Explain the relationship of Literature and society

 Literature’s main subject mostly focuses on the current issues that a certain society

is facing at that moment. For example, Dr. Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere where

this book talks about the unfairness of the Spanish priest and the ruling of the

government at that time.

 Literature depicts the culture and tradition of a certain society. For example, the

epic poem of the Ilocano people “Biag ni Lam-ang” this poem portrays the love of

Ilocano to their families. Also, it shows that Filipino in the past believed in

extraordinary beings especially when Lam-ang begins to speak in his early years,

thus enabling him to choose his own name and his magical resurrection. The

traditional courtship also portrays in this poem.

 Literature tells about our history, it records the past happenings that serves as an

instrument to understand the present society. Since literature in the past mostly

talks about the challenges of the society it could give us deeper understanding

about what happened during those moments.

 Literature is an instrument to make society realize its mistake and make amends.

For example, Rizal use his works to awaken the Filipino’s patriotic spirit to fight

for their own freedom and independence against the Spanish colonization.
 Literature is an imitation of human actions, a picture of what people thinks about

the society. For example, Bob Ong’s ABNKKBSNPLAKo? Where he make use

of conversational Filipino language as he narrates stories in humorous way while

depicting the real life siyuations in Philippine context.

 Literature also used to persuade the society to what they should believe or not.
