Some people believe that a person's intelligence is inherited from the parents, while others

believe that their environment is the main factor. Discuss these views. Which factor do you
think is mostly responsible for intelligence?

There are the different agreements between some people and others in which main factors,
heritability or environment, would be responsible for human’s intelligence. This essay will
debate both points of view with some plausible reason and most significant factor that I
prefer to conclude.
On the one hand, supporters of parental intelligence highlight that people who are brilliant
tend to have intelligent offspring. Since research has discovered that most of cognitive
abilities depend on the X-chromosome which belongs to mother as twice as those in father,
so this gene that has inherited from parents will provide instruction to construct brain and
nervous system to influence offspring intelligence. Moreover, it might be said that mother
plays a big role in the fetus adaptation during pregnancy. For example, if intelligent mother
previously spent time on reading books as her leisure activity, without any negative sense,
she thus would probably enhance to introduce academic cognition with a sense of pleasure
to their children.
On the other hand, supporters of environmental factors would emphasize that where
individuals live is also a significant influence to their intelligence. For instance, people living
in the city would normally have more problem-solving abilities and social cognition
compared to those in village. This is because they have to frequently deal with many
complex problems in the city, such as traffic congestion, over pollution, communicate
successfully with multicultural society. Furthermore, it is often said that quality and quantity
of learning in the school, as a part of individual’s environment, would also encourage young
persons to gain cognitive abilities. This is possible since comprehensive learning, method in
the school to master relation among distinct subjects, has assisted students to possess
multi-ability to face dynamic situation.
In conclusion, I am certain that intelligent persons are mostly influenced by their
environment especially parental education, meaning that offspring’s intelligence is
dependent on how parents communicate with and nurture the children rather than
inheritance.

The ideas of person's intelligence, whether it is from the parents or the environment
continues to be widely debated. There are valid opinions on both sides, which I will explain
below.
On the one hand, those who support parental inheritance claim that people who skilled in
music, undoubtedly, mostly come from musicians' family. Scientifically, children's' cognitive
is affected by genes of parents especially from mothers, where if the mothers are expert in
music, the children would be probably inherited. For example, Bruno Mars, an international
singer who was born from a singer mother. Furthermore, it might be said that appropriate
manner of mother during pregnancy until postpartum treatment could bring a positive
effect on children's brain development.
On the other hand, the opponents of parental inheritance are able to cite evidence from
environment where genes of parents have apparently not influenced person's intelligence.
The intellectual could grow when children involved in formal schooling. In the societies, it is
believed, Attending school early and regularly might enhance cognitive abilities. This is
because school activity plays an important role in boosting brain power and memory.
Moreover, consuming a toxic substance is a part of environmental factor, where has a
significant effect on the decline of cognitive function. The poisonous substance for instance,
alcohol and drugs affect neurological development and thus affect person's IQ.
Overall, I would tend to side with the opponents of parental inheritance. Although parents
inherit the intelligence to their children, The environmental factor still dominates highest.

Some people think that intelligence is innate while others think that we can improve our
intelligence through learning. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

Model Answer:

One of the highly controversial issues today relates to that of intelligence. While some people
believe that intelligence is inherited, some others feel that intelligence can be acquired
through learning. In this essay, I would shed some light on both these views and then give my
opinion on the matter.

On the one hand, intelligence is certainly innate. The main reason is that if parents are
intelligent, children acquire the genes which lead to higher level of intelligence in children.
For example, the IQ level of Mr. Trump, the president of the America is very high. Similarly,
his son also has a shockingly high level of IQ. Thus, it can be seen how intelligence can be
acquired as a parental gift.

Although intelligence is innate, it does not mean that intelligence is cannot be gained. If a
person has passion and a pure desire he/she can achieve whatever they want including
intelligence, hard work, dedication, and learning are what helps people acquire intelligence.
For example, a bright student can accomplish a task very fast. However, a dull student can
put in more hours of learning to accomplish the same task in the same time. Therefore, it
goes without saying that this viewpoint is credible and realistic.

Intelligence has a great role in every aspect of life. Smartness is very important. This essay
discussed why intelligence is inherited, but why intelligence can definitely be improved or
acquire through effort and learning. In my opinion, intelligence can be improved, smartness
can be gained through motivation and learning.
