CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION

A carpet is a textile floor covering typically consisting of an upper layer of pile attached to
a backing. The pile was traditionally made from wool, but, since the 20th century, synthetic fibers
such as polypropylene, nylon or polyester are often used, as these fibers are less expensive than
wool. The pile usually consists of twisted tufts which are typically heat-treated to maintain their
structure. The term "carpet" is often used interchangeably with the term "rug", although the term
"carpet" can be applied to a floor covering that covers an entire house, whereas a "rug" is generally
no bigger than a single room, and traditionally does not even span from one wall to another, and
is typically not even attached as part of the floor.

Carpets are used for a variety of purposes, including insulating a person's feet from a cold
tile or concrete floor, making a room more comfortable as a place to sit on the floor (example :
when playing with children or as a prayer rug), reducing sound from walking (particularly in
apartment buildings) and adding decoration or colour to a room. Carpets can be made in any colour
by using differently dyed fibers. Carpets can have many different types of patterns and motifs used
to decorate the surface. In the 2000s, carpets are used in industrial and commercial establishments
such as retail stores and hotels and in private homes. In the 2010s, a huge range of carpets and rugs
are available at many price and quality levels, ranging from inexpensive, synthetic carpets that are
mass-produced in factories and used in commercial buildings to costly hand-knotted wool rugs
which are used in private homes of wealthy families.

10
The comfort or the desire of a user to get maximum comfort is a commonplace of life.
Various systems have been created to satisfy consumers' needs and they have been widely used,
including washing machines, dishwashers and others. From what can be seen, the people in the
city are the ones who spend a lot of money by buying a variety of carpets, but are less sensitive
about their washing method.

Carpets can be produced on a loom quite similar to woven fabric, made using needle felts,
knotted by hand (in oriental rugs), made with their pile injected into a backing material (called
tufting), flatwoven, made by hooking wool or cotton through the meshes of a sturdy fabric or
embroidered. Since the 20th century, where necessary for wall-to-wall carpet, different widths of
carpet can be seamed together with a seaming iron and seam tape (formerly it was sewn together)
and fixed to a floor over a cushioned underlay (pad) using nails, tack strips (known in the UK as
gripper rods), adhesives, or occasionally decorative metal stair rods. Wall-to-wall carpet is
distinguished from rugs or mats, which are loose-laid floor coverings, as wall-to-wall carpet is
fixed to the floor and covers a much larger area.

1.2 PROJECT BACKGROUND

Carpet is a widely used home accessory. Usually carpets are installed in spaces that have
tables and chairs and are used as gathering places such as living room or dining room. Carpets
have many types, including squares, long and round. Carpets of various sizes and shapes make
it difficult for a person to wash it. Carpet is not easy to wash because it is big and heavy.

Carpet is very comfortable to sit on but once it’s dirty, it takes one to have a hard time to
get it clean. For example, a laundry shop who needs to wash more than one carpet by hand, it
uses a lot of energy and waste a lot of time. So, student decided to make a machine that removes
the dust semi automatically. The name of the project that we make is “Carpet Dust Cleaner
Machine”.

11
About the carpet dust cleaner machine, this project is to reduce the energy usage of one to wash
carpets. By using this machine, one can save time and the carpet will be more clean.
1.3 PROBLEM STATEMENT

Based on the problem, student can see that it is hard to remove the dust from the carpet because
it is big moreover it is heavy and make it difficult for one to wash it cleanly. In addition, the
absence of a carpet store makes it difficult for the public to wash the carpet. The laundry service
provides carpet washing facilities but it does not remove the dust from the carpet. Furthermore,
the community is working and does not have time to wash the carpet as it takes a long time.
Therefore, we plan to build a carpet dust cleaner that works better than existing and low-cost
machines.

1.4 PROJECT OBJECTIVE

In this paper, student focus on developing a method to help developers:

i. To create a carpet dust cleaning machine.

ii. More efficient and faster than manually.
iii. Avoid self-exposure to dust.

1.5 PROJECT QUESTION

i. Why should this machine be built?

ii. How this machine can reduce the labor force, and reduce dust pollution?

12
1.6 SCOPE OF PROJECT

The scope or limit of project implementation should be made as a reference to ensure that
each project implementation is not excluded from the objective to achieve the scope of project
implementation based on the objectives or goals of the project. Therefore, the scope of the
carpet dust cleaner machine project is:

i. This project is a prototype due to original size that is 6 feet x 6 feet.

ii. Focus on laundry shop operators
iii. The weight that can be put at one time is about 2kg-5kg.
iv. The maximum carpet size is 3 feet x 2 feet
v. The working process for this machine is tapping face of the carpet where the face of
the carpet is facing down.

1.7 PROJECT INTEREST

i. Save time and energy

ii. Make changes and new techniques to clean a carpet
iii. Times for production decreasing

1.8 CHAPTER SUMMARY

After we carry out this investigation, the first thing that we investigate is the problem occur
between the dust and the carpet, we have seen the laundry services. We found that while
remove dust from carpet manually is major problem and the methods that are not productive
because it uses a lot of energy and wasting time, this method is still an option. Thus, removing

13
dust manually cannot attract customers because the process is not very suitable. In addition,
the next thing is to review the studies which will be described in chapter 2 previous studies.

14
CHAPTER 2

LITERATURE RESEARCH

2.1 INTRODUCTION

Literary studies have been conducted to examine current issues of critical knowledge and
methodological approaches to research topics. Special investigations are secondary sources and
therefore do not report any new experimental work. Student take as many as samples in
consideration for designing our project. Subsequently, we also observed in terms of findings and
any specs related to the project that have investigated

At the preliminary stage of the project, literature review, which is the previous study,
includes the collection of information from sources such as the internet and resources associated
with the tests conducted. Collection of information from literature studies is especially important
as a preliminary study. It also identifies the main issues associated with the study.

This chapter discusses about the concept of comprehensive. Based on the internet,
reference books and observations. The purpose of this discussion is to describe the existing design
and to see how far this project can be implemented. Our group is innovating a project design that
is Carpet Dust Cleaner Machine where we use the dust patching function to remove the dust.

The purpose of this discussion is to describe the methods used in designing the project
model. The use of design-related equipment and components is selected to meet the criteria as a
Diploma in Mechanical Engineering students.

The purpose of the literacy study is to clarify the research that will be conducted based on accurate
information and knowledge about the issues to be studied. In order to realize this project, things
that are taken into account for literacy studies are:

15
2.1.1 TYPE OF MOTOR

2.1.1.1 AC Induction Motors

AC motors typically feature rotors, which consist of a laminated, cylindrical iron core with
slots for receiving the conductors. The most common type of rotor has cast-aluminum conductors
and short-circuiting end rings. This ac motor “squirrel cage” rotates when the moving magnetic
field induces a current in the shorted conductors. The speed at which the ac motor magnetic field
rotates is the synchronous speed of the ac motor and is determined by the number of poles in the
stator and the frequency of the power supply: ns = 120f/p, where ns = synchronous speed, f =
frequency, and p = the number of poles.

Synchronous speed is the absolute upper limit of ac motor speed. If the ac motor’s rotor
turns exactly as fast as the rotating magnetic field, then no lines of force are cut by the rotor
conductors, and torque is zero. When ac motors are running, the rotor always rotates slower than
the magnetic field. The ac motor’s rotor speed is just slow enough to cause the proper amount of
rotor current to flow, so that the resulting torque is sufficient to overcome windage and friction
losses, and drive the load. The speed difference between the ac motor’s rotor and magnetic field,
called slip, is normally referred to as a percentage of synchronous speed: s = 100 (ns – na)/ns,
where s = slip, ns = synchronous speed, and na = actual speed.

16
Figure 2.1 AC Induction Motor

2.1.1.2 Poly phase AC Motors

Poly phase squirrel-cage ac motors, such as 3 phase motors, are basically constant-speed
machines, but some degree of flexibility in operating characteristics results from modifying the
rotor slot design. These variations in ac motors produce changes in torque, current, and full-load
speed. Evolution and standardization have resulted in four fundamental types of ac motors.

Figure 2.2 Squirrel Cage Rotor and Woupd Motor

17
2.1.1.3 AC Motors – Designs A and B

General-purpose ac motors with normal starting torques and currents, and low slip.
Fractional-horsepower polyphase ac motors are generally design B. Because of the drooping
characteristics of design B, a polyphase ac motor that produces the same breakdown (maximum)
torque as a single-phase ac motor cannot attain the same speed-torque point for full-load speed as
single-phase ac motors. Therefore, breakdown torque must be higher (a minimum of 140% of the
breakdown torque of single-phase, general-purpose ac motors) so that full-load speeds are
comparable.

2.1.1.4 AC Motors – Design C

High starting torque with normal starting current and low slip. AC motors are normally
used where breakaway loads are high at starting, but which normally run at rated full load and are
not subject to high overload demands after running speed has been reached.

2.1.1.5 AC Motors – Design D

High slip, ac motor starting torque, low starting current, and low full-load speed. Because
of the high slip, speed can drop when fluctuating loads are encountered. This ac motor design is
subdivided into several groups that vary according to slip or the shape of the speed-torque curve.

2.1.1.6 AC Motors – Design F

Low starting torque, low starting current, and low slip. These AC motors are built to obtain
low locked-rotor current. Both locked-rotor and breakdown torque are low. Normally these ac
motors are used where starting torque is low and where high overloads are not imposed after
running speed is reached.

18
2.1.1.7 Wound-rotor AC Motors
Squirrel-cage ac motors are relatively inflexible with regard to speed and torque
characteristics, but a special wound-rotor ac motor has controllable speed and torque. Application
of wound-rotor ac motors is markedly different from squirrel-cage ac motors because of the
accessibility of the rotor circuit. AC motor performance characteristics are obtained by inserting
different values of resistance in the rotor circuit.

Figure 2.3 Wound Rotor

Wound-rotor ac motors are generally started with secondary resistance in the rotor circuit.
The ac motor resistance is sequentially reduced to permit the motor to come up to speed. Thus, ac
motors can develop substantial torque while limiting locked-rotor current. This secondary ac motor
resistance can be designed for continuous service to dissipate heat produced by continuous
operation at reduced speed, frequent acceleration, or acceleration with a large inertia load. External
resistance gives ac motors a characteristic that results in a large drop in rpm for a fairly small
change in load. Reduced ac motor speed is provided down to about 50% rated speed, but efficiency
is low.

19
2.1.1.8 Multispeed AC Motors
Consequent-pole ac motors are designed for one speed. By physically reconnecting the
leads, a 2:1 speed ratio can be obtained. Typical synchronous speeds for 60-Hz ac motors are:
3,600/1,800 rpm (2/4 pole), 1,800/900 rpm (4/8 pole), and 1,200/600 rpm (6/12 pole).

Two-winding ac motors have two separate windings that can be wound for any number of
poles so that other speed ratios can be obtained. However, ratios greater than 4:1 are impractical
because of ac motor size and weight. Single-phase multispeed ac motors are usually variable-
torque design, but constant-torque and constant-horsepower ac motors are available.

Power output of multispeed ac motors can be proportioned to each different speed. These
ac motors are designed with output horsepower capacity in accordance with one of the following
load characteristics.

Figure 2.4 Variable torque

20
2.1.1.9 AC Motors – Variable torque
AC motors have a speed torque characteristic that varies as the square of the speed. For
example, an 1,800/900-rpm electrical motor that develops 10 hp at 1,800 rpm produces 2.5 hp at
900 rpm. Since ac motors face loads, such as centrifugal pumps, fans, and blowers, have a torque
requirement that varies as the square or cube of the speed, this ac motor characteristic is usually
adequate.

2.1.1.10 AC Motors – Constant torque

These ac motors can develop the same torque at each speed, thus power output varies
directly with speed. For example, an ac motor rated at 10 hp at 1,800 rpm produces 5 hp at 900
rpm. These ac motors are used in applications with constant torque requirements such as mixers,
conveyors, and compressors.

2.1.1.11 AC Motors- Constant horsepower

These ac motors develop the same horsepower at each speed and the torque is inversely
proportional to the speed. Typical applications for ac motors include machine tools such as drills,
lathes, and milling machines.

2.1.1.12 AC Motors – Single-phase AC Motors

Single-phase induction ac electric motors are commonly fractional-horsepower types,
although single-phase integral-horsepower are available in the lower horsepower range. The most
common fractional-horsepower single-phase ac motors are split-phase, capacitor-start, permanent
split-capacitor, and shaded pole.

21
The ac motors come in multispeed types, but there is a practical limit to the number of
speeds obtained. Two, three, and four-speed motors are available, and speed selection may be
accomplished by consequent-pole or two-winding methods.

Single-phase ac electric motors run in the direction in which they are started; and they are
started in a predetermined direction according to the electrical connections or mechanical setting
of the starting means. General-purpose ac motors may be operated in either direction, but the
standard ac motor rotation is counterclockwise when facing the end opposite the drive shaft. AC
motors can be reconnected to reverse the direction of rotation.

Figure 2.5 – Single-phase AC Motors

22
2.2 MATERIAL SELECTION

The selection of materials in industrial application has always been important to product
designers. This is consequence of the fact that the selection of material determines not only the
basic physical characteristics of the product, but also the processing technologies that can be
employed in its manufacture, the specialized properties that can be developed as a function of that
processing and ultimately the cost of the product.

The organized of specific material to meet necessary properties has been given
considerable attention. When what to design a product, there are some factors which should
consider. The consideration needs to give are weigh, strength, cost, durability, environment and
other. A part that is designed for best possible manufacturability with an exact material may give
rise to assembly concern. Give attention to all these factors will help to decrease problems in the
following stages. Strength of the materials selected is also important to prevent failure of the
design.

In order to accomplish the best overall costs which is very important in a competitive
market today, the costs of manufacture and assembly of the product must be considered early. The
product should be durable and aesthetic, given today’s consumer-driven market. Furthermore,
environmental issues in manufacture, governed by political climates must also be dealt with, as
well as problems that may be caused by the environment in which the product will be used.

In this project, there are types of components, part and classification which are electrical,
automations and mechanical standard part and mechanical fabrications part. These materials
selection process is based on how rigid and the functionality of the materials and product.

23
2.2.1 Carpet Dust Cleaner Machine

The material selection for the frame carpet dust cleaner machine is essential as it is used
for the essential part of this product which are carpet dust cleaner machine. Steel and stainless steel
are metal alloys. They are both made from combination of two or more metals in order to obtain
certain desire properties suitable for different functions or uses. Each metal is good for a particular
application because of these properties. Knowing which type of materials, tools, equipment or
appliance is made from is very essential since it can help to determine its suitability in whichever
use. This is a difference between steel and stainless steel. Following table describe the comparison
chart of properties for steel and stainless steel.

3.8 CONCLUSION

As a result of these assemblies and experiments, we find that our final project is functioning
smoothly and regularly. This test also proves that it meets the objective requirements of this carpet
cleaner project. Additionally, this project can also have a positive impact on laundry operators.

After implementing the project's completion methods, it is found that many important
elements or elements should be carried out when doing this project for example a flowchart. Flow
chart is the initial process where it shows from start to finish project revenue. In addition, work
measures should be carried out properly and carefully so that the project's production goes
smoothly. Finally, it is a data recording. The recording of this data should be taken precisely so
that it can be compared more clearly in terms of time and angle between other projects.

Based on this method of production, it can be innovated from a carpet cleaner where it
improves in terms of dust suction. Additionally, the orderly and neat work steps facilitate the
creation of the project and accelerate work in terms of manufacturing time by completing the
anticipated start.

Finally, the method of preparation for this project is expected to assist in project creation
and to produce quality and quality projects. The project hopes to benefit and adapt to today's and
future technological developments.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

5.1 INTRODUCTION

This project was applied from the observations used by manually. The objective of this
project is to design and create a carpet dust cleaning machine focusing on laundry services.
Furthermore, there are few studies that have determined the scope of the project, namely carpet
dust cleaner machine semi-auto function is to clean the carpet from dust. The carpet dust cleaner
machine is a project which will be carried out in order to solve the difficulties in the way of
removing the dust from the carpet. This idea was obtained based on the observation and interview
to the person that runs a laundry service. Therefore, with the help with this project, the process of
removing the dust will be easy by using the machine. The project is hoped to update on the previous
method of removing the dust on a carpet by hand. Apart of that, it will also reduce the cost of
energy and lead to an easier job.

plan and manage time, finance and energy. Thousands of thanks have been given to project
supervisor, Mr Mohamad Norizham Bin Hamzah and lecturers who provide guidance and teaching
us such as how to handle machine, to choose appropriate materials for the project and format to
prepare the project report. Our work procedures are constantly monitored by supervisors in
assisting the project.

5.4 RECOMMENDATION

In creating something, every new creation must have some disadvantages and advantages.
Regardless of any of the created inventions, it cannot be avoided by the weaknesses of the least.
With the lack of the weaknesses in the construction of a project this is what makes us able to
improve efficiency and everything the weakness of a project can be reduced. Some suggestion
have been forwarded for future improvements. Among the suggestions made for the project are as
follows:

i. Install the camera that can record the situation on the machine and keep the user
alert in case of any damage.
