparts.

Note:
Direct application to DAAD New Delhi is not possible. Applications must be
submitted by the CSIR institute/labs to the CSIR headquarters which will forward the
nominations.

5.5 Study Visit to Indian Institutes of Technology

Under this programme - which is the German portion of the programme described in
full under section 3.2 - German scientists from universities in Germany can visit an
Indian Institute of Technology for a period of 1 to 3 months to carry out collaborative
projects.
The IITs have to nominate the faculty to be invited by DAAD.

5.6 German Teachers of German/ German Studies/ German as a Foreign


Language/“Lektoren für die Deutsche Sprache”, “Sprachassistenten” und
“Praktikanten für Deutsch als Fremdsprache (DaF)”

5.6.1 “Lektoren für die Deutsche Sprache”

For many years, DAAD has been assisting in placing German lecturers of German
Language and Literature/German Studies at universities in India, on a cost -sharing
basis. These are universities where the Department of German or the German Se ction
in a Department of Foreign Languages is particularly strong and, as a rule, has a
Masters Degree as well as an M.Phil. and/or Ph.D. programme in German.
Heads of Departments, Deans, and Vice-Chancellors may inquire for details at the
DAAD New Delhi Office.

Note:

Qualified German nationals may apply in response to public advertisements in the


German media, and through DAAD Bonn only.

5.6.2 “Sprachassistenten”

“Sprachassistenten” are young German graduates of German/ German as a foreign


language, sponsored by DAAD to teach German language and culture at Indian
institutes of higher education. During their tenure of one academic year (9 – 10
months), they usually support a DAAD lecturer in his/her work.

5.6.3 “Praktikanten für DaF”

German Departments or German Sections of Foreign Language Departments which


need the assistance of native teachers of German, have the possibility of getting
advanced and specially qualified student intern (“Praktikanten”) through DAAD for 2-
3 months. Their academic specialization from select professional institutes for second
language acquisition in Germany is “German as a Foreign Language” (“Deutsch als
Fremdsprache” – DaF).

6. PRACTICAL TRAINING/INTERNSHIP FOR INDIAN AND GERMAN


STUDENTS

Objective: To give an opportunity to Indian and German


students to carry out practical training
(internship) as a part of their on-going course
of study.

Target Group: Advanced senior level students enrolled at a


university/research institute.

Duration: 2 to 6 months

Scheme: Students must cover their own air-fare;


employer/host institutions pay nominal monthly
allowance for living expenses.

Application Procedure: Candidates are expected to get in touch with


institutions where they wish to go for training
themselves, i.e. establish contact with
appropriate employers and get the necessary
letter of acceptance. Thereafter, they can write to
DAAD New Delhi for necessary departure
clearances.

Indian Participants: DAAD, in a very few cases, arranges placements


for training in specified fields. Information on
this can be obtained from DAAD New Delhi
Office January onwards.

German Participants: Candidates should get in touch with local


IAESTE committees.

7. STUDY AND INFORMATION VISITS BY GROUPS OF YOUNG


INDIAN AND GERMAN SCHOLARS

Objective: To give an opportunity to Indian and German students


from all disciplines, to familiarise themselves with latest
developments in their respective area of study, and/or
with the current political, economic and cultural affairs
in the host country, under the direction of an
accompanying faculty member. The programme also
aims to develop institutional contacts between German
and foreign higher education institutions.

Target Group: Advanced-level students enrolled at a


university/research institute; group of about 10 to 15
qualified participants, who have already established
contacts with institutions of higher education.

Duration: Visit for a week to maximum 12 days

Indian group funding: The international air-fare is to be paid by the Indian side.
DAAD coordinates the local programme in Germany,
provides an English speaking guide and extends local
hospitality.

German group funding: DAAD can extend support to the German group.
Programme to be arranged in consultation with Indian
institutions of higher educations.

Application Procedure: Indian groups should apply to DAAD New Delhi at least
6 months prior to the proposed visit. Deadline is 15th
November 2005 for Visits taking place in April, May
and June of 2006. For Visits in October November and
December of 2006 the deadline is 15 th May 2006.
German groups have to apply through DAAD Bonn.

Note: Contacts with institutions of higher education must be


established by the groups themselves.

II. ACADEMIC NETWORKING AND INDO-GERMAN


PROJECTS

1. INSTITUTIONS/DEPARTMENTS LINKS PROGRAMME /


HOCHSCHULPARTNERSCHAFTEN

Objective: Institutional and/or departmental links between Indian


educational institutions and their German counterparts.
These links are intended to enhance academic exchanges
on all levels, help in developing joint curricula in areas
of high priority to both partners, and to establish
technology transfer centres in fields with particular
relevance to global development

Funding: German side covers the air-fare of German participants


and local hospitality of Indian participants.
Indian side covers the air-fare of Indian participants and
local hospitality of German participants.

Eligibility Criteria: Projects are deemed especially worthy of support if they


are likely to lead to a long-term institutional connection,
e.g. mutual recognition of diplomas or courses;
furthermore, the establishment of joint postgraduate
courses which are offered in segments at both partner
universities; or joint development of new forms of
teaching and learning.

Application Procedure: Direct application for this programme to the DAAD New
Delhi office is not possible. The German partner
university must submit the application to DAAD Bonn.
The final decision is taken by a special committee in
Germany.

Note: The funding is intended to first and foremost support the


exchange of senior and junior faculty members,
postgraduate (Ph.D. students) between partner institutions.

2. DST – DAAD: INDO-GERMAN PROJECT BASED PERSONS’S


EXCHANGE PROGRAMME (PPP)

Objective: To intensify interaction and research activities among


research groups in India and Germany through funding of
scholars who participate in cooperative research
projects.

Target Group: Highly qualified scientists and researchers, especially


young Ph.D. and postdoctoral students.

Funding Scheme: Indian participants: DST covers the international


travel; DAAD covers the local hospitality in Germany.
German participants: DAAD pays for international
travel, DST the local hospitality in India

Commencement of Programme: June (for a period of two years)

Eligibility Criteria: The investigator should be a scientist from a University,


Deemed University, government recognised R&D
Institute or Laboratory having regular or permanent
position. However, his/her team must include young
research scientists / associates/ Ph.D. students having
cleared NET.

1. ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT FOUNDATION (AvH)

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

Purpose: The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) awards


fellowships to young highly qualified scholars of foreign
nationality for research projects of their own choice in
Germany. The research fellowships are offered on a
worldwide competitive basis. Scholars of all nations and
all academic disciplines may apply for them. Up to 500
research fellowships are available per year.

Duration: 6 – 12 months

Eligibility:

• Foreign scholars who hold an academic degree comparable to the doctorate (Ph.D.
or equivalent) or have attained a comparable academic qualification through
research and academic publications in internationally recognised academic
journals.
• Applicants should be in a position to furnish proof of experience in independent
research at a non-German university or research institute.
• They should submit, if available, recognised academic publications, preferably in
international journals.
• Scholars in the humanities (including social sciences) should possess and have to
prove sound German language abilities.
• Scholars in natural, medical and engineering sciences – if not native speakers –
must possess and have to prove good command of English.
• Applicants should be under the age of 40 at the time of application.

Value: Monthly research fellowship rates range from Euro


2,100 to 3,000. Fellowship values are set by the
Selection Committee. Research fellowships are exempt
from taxation in Germany. A range of other expenses is
also covered.

The “Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and Max Planck Society International
Research Award” is granted through both organisations to internationally recognised
foreign and German scholars enabling them to carry out long-term, project-oriented
joint research over a period of three to a maximum of five years. The awards carry a
maximum value of Euro 750,000.

Nomination requirements:

• Outstanding, internationally recognised research work.


• Nominations may be made to AvH only by heads of German universities or
parent organisations of non-university research institutes may nominate
scholars from all disciplines to AvH.

3. SOUTH-ASIA INSTITUTE (SAI), UNIVERSITY OF HEIDELBERG

As part of the Cultural Agreement between the Government of India and the Federal
Republic of Germany, the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg, (through the University
Grants Commission (UGC),) offers annually one three-months fellowship for a
qualified Indian scholar.This fellowship through the UGC is for research at the South -
Asia Institute of the University of Heidelberg in Germany. Applications are to be
directed to UGC.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

Degree: Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree or the equivalent.

Employment: Applicants must be employed at an Indian university.

Sponsorship: Applicants should be recommended by their universities


and be treated as “on duty” while in Germany, i.e.
entitled to their full regular compensation.

Placement: Applicants should be able to produce recent-dated


correspondence – not older than 6 months – with faculty
members of SAI Heidelberg agreeing to their proposed
research plan and suggested time schedule.

Age Limit: None.
