Groundwater recharge method

1. Natural recharge 2. Artificial recharge

Borewell recharge

6
Borewell recharge
• Artificial grounwater
recharge.

•A recharging pit allow the

rainwater to replinsh
groundwater by recharging
the underground aquifier’s.

•To increase infiltration.

7
 Introduction
 Scientific method of borewell recharge
technique was first intiated by Zillah
Panchayath of Chikkamagalur Dist. in
Karnataka.

 Sankalpa Rural Development of Society by

Sikandar in Hubli (2008), was promoting
rainwater harvesting techniqe through direct
borewell recharge.

 Cost of recharging each borewell through

rainwater techniqe is 20,000 to 30,000 Rs.

Materials used Thickness of Diameter of
the layer(cm) materials(cm)
Boulders 30 30-40
Large stones 30 15-20
Small stones 90 7.5
Gravel 90 2-4
Wood charcoal 30
Sand 30 0.2
Nylon net 50-70% permeable

 Runoff water from the cultivated area enter into
primary filter unit.

 Secondary filter unit consists of dug out of the

soil around the borewell Casing pipe by 2.5m
depth.

 From the bottom ,up to 50cm height, small holes

(4-6mm) are made on the pipe with pointer and
pipe is covered with mesh.

10
 4layers of stones are filled
1st layer-Boulders(30-40cm)
2nd layer-Large stones(15-20cm)
3rd layer-small stones(7.5cm)
4th layer-gravel(2-4cm)

 Nylon net is covered

 Fill the pit with Wood Charcoal and Sand.

 Protection wall is built.

1.Direct method

2
 Where groundwater level are declining due to over
exploitation.

 Water from the borewells slow down after some

water has been drawn.

 Feed the selected borewell with 4000lts of water.

 Fill to the top

 Observe for 10-15mins for fall in water level

 Continuing feeding.

2.Indirect method

15
• Dig the pit upto 3m around the bore

 Local materials are used for filters

 Improves the water quality

 Quick recharge

 Evaporational loss is minimized

 Cost effective

 Eco friendly.

28
 The ground water recharge in treated borewell
was found to be 23.8% of annual rainfall against
5.56% in untreated borewells .

 Effeciency of the designed filters was found to be

93% to 96%

 Maximum infiltration efficiency was absorved in

recharged borewells .

 Borewell recharge techniques adopted in

Karnataka ,Maharashtra, Andra pradesh.
