Australia
– a great place to be
When people think of Australia, they often picture beautiful
beaches, lovely weather, and lots of dangerous animals
– such as salt water crocodiles and taipan snakes! It’s true
that we have these things, but Australia is more interesting
than you might think.
Australia is in the South Pacific and it’s the world’s biggest
island. We don’t have any borders with other countries and
our closest neighbours are Papua New Guinea and East
Timor. Australia is the sixth largest country in the world. It’s
thirty times bigger than the United Kingdom, but nearly
three times more people live in the UK. In the centre of the
country there is a lot of desert. Most Australians live near
the coast, where the country’s biggest cities are.
There are plenty of exciting cities to visit here, including
Canberra, our capital, and Sydney, which is famous for its
Opera House and amazing harbour. However, it is Melbourne
which is near the top of the list of the ‘most exciting cities
of the world’. It has wonderful beaches, a great nightlife,
fantastic shops, and lots of arts festivals and exhibitions.
Australia is a fascinating place to visit. We’re very proud of
our country and we usually welcome tourists. Our way of
life isn’t very formal, but we often take presents when we
visit people. If someone invites you to dinner, it’s a good
idea to take along flowers or wine for your host.
2 Read the text again and answer the questions.
The good weather means we can do lots of outdoor
activities. Summer lasts from December to February, and
winter from June to August. However, Australia is
enormous and the weather isn’t the same everywhere. The
north has two types of weather – very wet and very dry!
The centre stays dry all year round. But in the south, the
weather changes from season to season. Summer in the
south is hot, but winter can be cold, wet, and windy – you
can even go skiing in the mountains!

Listening 1
Interviewer Excuse me. I’m doing a survey about people’s
holidays. Can I ask you and your husband a few
questions?
June Yes, of course.
Interviewer First of all, can you tell me your names?
June I’m June Smith and this is my husband,
Thomas.
Interviewer And are you from Bristol?
Thomas No, we’re from Bolton. We’re visiting our
daughter – she’s at university here.
Interviewer Can you tell me about your last holiday?
Thomas We had a week in Bridlington, on the east
coast. It was really nice and we had sunny
weather all week. There are lots of interesting
things to do there – we had some nice walks
and visited the museum and art gallery. It
wasn’t expensive either. And the holiday
apartment was very comfortable – great views
of the sea from our bedroom window.
June Well, I didn’t enjoy it. It was cheap and the
weather was nice, but Bridlington wasn’t very
exciting. It was very quiet in the evening and
there was nothing to do. It was sunny, but I
couldn’t sunbathe or swim in the sea. I like hot
countries and I like to go dancing in the
evening. And it’s better to stay in a hotel. I
don’t want to cook or make beds when I’m on
holiday!
Interviewer So, where are you going to go for your next
holiday?
June Well, I want to go somewhere exciting. Maybe
New York. I can go shopping during the day
and Thomas can visit some of the museums.
Then, in the evening we can do some
sightseeing and visit some of New York’s
restaurants and nightclubs.
Thomas No, thanks! I don’t like big cities and
sightseeing is boring. I prefer to find places
that are quiet and relaxing. I’m going to buy a
new mountain bike and travel round the coast
of Ireland.

Presenter There’s only ten minutes to go until the end of the
match and the score is 2–1. Leeds are definitely
the better team today and they look very strong.
Manchester City aren’t playing very well. They
scored the first goal, but they look quite tired now.
I don’t think they’re going to get another goal
before the end of the game.

Presenter 1 Now it’s over to Jonathan Hodge for the weather.
Jonathan, the weather is really bad at the moment.
Is it going to be better later on in the week?
Presenter 2 You’re right, Tricia. The weather isn’t very nice.
It’s snowing all over the country at the moment,
and it’s very cold. The average temperature is only
two degrees. That’s six degrees lower than it
usually is at this time of the year. The snow isn’t
going to stop and temperatures aren’t going to get
higher.

Paul Rosie?
Rosie In the living room, Paul!
Paul Hi. What are you doing?
Rosie I’m moving all the furniture into the bedroom. I don’t
want to get paint on anything.
Paul That armchair looks heavy. Let me help you.

Sara Be quiet! I’m trying to work.
Dom But me and Jake are practising. We’re going to enter
the school music competition next week.
Sara There are lots of really good musicians in the
competition. You can’t sing, and everyone is going to
laugh at you!

Woman Who’s the best person for the job, Jim Brown or
Terry Webb?
Man Jim has more work experience, but he can’t speak
German. Terry’s German is very good – he went to
university in Berlin, but he doesn’t have any
experience.
Woman Well, most of our customers are German, so we need
someone who can speak to them in their language.
That’s more important.
Man OK, I’ll phone them both this afternoon.
