1.0 INTRODUCTION

With the aim to speed up the transportation of the tin miming areas to ports along the
coast in Malaya long time ago, rail transport system has been in operation in our
country since the late 19th century and become most popular mode of transportation
among Malaysian nowadays. Rail transport in Malaysia comprises heavy rail, light
rapid transit, mass rapid transit, monorail, and airport rail link. (Wikipedia,2017)

2.0 CAUSES FOR THE CROWDED TRAINS IN MALAYSIA

2.1 Irregular Schedules of Train Service

A survey by Jade Chan (2008) found that the irregular schedules of the KTM Komuter
train service coupled with huge commuter crowds are surely the bane of many who
depend on the train service for transport.

2.2 Insufficient Number of Trains

Insufficient number of trains also contribute to train overcrowding. The people are
rushing to get home after a long working day, they just try to fit in in the crowded train,
so they can reach home without waiting longer. (The Star Online, 2008).

2.3 Short Coach and Small Cabin

Commuters in Kuala Lumpur faced the most overcrowding because of the size of the
coach. During peak hour, the train must carry more than double their capacity as the
number of people using train to get home will increase. Hundreds of passengers need to
cram into the coach designed for only for groups of passengers. (The Guardian, 2018)

3.0 SOLUTIONS TO EASE THE CROWDED TRAINS IN MALAYSIA

3.1 Reschedule Train Service

BBC News, 2018 suggested timetable changes as it is mean some of the services will be
faster and more frequent, while those that that typically suffer chronic delays will be
deliberately slowed down to make arrival times more realistic.

3.2 Provide More Train

Railways in our country need to be improved to ease the rising number of passengers
during peak hour. The government should extend the route that pass highly populated
areas and provide more trains. (Nandini Balakrishnan, 2006)

3.3 More Carriage on Existing Train

Government needs to provide more trains with more seat, longer platforms and new
services to cut overcrowding. When there is more seat are in the train, the passengers
don’t have to stand and have a comfortable journey. (The Guardian, 2018)

4.0 CONCLUSION

Trains are one of the best ways to explore the places in this country. The good train
network will represent our efficient development and bring a good image of our country
to the global. According to the study by Jade Chan, the irregular schedule of train
service had caused overcrowding of train system in Malaysia. Nandini Balakrishnan in
her writing in Says.com said the insufficient number of trains also caused
overcrowding. The train provided are unable to carry more passengers as it only
consists of short coach that not design to carry more passengers. To ease the problems,
BBC News has suggested train service should be rescheduled. The numbers of train
with longer coach and more seats should be provided to avoid train overcrowding.
