questa sua dichiarazione il sentimento di tutti gli uomini nei riguardi di quello che è accaduto e che sta ancora
accadendo a Città del Messico. Di contro le ciniche assicurazioni del vice-presidente del Comitato olimpico
internazionale, il generale messicano Jose Jesus Clark Flores, a far eco alla sprezzante indifferenza del
miliardario americano Avery Brundage: "Soltanto un cataclisma provocherà la sospensione dei giochi. Ed è tutto

I giochi olimpici non possono valere una vita umana. Tanto meno questi che si vuole e tutti i costi far svolgere a
Città del Messico, a dispetto delle proteste di una popolazione cui, in risposta alle richieste di libertà e umane
condizioni di vita, sono stati gettati in faccia gli sprechi provocati dalla costruzione dei costosi impianti olimpici (i
più belli del mondo, si dichiara con orgoglio), i pro grammi turistici destinati ai miliardari yankee, e gli slogan tipo
"L'Olimpiade del Messico vi offre qualche cosa di pitt ripresi pari pari dalla pubblicità dei prodotti com merciali. Ma
a questo punto occorrerà domandarsi che cosa sono e che significato hanno questi giochi olimpici, per salvare i

strumento di speculazione commerciale, politica ed affaristica. Se cosi non fosse il Comitato olimpico
internazionale non avrebbe accettato la proposta del gruppi dirigenti messicani, i quali hanno inteso la XIX
Olimpiade come un solido piedistallo per rafforzare il loro prestigio e un pretesto per sviare l'opinione pubblica e
la popolazione messicana dall'esame dei gravi complessi problemi che travagliano il grande Paese latino -
americano problemi neppure affrontati per grane colpa degli stessi gruppi dirigenti. E se cost non fosse il CIO
aurebbe considerato con maggiore realismo le possibili conseguenze di ga re olimpiche che si dovrebbero
svolgere ad oltre duemila metri di quota e chiesto maggiori garanzie nei riguardi di un'organizzazione che ha già
manifestato ampiamente le sue carenze.

Ma il CIO ritiene di essere investito di ben altri compiti e, per mezzo dei suoi rappresentanti, interpreta suo modo
il messaggio olimpico. Popola le sue file di generali, di nobili e di ex regnanti e difende ottusamente il concetto di
un dilettantismo in nome del quale la qualifica di e sportivo continua ad essere concessa solo agli sfaccendati.
Nel nome di una presunta difesa dello sport dalle ingerenze politiche, finge di ignorate le discriminazioni razziali e
vorrebbe che gli Gtleti vivessero in un cerchio ovattato o in un tempio dove adorare gli idoli del record.

I risultati di un conservatorismo cosi gretto sono, purtroppo, nel sangue delle innocenti vittime di Città del
Messico. Ma c'è qualche cosa di molto importante che riscatta questa situazione: c'è la protesta dei giovani come
Eddy Ottoz, degli sportivi anche essi studenti, operai e contadini come i loro fatelli messicani e di tutto il mondo,
che rifiutano l'annullamento della loro personalità; non automi ma uomini. Se questa protesta sarà in grado di
impedire che si svolge una manifestazione che ormai è lontana parente dell'Olimpiade, non sappiamo: sappiamo,
comunque, che essa non potrà mai essere soffocata perchè è piil forte di qualsiasi repressione.
