GRAPHIC STANDARDS FOR PERSONS WITH

DISABILITIES (PWD)

General Access
All building entrances to be used by PWD should be approached by paved walks, with a non-
skid surface. Landing platforms at all building entrances should be level sloped only as
required for drainage

Ramps
Standard Ramp Slope: 5(%) percent or less

Steeper ramps limit independent wheelchair use and should never be used. They are
hazardous not only to wheelchair users but also to people with artificial limbs and to elderly
people.

Ramps Should be:


 Fireproof
 Nonslip
 Handrails for children should be at least 0.60
 Handrails for PWD should be 0.70 m – 0.90 m
For Two Ramps

- Ramps should be no longer than 6 m separated by a level platform at least 1.60 m long.
- 90 – or 180 – degree turn at platform
- Descent should be broken by turns to be negotiated on level platform.

For One- way ramps

- Witdh: 0.9 m between handrails, 1.8 m for a two-way circulation


- Handrails and anchors should extend at least 0.45 m (0.60 m preferable) beyond the
beginning and end of the ramp to assist persons with poor vision and they should be
returned to a wall or an upright post for safety.
PARKING
- The Parking areas should be moderately sized and conveniently located to provide easy
and safe access to entrances.
- Minimum Width of Parking Bays for Wheelchair users: 3.66 m desirable.
- Min. width of parking bays for orthopaedic equipment users: 2.74 m
- Parking areas shall be provided with sufficient space for the disabled persons to allow
easy transfer from car park to ingress/egress levels.

SECTION 1. Short Title. - This Act shall be known as the "Disabled Persons' Parking

8 Places Act."

SECTION 2. Parking Spaces For Persons With A Disability - Marking, Signing, and Enforcement.

- Local governments and owners of private property open to public use shall designate
parking zones and spaces to be used exclusively by disabled persons' vehicles.

- All accessible parking spaces shall be located near the shortest route to curb cuts and
ramps for use by wheelchairs and other mechanical device usage mobility aids and
devices.

SECTION 3. - Prohibition on Parking. - It is unlawful:

a) For any person to park or stand any vehicle in any stall or space designated or reserved for
physically disabled persons.

b) For any person to obstruct, block, or otherwise bar access to those parking stalls or spaces.

Any vehicle operator who is not physically disabled shall not use the handicapped parking space
unless there is a physically disabled person in the vehicle, or while the vehicle is being used to
transport a physically disabled person.

FOR PARKING:

 There should be 1 accessible parking slot per 50 parking lots reserved for Persons with
Disabilities.
