B. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation
Class, I have a friend from
neighborhood, who wants to meet you. So today, I
brought her here with me to meet you all. Just Yes Ma’am!
help me welcome her. As I count to three, just say,
“hi Aicah”. Am I clear?
Hi Aicah!
Okay!
One, two, three!

Class, I want you to meet Aicah. Aicah

has a problem which also one of the reasons why
she is here. Her father tasked her to watch a
certain music video and list down all the infinitives Yes Ma’am!
present in that song, but she is struggling to
accomplish the task. Would you like to help her?
(The students will be grouped.)
Great!
But before that, I will group you.

I have here the video presentation of

the song, together with the envelopes, which
contain the materials that you will be using. All you
need to do, is to watch the music video and listen
carefully with the song. List down all the infinitives
present in it. I will play the music video only once,
so you really have to focus. Afterwards, you will
be given one minute to review your answers. Post
your work on the board, right after you are finish. Yes, Ma’am!
The group that will be able to list the most number
of infinitives will be declared as the winner. Am I
understood?
Yes, Ma’am!
(The teacher will distribute the
envelopes.)
Are you all ready?

Let us start.
(The teacher will play the music
video.)

PAYPHONE

I'm at a payphone trying to call home

All of my change I spent on you
Where have the times gone? Baby, it's all
wrong
Where are the plans we made for two?

Yeah, I, I know it's hard to remember

The people we used to be...
It's even harder to picture,
That you're not here next to me.

You say it's too late to make it,

But is it too late to try?
And in our time that you wasted
All of our bridges burned down

I've wasted my nights,

You turned out the lights
Now I'm paralyzed.
Still stuck in that time
When we called it love
But even the sun sets in paradise

I'm at a payphone trying to call home

All of my change I spent on you
Where have the times gone? Baby, it's all
wrong
Where are the plans we made for two?

If "Happy Ever After" did exist,

I would still be holding you like this
All those fairy tales are full of it.
One more stupid love song, I'll be sick

Oh, you turned your back on tomorrow

'Cause you forgot yesterday.
I gave you my love to borrow,
But you just gave it away.
You can't expect me to be fine,
I don't expect you to care
I know I've said it before
But all of our bridges burned down.

I've wasted my nights,

You turned out the lights
Now I'm paralyzed.
Still stuck in that time
When we called it love
But even the sun sets in paradise.

I'm at a payphone trying to call home

activity?
Infinitives function as Adjective and
Adverb.
So, what will be our topic for today?

You got it!

3. Discussion
Yesterday, you have learned about the
first function of infinitives which is the noun. Today, An adjective modifies noun or pronoun.
we are going to tackle the other functions of
infinitives, which are the adjective and adverb.
Who wants to state the definition of
It modifies verb, adjective or
adjective?
another adverb.

Very well said!

How about the adverb, what does the
adverb modifies?
To cook, Ma’am.

Excellent!
Take a look at this example. The word “food”, Ma’am.
 I have a food to cook for her birthday.
What is the infinitive in this sentence?

Correct! Noun, Ma’am!

What do you think is being modified by
the infinitive, “to cook” in this sentence?
Adjective, Ma’am!
Exactly!
In what part of speech does the word
“food” belongs?

Very Good!
If that is so, what is the function of the
infinitive, “to cook” in this sentence?

Precisely! To be used, Ma’am.

Infinitives can function as adjective
when it is preceded by a noun. The word ticket, Ma’am.
Just like in this sentence, the infinitive
“to cook” is preceded by the noun “food”.
Another example.
 She offered me a ticket to be
used in the film showing.
What is the infinitive?

And what does it modify? Adjective, Ma’am?

Excellent! Because it modifies the word book,

The infinitive “to remember” modifies which is a noun.
the noun “ticket”. Thus, the infinitive in this
sentence functions as an adjective.
Take a look at this one.
 He gave me a book to read, whenever I Yes, Ma’am!

infinitive to read in this sentence?

How do you say so?

Brilliant!
Can you now give your own example of
a sentence containing infinitives, that functions as
adjective?
To show, Ma’am!

Let us now proceed to another function The verb performed, Ma’am.

of infinitives.
Infinitives that functions as adverb used
to modify verb and predicate adjective. Adverb, Ma’am!
If infinitive modifies verb, it usually explains or tells
why.
Look at this example.
 Protacio performed the role to show his
talent to everyone.
What is the infinitive in this sentence?

Precisely! To listen, Ma’am!

What is being modified by the infinitive,
“to show”? Ready, Ma’am.

Correct!
So, what is the function of the infinitive,
Adjective, Ma’am.
“to show” in this sentence?

Exactly! Adverb, Ma’am!

The infinitive “to show” functions as an
adverb, because it explains why Protacio
performed the role.
Next example.
 The class is ready to listen to the teacher’s
discussion.
What is the infinitive in this sentence? (Students will give their own
examples.)
And what does it modify?
None Ma’am!
Very good!
In what part of speech does the word,
“ready” falls?

If that is so, what is the function of the Adjective and Adverb Ma’am.
infinitive “to listen” in this sentence?

The infinitive “to listen” is an adverb, If it is preceded by a noun.

adverb?

Do you have any further question or

clarification?

4. Generalization

It seems that you have fully understood
our topic for today.
