"MARIE CURIE PLAY"

(First act)
(There are four women on a stage on the left side there is a desk with papers and a
chair, on the right side there is a desk with a computer, in the middle there is a coat
rack and next to a chair)
First daughter of Marie Curie: (she turns her back and turns around) I do not
understand, in the university, in the media and in society they continue to say that
we women can not compare ourselves to men, that neither of us is capable of to
carry out a scientific project, that that belongs to them, which is that they are not
enough with the example of Marie Curie (she says it with an annoyed tone).
Marie Curie: (is looking back and turns) I'm not Marie Curie, hey, my name is Maria
Salomea Sklodowska.
Second daughter: (she is on her back and flips over) My mother had only one
passion, the study of science, she considered lost any minute that was not dedicated
to books.
Third daughter: (she turns her back and flips over) No matter her name, we all know
her as Marie Curie, or did she not marry Pierre Curie? (Pauses) My mother was born
in Warsaw, Poland.
Marie Curie: (responds with an angry tone ) I already told you that Marie is not said,
she says Maria!
Third daughter: (responds stressed) but if you were the one who changed his name
in France!
Marie Curie: I did it so they could pronounce my name well, they could not
pronounce my name or my surname!
Second daughter: She was born on November 7, 1867
First daughter: who would say that that day would be the birth of a woman who
would mark the history of physics?
Marie Curie: it's not that bad! (He says it in a modest tone), I simply fulfilled my task
of contributing something to humanity.
First daughter: Definately you contributed! Not for something they gave you two
Nobel prizes, one for physics and the other for chemistry.
Marie Curie: But to get to that, I had to go through many very unfavorable
circumstances (she says it in a sad way)
(The curtain closes)
(Second act)
Narrator: the 20th century leaves us, it has been a wonderful century for future
times, science has been chosen as the point that man must follow to achieve the
welfare of humanity, science has achieved extraordinary improvements for human
beings , the wonderful penicillin, the invention of the airplane, the cinematograph,
science has the presence of novelties that man could not imagine, what does the
future hold? Only the new generations will know. That is why here at the National
Academy of Sciences of France, the most important scientists met to develop the
research that will return to their nation, the leading country of future research.

(The curtain opens and Marie and Pierre appear in a lab)

Marie Curie: Pierre, I'll see you at the meeting, I'll wait for you in the lab. (Exit scene)
Pierre: (turns around and enters coughing)
Director: (sitting on a table) still with that cough Pierre ?, but of course you're very
sick, after so many years working in that damp and old shed (he says in a mocking
tone).
Pierre: (responds cheerfully) 4 years in that old shed are vacations next to 4 weeks
filling boring reports.
(The director gets up from the table and Pierre approaches, they give each other a
hug in greeting)
Director: Welcome Pierre, (pauses), I made you call, because here in the academy
we are working, for the great challenges that the 20th century has for us and we
have decided to incorporate a new scientist, to the brightest (addresses Pierre ) we
want you to be part of the national academy of sciences.
Pierre: (touches his chin and starts walking worried)
Director: but Pierre, I expected at least a smile.
Pierre: I'm sorry, it's just that I do not think I'm the best person
Director: Pierre (pauses), you are a science scientist, pioneer of magnetism
research, who better than Pierre Curie? (He says doing allegorical Germans)
Pierre: (says it raising his hand) "Marie Curie"
Director: your wife? (says surprised)
Pierre: yes
Scientist 1: (gets up from the table), but Pierre, she is a woman (she says annoyed)
Pierre: my wife mesé is a great scientist, who will change the history of the world
(he says it agitated and happy)
Scientist 2: but Pierre, she is your assistant
Pierre: the truth is that I am his assistant (he says it in secret mode).
Scientist 1: there is no science academy that accepts the participation of a woman,
it would be simply unusual for us to do that.

Pierre: but Mesé, my wife is doing what no other male or female scientist has done
before, if you allow me a few minutes I will show you that no other person is the best
person to occupy this position than Marie Curie.
Director: (gives him the word with a signal)
(All the scientists sit down)
Pierre: to be a member of the national academy of sciences you need to have a
unique guild.
Scientist 2: absolutely (he says it very convinced)
Pierre: well, Marie is a brilliant woman, since she was a little girl in her native Poland.

(A younger Marie Curie appears with a magnifying glass

and a book in hand)

Marie Curie: (she moves from one place to another with curiosity) I've always liked
to know the reason for things, unfortunately in these times, so busy to us women are
not allowed to investigate the world. The Russians have invaded my country, they
do not let us speak, we do not communicate in our language, everything is in
Russian, I am Maria Slodowska, I am the youngest of 5 brothers, we all like to study,
in that we go to our parents, who are teachers , now if you excuse me I must continue
with my Russian lessons, dad says that if I want to go to university and have a PhD
I have no other alternative (leaves the scene).
Pierre: Marie always had a very difficult life when she was 10 years old, her mother
died of tuberculosis, naturally that was a very hard blow for her father.
Scientist 2: Pierre told us a very sad story, but science needs professional merits,
not sad stories.
Pierre: this is not a sad story, her father was a professor of physics and
mathematics, from a very young I teach her in science. When she was 15 years old,
Marie graduated with honors from her school, she made a deal with her sister gloria,
Marie would move to Paris to help her in her doctorate and when it was over, glory
would help her.
