IRWIN trabaja de una manera compleja y sutil con conexiones entre arte e ideología. Su trabajo reúne
referencias históricas del arte, como el romanticismo, el modernismo o el suprematismo de Malevich,
con símbolos tomados de la religión o los sistemas políticos totalitarios, por ejemplo, de la era nazi o del
realismo social soviético. IRWIN ha construido con el tiempo un complejo sistema de referencias cruza-
das entre sus obras y las obras de otros artistas. El punto de partida para IRWIN es que los diferentes
símbolos tienen diferentes significados según el lugar y el tiempo. Para examinar y descubrir el significa-
do y la función de un símbolo, IRWIN comienza a trabajar de acuerdo con un método o proceso que ellos
mismos han desarrollado, el principio retro. Este método significa que, para comprender el significado y
la función de un símbolo, se necesita investigar su origen. Una reconstrucción del significado del símbolo
implica que el significado del símbolo se cambia retrospectivamente a través del hecho de que IRWIN
yuxtapone y se apropia de los símbolos en nuevos contextos. Irwin también es cofundador de NSK en
1984.
