ELECTRICAL MACHINE - I

Course Code: BEL 304 Credit Units: 03

Course Objective:
This course examines the basic theory, characteristics, construction operation and application of rotating
electrical machines. It includes the study of magnets, direct current motors, direct current generators, single-
phase and three-phase transformers.

Course Contents:

MODULE I : MAGNETS & MAGNETISM


Magnetic flux and flux density, Magnetic circuits, Laws governing magnetic circuits, Flux linkage,
Electromagnetic Induction, Statically and Dynamically induced EMF, Magnetization with AC supply, Field
energy and coenergy, Loss of energy during magnetization, Hysteresis and Eddy Current losses, Magnetic
materials, Electromechanical Energy Conversion.

MODULE II : DC GENERATORS
Construction and components of DC Machine, Principle of operation, Lap and wave windings, EMF equations,
Circuit model, Armature reaction, Methods of excitation, Commutation and interpoles, Compensating winding,
Characteristics of DC generators.

MODULE III : DC MOTORS


Principle and operations, Types of DC Motors, Speed Torque Characteristics of DC Motors, Starting and speed
control of DC motors, Plugging, dynamic and regenerative braking, Testing and efficiency, Retardation test,
Swinburne’s test and Hopkinson’s test, Permanent magnet dc motors (PMDC), DC Motor applications.

MODULE IV : TRANSFORMERS
Construction, Principle of operation, Equivalent circuit parameters, Phasor diagrams, Losses, Testing,
Efficiency and Voltage Regulation, All day Efficiency, Sumpner’s test, Polarity test, Three-phase transformers
connections, Scott connection, Parallel operation of three phase transformers, Auto-transformer, Instrument
transformer, Tap-changing transformers.
