CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

An ideal family is living happily and peacefully together in one home where the

parents are giving all the love, care, attention and all the needs of their children. Necessities

like food, clothing, a house to live in, and education to be able to have their children a better

future and a quality life are some of the needs that must be fulfilled. But this is not true to all

family. The main reason for that is because of poverty. Poverty is a big hindrance to have a

quality life and because of that parents choose to be separated from their children and work

abroad to provide their needs. The only way that they can escape crushing poverty and

unemployment to provide the needs of their family is to be an Overseas Filipino Worker

(Reyes, 2008).

According to Reyes (2008), with this huge number of Filipino migrants leaving the

country temporarily, more pressing concern is regarding children being left behind remained

unnoticed. In terms of investments in education, the earned money by migrant parents increase

the levels of educational attainments among their children, opening more opportunities for

their future. Moreover, having Overseas Filipino Worker parents can have a huge impact on

the children’s life. It can either be positive effect or it will lead to emotional imbalance that

will affect their future. In some cases, they can lead to peer pressure, smoking, drug use, pre-

marital sex, cutting classes, pregnancy, etc. Therefore, it is really important for the children to

acquire deeper knowledge about its effects so that they can obtain a good coping mechanism

and avoid ruining their lives.

According to Campo 2014, children of OFW’s encountered a problem of truancy,

bullying (either as the victim of the bully), academic performance and other behavioral

concerns

CHAPTER 2

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presented the methods to be used by the researchers. This chapter

discussed the research design, research locale, research respondents, research instrument, data

gathering procedure, and data analysis.

Research Design

This study used the descriptive research design in order to determine the problems and

coping mechanisms of senior high school students with absentee parents. Descriptive research

is the collection of data that seeks to describe characteristics of a population or phenomenon

being studied (Joy, 2016). This means that descriptive research gathers quantifiable

information that can be used for statistical inference in your target audience through data

analysis. The most common descriptive research method is the survey, which includes

questionnaires and personal interviews (Calderon, 2014).

Research Respondents

The respondents of our study were the senior high school students whose parents are

Overseas Filipino Workers. There were 43 respondents who volunteered to participate in the

study and answered the questionnaire. In order to get the target participants, the researchers

used Purposive Random Sampling which is a non-probability sample that is selected based on

characteristics of a population and the objective of the study. Purposive sampling is also

known as judgmental, selective, or subjective sampling. This type of sampling can be very
useful in situations when you need to reach a targeted sample quickly by picking the target

participants with purpose, and where sampling for proportionality is not the main concern

(Crossman, 2017).

CHAPTER 3

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter, the results are presented, analyzed, and interpreted. Presentation of the

results and their corresponding interpretations and discussions are arranged according to the

order of the research questions stipulated in Chapter 1.

Research Question # 1: What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of

Sex, Age, and Grade?

Table 1. Profile of the respondents according to sex, age and grade level.

Demographic Profile Frequency Percentage

Male 13 30.23 %
Sex Female 30 69.77 %
Total 43 100 %
15 years old 1 2.33 %

16 years old 19 44.19 %

Age
17 years old 20 46.51 %

18 years old 3 6.98 %

19 years above 0 0

Total 43 100 %

11 27 62.79 %
Grade Level
12 16 37.21 %
Total 43 100 %
As shown in the table 1, there are 13 or 30.23 % male and 30 or 69.77 % female from

a total of 43 respondents. The data shows that there are more female respondents with an

absentee parents in the Senior for school year 2018-2019.

CHAPTER 4

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter contained the conclusion of the study based on the findings and the

generated recommendations of this study.

CONCLUSIONS

It was found out that majority of the respondents that have an absentee parent were 17

years old female and from the Grade 11. It was also discovered that emotional as one of the

factor of the problem experienced by the students with absentee parents has the highest mean

among the three given factors and behavioral problem has the lowest mean. In addition, the

students have their coping mechanisms in order to cope up with their problems especially in

emotional that has the greatest mean among the three given factor, and in the coping

mechanisms identified to spend their time with their friends has the highest mean. Likewise,

the coping mechanisms of academic has the lowest mean and to listen attentively to the class

has the highest mean among the coping mechanisms presented in terms of academic.

RECOMMENDATIONS
The following are recommendations given by the researcher to help the parents,

students, teachers, and readers to understand, cope with and adjust to the situation of a person

experiencing this kind of situation.

To the Parents, that they may spare quality time with their children and when they

have a break in their work or at least set a schedule in communicating their children via

technological product such as cellphones and other social media apps. Moreover, help them to

understand why they have to go abroad, that they should ask each other of how their days

went. Parents
