 History
• 1986 Reinhard Löwenstein assumed 50% of the shares in
Heinen GmbH Meckenheim from Mr. Felix F. Marx
whose company had gained already a good name in
neonatologies. Under the new co-operate management, the
company became an exclusive partner to AirShields, Bear
and Healthdyne selling products such as incubators, thermal
beds, child ventilators and SIDS monitors thus remaining a
specialist for neonatologies.

• 1989 Development and manufacture of the first

Heinen + Löwenstein anaesthesia unit, the
Modumat Anaesthesia Workstation.

• 1991 Reinhard Löwenstein assumed the remaining shares

from Mr. Felix F. Marx becoming thus the General
Manager.

• 1992 Development and manufacture of the second Heinen +

Löwenstein anaesthesia unit, the Tizian Anaesthesia
Workstation.

Workstation. And the Sinus TR as a standard cicuit

• 2002 Extension of the Heinen + Löwenstein development

• 2005 Completion and manufacture of the Heinen +

Löwenstein anaesthesia unit Leon plus.

• 2006 Extension of the range of self-manufactured products

by the anaesthesia unit Leon.

Concept Ventilation Modes

1. Man. / Spont. (Manuel / Spontaneous Mode)

The Manual / Spontaneous Mode is devided in two functions, the

Manual Function, as the patient is ventilated by using the APL –
valve for adjusting the ventilation pressure and within the
handbag comprimation, the patient is manually ventilated.

The second function is Spontaneous, the patient is able to use

the flow (coming from freshgas settings) to breath
spontaneously on an adjustable CPAP level. Also the Mode can
be used for induction to preoxygenate the patient with mask.

2. IMV (Intermittend mandatory Ventilation)

The IMV Mode is the Volume controlled Mode. The selected VT is

delivered by a constant flow in a defined frequency and time.
The pressure is limited with the function of Pmax, to prevent
from too high pressures.
The inspriation increasing time is driven by the Plateau
adjustement in percentage. The reached plateau is creating the
zero flow phase.
Range: VT (3*) 20 – 1600 ml *Neonatal Option

Frequency 4 – 80 (100*) bpm

4. PCV (Pressure controlled Ventilation)

The PCV mode is working as a time and pressure controlled

ventilation. Also here the adjustement of the inspiration
increasing time is done with the selection of the plateau in
percentage.

Range: Pinsp. 5 – 60 cm H2O

PEEP 0 – 20 cm H2O
Plateau 10 – 90%

5. PCV / VTG (Pressure controlled Volume targeted Ventilation)

This Mode is a combination between Pressure controle and

Volume Targeting. This function combines the advantage of
pressure controle as a higher volume on a lower pressure level,
with the advantage of a volume constant ventilation. In
activating this function by setting a tidalvolume, the parameter
Pinsp is switching to the parameter PMax automatically.

The SPCV Mode is working as the PCV mode within the

7. PSV (Pressure supported Ventilation)

Psv provides pressure support during insufficient

spontaneous breathing.
If the Leon plus is not triggered by the patient after
the adjustable apnoe time (backup), the Leon plus
initiates the inspiration.
In addition, you can use a button to start a manual
breath, not activated by the patient.
Every breath (triggered, backup, manual) is flow
cycled

8. HLM (Heart – Lung – Machine Mode)

This Mode is working on a CPAP Level.

It is displaying a direct measurement of CPAP.
It is without „standard“ patient alarms,
Because this mode is for dedicated use on
„Bypass“, as the patient is on Heart lung
machine oxygenated.

The adjustement of CPAP is on APL – Valve

and this CPAP Level is also observated with
an alarm.
