Assessments

2 individual projects.

Project reports are required to be handed in to the department office

on Thursdays in week 6 and week 10, before 16.00pm. Each of the
two projects will have an equal weighting of 50%.

Mark will be deducted in the normal fashion if you are late in

handing in for any reason.

Engine Testing and Instrumentation 1

Project 1:

Design and operation of an engine testing facility

Hand in Week 6: Weighting 50%

•The project will be written in to a 3000-word report (single sided, double spaced) with illustrations/ graphs, as you deem necessary.
•You are responsible for the design and operation of an engine testing facility that is used for the development and validation of a
number of internal combustion engines.
•Budget: £1,000,000. The buildings and main services are all in place and should not come into your budgets. (Heat, light, water,
telephone, security and secretarial).
•You will equip two cells:
Cell a) Diesel applications
It is to be used for 1.3 turbo to Euro with Euro 5 in mind and also a 6.3 Tdi off high way engine.
You will specify the airflow through the cell for each engine type, also the heat balance analysis. You will explain how you run any cell
with differing engine types and size.

•Cell b) Gasoline and or CNG fuelled engines.

It is used for 1.6 litre with variable vane turbo charger and variable geometry valve timing. This engine is to run on both CNG

(Compressed Natural Gas) and premium pump gasoline. A 2988 cc 400 BHP engine must also be provided for.
Where applicable, you will measure all variables to ensure that the engines comply with current and expected future regulations up to
the year 2015

•Your facility testing will cover aspects of research and design volatility. In order to undertake this work, you will have to purchase all
the relevant instrumentation, dynamometers etc.
•Within the building, you will assign rooms and areas for various tasks, based upon the data that you will have learnt from your lecture
notes and formal book/net study work.
•You will be expected to produce a list of all your proposed purchases and present an explanation as why you purchased them.

Engine Testing and Instrumentation 2

Project 2:
Hand in Week 10: Weighting 50%

This is to be a 3000-word project report (single sided, double spaced) with illustrations/ graphs, as you deem necessary.

Topics:

Option 1 Design of a Cell for Testing Fuel Cell Powertrains

1. The power test range from 25 to 100KW.
2. The cell configuration and work diagram.
3. Calculate the power, air, water flows.
4. Test procedure, including energy efficiency and performance tests.
5.The hardware to be purchased, including hydrogen fuel tank and measurement.
6. Cost estimation.

Option 2 Design of a Cell for Testing Electric-petroleum Hybrid Vehicle Powertrains

1. The power test range from 25 to 100KW.
2. The cell configuration and work diagram.
3. Calculate the power, air and water flows.
4. Test procedure, including brake recuperation and overall energy efficiency tests.
5. The hardware to be purchased, including electric batteries.
6. Cost estimation.

Option 3 Engine Test Results Analysis

A set of true engine test result data will be given under request. Make analysis and draw conclusions from the results, including
power changes and efficiencies at different operating conditions.
