My essay will be talking about the question, “Does American Rights Apply to

Everyone” and if people are treated the way they should be in a country representing freedom. I

want to find the answer to why it took awhile for rights to come to certain races or genders and if

they are even true. If everyone should have equal rights, then why are African Americans still

treated in a racist way? Why are women not referred to when the constitution states that all men

should have equal rights? These are the types of questions I will be looking into.

“7 Ways We Know Systemic Racism Is Real.” Http://Www.benjerry.com,

www.benjerry.com/home/whats-new/2016/systemic-racism-is-real. Accessed 7 July 2019.

This article, created by Ben and Jerry’s, shows us the different situations that black

people have to deal with. These situations include wealth, employment, education, criminal

justice, housing, surveillance, and healthcare. Each of these specific areas are given facts that

show black injustice and they compare them to how whites are in the situations showing that

there is systemic racism is all around the United States, which was the point of the article.

The purpose of the article is to show its viewers that there is still racism going around and

it is a problem. Ben and Jerry’s hope that there are people who will do something about this
Brown 2

situation and fix the problems we face. They are aiming towards those who they think needs to

hear the problem and would want to help out and make America more fair.

The article itself does not say who it was written by, but the publisher’s of the article is

Ben and Jerry’s. Ben and Jerry’s is well known for its ice cream and I believe that the source is

trustworthy since the company is reliable. If you do not believe or trust what they say, on the

bottom of the page there is a place where you can learn about who they are.

I believe I can use this source because it shows me the problems America faces with

racism with clear facts. This is one of the aspects I need to talk about in my final paper and this

article greatly helps with what I am looking for.

Brown, Anna. “Key Findings on Americans' Views of Race in 2019.” Pew Research Center,

Pew Research Center, 9 Apr. 2019,

www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/04/09/key-findings-on-americans-views-of-race-in-

2019/. Accessed 7 July 2019.

This article, created by Anna Brown, is another one that uses facts about black people

and comparing them to white people. She used information based on what black, white, hispanic,

and a few other races to show their opinions about black subjects. Some of those subjects include

how they think black people are being treated in different aspects.

The purpose of this article is to show viewers that African Americans are treated more

unfairly in more ways than any other race. By including multiple races on what they think of a

certain situation, it can be shown that African American believe that they are not treated right
Brown 3

and Anna wants to show it to people who may not realize it in order to make a difference. The

fact that this was created in April of this year shows that it has been many years and the situation

is still going around.

The article was created by Anna Brown, who is said to be a research associate focusing

on social and demographic trends research at Pew Research Center. You can find further

research on her to learn if she is credible. The author leaves a source for each statistical fact to

show that the information was not made up.

I can use this article to provide more facts about discrimination against black people. It

can show how other people think on the matter as well and it will get people to realize that

African Americans are treated unfair in many different ways.

Frazee, Gretchen. “What Constitutional Rights Do Undocumented Immigrants Have?” PBS,

Public Broadcasting Service, 25 June 2018,

www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/what-constitutional-rights-do-undocumented-immigrants-

have. Accessed 7 July 2019.

This article, created by Gretchen Frazee, talks about immigration and how they have

rights, even if they are not citizens. She says that everyone who is on U.S. soil has rights but

people are ignoring the rights that they are able to have. She goes on by including the rights that

immigrants are able to possess and how they work. One of these rights include not having the

right against unreasonable search and seizure, which is becoming a problem today.
Brown 4

The writer's purpose in creating this is to get the audience to realize that immigrants have

rights under the law as well and they are still being forced away without having the chance to

apply them. The subject can go as far to police all the way to ICE who may need to see this

before they act recklessly. This was created last year but still had to do with Donald Trumps

matter on taking immigrants immediately back.

The creator of the article, Gretchen Frazee, provides a link to show who she is and show

that she is credible. She also provides links in the article show where the information she

gathered came from. It is also from PBS, which is a well known and trusted organization so the

information there should be well researched.

I plan to use this information in my essay because it will show another aspect of

American rights and how those who have it are treated unfair or without a chance. Immigrants

have rights even if they are not citizens, but because they are on U.S. land.

Friedman, Megan. “14 Ways Women Still Aren't Equal to Men.” Marie Claire, Marie Claire,

6 Nov. 2018, www.marieclaire.com/politics/news/a15652/gender-inequality-stats/.

Accessed 14 July 2019.

This article is about how Women are still not equal to men. Created by Megan Friedman

and Jenny Hollander, it gives 14 reasons of proof that women are still unfairly treated in the

United States. They show that many thing women have equal rights but then give them evidence

with proof that this is not the case.

Brown 5

The author's purpose in writing this is to inform the reader that women are not treated the

way they should be. This could have been made for women who would want to make a

difference or men who could realize how poorly they are treated.

The creators of the article are Megan Friedman and Jenny Hollander. You can find

information about them on their names to determine that they are credible. They give you sites

for each fact so you know the source is credible and reliable as well. The information where they

got it looks like it can be trustworthy.

I think this article can be a great use to my Research Proposal because it applies on how

American rights do not all go for Woman and that they are not treated equally. It also expresses

that white men are the only ones that truly have rights.

Richen, Yoruba. TED, TED Talks, Mar. 2014,

www.ted.com/talks/yoruba_richen_what_the_gay_rights_movement_learned_from_the_ci

vil_rights_movement/transcript#t-127029.

This is a TED Talk made by Yoruba Richen and she talks about how being gay and doing

gay movements act like it were a civil rights movements. She shows that there is racism and

descrimination with black people and gay people and if you are apart of both when they are

trying to contradict each other then you have the worse end. Yoruba see’s that there are tensions

between the gay rights and civil rights movements even though they help each other out.

Yoruba’s purpose in sharing this is to get out and try to get black people and gay people

to help each other because they are aiming for the same goals and rights. This is directed more
Brown 6

torward blcak people and gay and lesbian people so they can see that they are all trying to reach

equality.

Yoruba shares everything that she sees and provides many examples from history but

since it is not writing, you have to go with what she says.

I plan to use this because it shows the stuggles both African Americans and gay people

have to go throught in order to get equal rights. The examples she provides can be used to prove

that they had to fight for the rights that they should already have.

Tello, Monique. “Racism and Discrimination in Health Care: Providers and Patients.”

Harvard Health Blog, Harvard University, 12 Jan. 2017,

www.health.harvard.edu/blog/racism-discrimination-health-care-providers-patients-20170

11611015. Accessed 7 July 2019.

This article, created by Monique Tello, talks about how some people are racsist or show

discrimination between their patients or health providers. It goes into depth on how doctors are

supposed to treat all their patients but they end up not doing so. Not only patients but doctors are

dealing with it too because of their race and heritage. Tello then gives ways on how nobody

should do this and everyone should be treated the same.

The author's purpose in writing this is to spread what she thinks people need to hear.It has

become a problem and she probably wants doctors and patients all together to hear this to
Brown 7

prevent it from continuing. It has been two years since this was posted but it still might be an

issue because racism has never truly ended.

The writer of the article has a link for you to learn more about her to see that she is legit.

She has a list of sites that she used to do her research and you can check it out to see that they are

reliable. This was also posted on an official Harvard University website, which is know for many

that it can be trusted information.

I plan to use this information in my Research Proposal because it greatly reflects on how

people are not treated right and face racism and biases, even from doctors. It proves that the

American dream is supposed to apply to everyone, but not everyone uses it like they are suppose

to.

University, Harvard. YouTube, YouTube, 1 Nov. 2017,

www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zX9CsxZh08. Accessed 7 July 2019

This video, created by Harvard University, is about African American experiences on

discrimination. This hour long video shares with how others act towards black people and how

they do not feel comfortable doing things that everyone should be able to do normally. This

document greatly shows how black people are still treated and how their rights do not feel like

it's truly their rights.

Harvard’s purpose in sharing this is to get out what people need to see and prove if

somebody will do something about the situation. It can go from police officers and racist people
Brown 8

or just to people who want people who wants to do something about this racist injustice. It shows

that even to this day, this problem still exists.

The people who posted the video was the official channel of Harvard University, a well

known and trusted college. There is no sources that can be found because it is mainly just based

on real life people’s experiences.

I plan on using this in my Research Purpose because it proves that African Americans are

not treated fair and their American rights seem like they are not there. This video provides many

examples that I can use to help prove my point.
