Introduction
Overview
• The 3rd Holcim Awards competition to promote sustainable construction
worldwide is open for entries from July 1, 2010 until
March 23, 2011 (14:00hrs GMT) at www.holcimawards.org.
• The Holcim Awards is an initiative of the Holcim Foundation for
Sustainable Construction based in Switzerland. The competitions
aim to encourage and inspire a built environment that goes beyond
convention to address the challenges of sustainability. The Holcim
Awards competitions are conducted in cooperation with: ETH Zurich -
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Switzerland; MIT - Massachusetts
Institute of Technology in Cambridge, USA; TJU - Tongji University in
Shanghai, China; UIA - Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City,
Mexico; EAC - Ecole Supérieure d’Architecture de Casablanca, Morocco;
USP - Universidad de São Paulo, Brazil; and Wits - University of the
Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
• English is the principal and legally binding language of the Holcim
Awards competition. Competition entries may be submitted only in
English.
• The prize money for the five regional competitions and the global phase
totals USD 2 million.
• All building projects are eligible to enter the competition if construction
or commercial production had not started before July 1, 2010.
• The 3rd International Holcim Awards competition is held in two phases.
The first phase is the regional Holcim Awards competitions in 2010/11.
The second phase, in which the regional Holcim Awards prize winners
compete, is the global Holcim Awards competition in 2012.
• In addition to construction projects at an advanced stage of design, the
Awards competition seeks visions and ideas at a conceptual level.
The “Next Generation” category is open to student projects created
within university programs at final-year bachelor level or above (including
masters and PhD). All project authors must be final-year bachelor students
or above for part/all of the entry period (July 1, 2010 to March 23, 2011).
• All authors must be at least 18 years of age on March 23, 2011.

Regions
The Holcim Awards competition is comprised of five regional Holcim Awards
competitions (in 2010/11) and the global Holcim Awards (in 2012). The
regional Holcim Awards are based on five geographic areas: Europe, North
America, Latin America, Africa Middle East, and Asia Pacific. Entries in the
competition are allocated to a region based on the location of the project.
In the case of submissions for which a site has not been selected, “Region” is
defined as the principal place of residence of the Main Author.

Step-by-step guide | page

Introduction
Prizes
The total prize money for each cycle of the regional and global Holcim
Awards competitions is USD 2 million.

The prize money for each of the five regional competitions is USD 300,000:
Holcim Awards Gold USD 100,000; Holcim Awards Silver USD 50,000;
Holcim Awards Bronze USD 25,000; at least 4 Acknowledgement prizes
from a total budget of USD 75,000 per region.

On regional level, juries will also award three “Next Generation” prizes from
a total budget of USD 50,000 per region: Holcim Awards “Next Generation”
1st prize USD 25,000, Holcim Awards “Next Generation” 2nd prize USD 15,000,
and Holcim Awards “Next Generation” 3rd prize USD 10,000.

Awards and prizes of the regional competition will be presented at Holcim

Awards ceremonies in each region from September to November 2011. The
projects awarded Holcim Awards Gold, Holcim Awards Silver, or Holcim
Awards Bronze in all regional competitions automatically qualify for the
global Holcim Awards competition in 2012.

The total prize amount for the global competition is USD 500,000:
Global Holcim Awards Gold USD 200,000; Global Holcim Awards Silver USD
100,000; Global Holcim Awards Bronze USD 50,000.

The Holcim Innovation prize for up to three winners is allocated a total

budget of USD 150,000. All prize-winning projects and visions from the five
regional Holcim Awards competitions (Awards, Acknowledgements, and
“Next Generation” prizes) are eligible to be considered for this prize.

All prizes of the global competition will be presented at dedicated Holcim

Awards hand-over events from May 2012.

Prizes will be awarded to the person listed as Main Author on the entry form
as the Holcim Foundation’s sole contact. In the case of a project submitted
by more than one author, the Main Author must indicate how prize money
will be distributed (in percentages) between the Main Author and all Further
Authors listed.

All prizes are subject to the positive outcome of a verification process to

check project eligibility and compliance with local and international laws

and regulations.

Introduction
Juries
After a centrally-performed technical pre-assessment, regional juries will
evaluate and rank all entries. The juries consist of independent, renowned
representatives from science, business and society. The regional juries
are supported by the respective partner university and the global jury is
supported by the Technical Competence Center of the Holcim Foundation
(ETH Zurich, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tongji University).
Please find a list and profiles of all members of the Holcim Awards juries at:
www.holcimawards.org/jury

Step-by-step guide | page

Conditions
Evaluation criteria
The Holcim Awards recognize contributions to sustainable construction
– irrespective of scale – in architecture, landscape and urban design, civil
and mechanical engineering and other related disciplines. The design must
demonstrate proof of sustainability according to the five “target issues” for
sustainable construction.
The “target issues” are listed in this document (see Appendix pages 53-54),
and described in detail at: www.holcimawards.org/target

Project eligibility
Holcim Awards (main) category
The project is ineligible for submission if its execution commences before
July 1, 2010. Building and civil engineering works, and landscape, urban
design and infrastructure projects are deemed to have started construction
when the first site preparation, excavation, and/or environmental
remediation takes place. Materials, products and construction technologies
are deemed to have started production once manufacturing for commercial
returns takes place.

“Next Generation” (student) category

The “Next Generation” category is open to student projects created within
university programs at final-year bachelor level or above (including masters
and PhD). All project authors must be final-year bachelor students or above
for part/all of the entry period (July 1, 2010 to March 23, 2011).

Submissions in the “Next Generation” category use the same Online Entry
Form as used for the Holcim Awards (main) category at:
www.holcimawards.org/enter

Participation
Entries in the Holcim Awards (main) category may be submitted by the
project’s design team which consists of the author(s) and all other persons
responsible for the project. Eligible for participation are private or public
promoters/investors or architects/planners/engineers involved in the
project, providing that they hold the right of authorship or are participating
in agreement with the person(s) holding the right of authorship. Legal
entities and design teams must name an authorized representative who will
act as the responsible contact person (“Main Author”).
Entries in the “Next Generation” category may only be submitted by the
project’s design team, which consists of the author(s) and all other persons
responsible for the project who must all be final-year bachelor students
or above for part/all of the entry period (July 1, 2010 to March 23, 2011).
The submission must be created within a university program at final-year
bachelor level or above (including masters and PhD).

The statements made in the online Declaration of Authorship are considered

to be true and legally binding in compliance with all applicable laws
and regulations. Every author is required to individually clarify his or her
eligibility for participation. The eligibility of the authors will be re-checked
before prizes are conferred.
Step-by-step guide | page
Conditions
All authors must be at least 18 years of age on March 23, 2011.

Impediments/conflict of interest
Ineligible for participation are those who, due to their collaboration in
the preparation or running of the competition, might be in a favored
position, able to influence the jury’s decision or have any other (matured
or unmatured) conflict of interest. This concerns, in particular, all jurors,
examiners and guests as well as their spouses, first- and second-degree
relatives or in-laws and their permanent business or project partners
and the immediate superiors and collaborators of ineligible persons.
Staff of Holcim Group companies, and staff of the partner and associated
universities of the Holcim Foundation may only participate if they are not
directly involved in the preparation or running of the competition.

Consent
By virtue of their participation in or by contribution to the competition, all
parties including participants, jurors, examiners and guests declare their
consent to the present conditions. By contributing to the competition,
entrants agree to accept the decision of the respective jury as final. There is
no right of appeal and no participant shall have recourse to any national or
international court of law.

Ownership and copyright

Although the right of authorship, including protection against the copying
of ideas, and the right to publication of the design remains with each
author, the latter explicitly grants the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable
Construction the right to use the data, documents and files submitted in
their entirety or in part, internally or externally in every form and for any
purpose whatsoever in relation to the Holcim Awards competition.

Documentation
Submitted projects may be compiled by the Holcim Foundation for
Sustainable Construction for public access in electronic and/or printed
format, giving credit to the authors and their collaborators in compliance
with the authorship declaration.

Application procedure
Submission of entries is only possible via the Internet. No written
applications (hardcopy) will be accepted. There are no submission fees to
enter the competition.

You submit your application in five steps, each of which will be saved
separately. Information can be added to the steps in any order and saved for
further updates.

Technical information
System requirements
The Online Entry Form has been optimized for a resolution of 1024 by 768
pixels and the following browsers work best:
– Internet Explorer for Windows from 7.0
– Mozilla Firefox from 2.0
– Opera from 9.0
– Chrome
– Safari

Javascript must be active.

Cookies must be accepted.

Image upload
Image formats
Images must be in JPG, PNG, BMP or TIF format. AutoCad or PDF files are
not permitted. All images must use the RGB color set. Images in CMYK color
set will be rejected. Please convert images into RGB color set and check
resolution and accuracy of color rendering. If you are unable to convert
images, please contact the Helpdesk for assistance.

The images will be presented in landscape format in the proportion of 4:3.

(That means at least: 800 by 600, 1024 by 768, 1280 by 960 or 1240 by 1065
pixels.) Portrait format images may be used, but will not utilize the full
image space available.

Image sizes
File sizes should be large enough to produce clear images in the application
form (maximum 3 MB each). At the same time the size of the image files
influences the size of the PDF file you will receive as confirmation of your
application.

Please ensure that standard characters (see list of standard characters on

p. 17) are used for all entries and all image file names.

Image selection and upload

You can upload images in two ways:
1. Upload several images at once
2. Upload each image separately
You will find detailed information on the procedure for uploading images on
pages 34 to 36 of this guide.

Data transfer rate

Depending on the data transfer rate of your internet connection, the upload
process may take up to several minutes - so please have some patience.
Particulary at the end of the application period (March 23, 2011) when a high
volume of traffic on the website is anticipated, the response time of the
Online Entry Form may slow down.
It is recommended to enter the applications as early as possible.

Step-by-step guide | page 14

Technical difficulties
Log in failed
The most common problems with ID and/or Password include:
1. Check all figures and letters of your ID and Password are entered correctly;
especially use of letter “O” and number “0” (zero).
2. You haven’t register yet. Please click on “New Entry”.
3. You don’t remember your ID or Password. Please complete section “Lost
your ID/Password”.
4. You have started an application but haven’t confirmed Step 2. So, you
haven’t received an ID. Please contact the Helpdesk or start a new entry.
5. You clicked on “New Entry” but nothing happened - please check your
browser settings if you have activated Javascript and allowed cookies.

Problems with proceeding to next step

Make sure that your browser settings allow cookies. Deactivated cookies
may send you back to start page when clicking on “Save” or “Continue”.

Image upload failed

Automatic logout during upload session or error message appears:
1. Make sure that your image files are either in JPG, BMP, PNG or TIF format
and in RGB color set. Image file sizes should not exceed 3MB each.
3. Make sure that you use standard Latin characters in your file names.
4. Check your internet connection. Slow internet connections (e.g. by using
a 56 kilobytes modem) may cause a timeout. You may reduce the file
sizes or use another computer with a faster internet connection (higher
transmission rate).
5. Try to re-set your Internet connection, or at least re-open your web
browser.

Problems with downloading the confirmation PDF

1. Missing or incorrect data within your application - please log-in again and
check all data.
2. Automatic logout because of a slow internet connection - please retry or
contact the Helpdesk.
3. Make sure that your images are either in JPG, BMP, PNG or TIF format and
in RGB color set and that they use standard Latin characters in their file
names.
