MacDonald (1997) presents this diagram explaining the oral language development.
Oral Language, the complex system that relates sounds to meaning, is made up of
three component; the Phonological, semantic, and syntactic (Lindfors, 1987).
Phonological components, involves the rules for combining sounds.
Semantics the study of meaning.
Morphological component is made up of morphemes, the smallest units of
meaning that may be combined with each other to make up words (for
example , “paper” + “s” are the two morphemes that make up “papers”), and
sentences (Brown, 1973).
Syntactic components, consists of the rules that enable us to combine
morphemes into sentences.
Pragmatics deals with rules of language use. Pragmatic rules are
part of our communicative competence, our ability to speak appropriately in
different situations.
Teaching Speaking
The goal of teaching speaking skills is communicative competence. Learners should be
able to make themselves understood by others.
Experts suggest balanced activities of these three domains as instructors teach
speaking.
1. Language input comes in the form of teacher talk, listening activities, reading
passages, and the language heard and read outside of class. It gives learners
the material they need to begin producing language themselves.
