The importance of developing global

competences
Global competence is the ability to examine local, global and intercultural issues; as well as
to understand and appreciate the perspectives and points of view of the world and of others.
Young people have increased their trips significantly in the last decade. In fact, 57% of
students in Latin America between 13 and 18 have sought experiences abroad, with the
main motivation to explore cultures beyond academic progress.

This is not a question asked by AFS Intercultural Programs, a non-profit organization that
promotes intercultural learning opportunities.
The transformation of students into "citizens of the world" promotes the development of
intercultural skills.
These trips accompanied by an intercultural learning process allow students to develop a
skill called global competence and active citizenship.
To analyze what the development of this type of skills represents, AFS Colombia, which is
celebrating 60 years of operations, recently carried out, with the support of Semana
Educación, the forum 'Education: intercultural learning and global citizenship'.

According to the agency, the transformation of students into global citizens allows them to
take an active role in their community to seek a more egalitarian world, responding to the
needs of universities and jobs in the world today.
The event was attended by Michael Vande Berg, education expert; Paula Andrea Henao,
director of international relations at Icetex; Antonio Roveda, director of Aura Creative of
Unab; Daniel Obst, world president of AFS, and Andrea Escobar, director of Education
Week.

The meeting served to analyze and promote education in global citizenship, as a

fundamental axis for the development of essential skills for a more connected world,
peaceful, sustainable and respectful of cultural differences.

"Not necessarily having an international experience makes you a global citizen, it requires
a series of key competences, as well as bearing in mind the importance of teacher training
in interculturalism and the accompaniment of students"
