TITLE: BIOLOGY – (MONSTER GENETICS LABORATORY)

SITUATION:
The University of the Philippines (UP) – Diliman had just recently erected the countrys’
first Genome Center. With the availability of some advent technologies a collaborative project was
proposed known as Project: MONSTER LAB, which aims to create and study genetically modified
organisms (GMO) for biomedical and pharmaceutical purposes. You’re task is to create a new kind of
organism out from varied genetic traits of some living species found in the country and breed this kind of
organism.
Below are traits of some endemic species of living organisms found in the Philippines. Please
be guided accordingly in answering the following items below.

GENETIC TRAITS
Traits Allele 1 (Dominant) Allele 2 (Recessive)
A. EYE Two small eyes (E) Two large eyes (e)
B. EYE COLOR Red (R) White (R’)
C. SKIN COLOR Green (G) Blue (B)
D.TAIL SHAPE Curly (C) Straight (c)
E. TAIL COLOR Purple (P) Orange (p)
F. TEETH Sharp (S) Round (s)
G. HORN COLOR Purple (W) White (w)
H. HORN SIZE Short (SH) Long (‘SH’)
I. EAR SHAPE Pointy (Y) Round (y)
J. CLAWS Long (L) Short (l)

1. TABLE 1. Fill in the genetic information in the table for MALE and FEMALE MONSTERS.

TRAITS MALE FEMALE

Genotype Phenotype Genotype Phenotype
A. EYE ee Two small eyes
B. EYE COLOR Red RR’
C. SKIN COLOR GB BB
D.TAIL SHAPE Straight Curly
E. TAIL COLOR Pp pP
F. TEETH Ss SS
G. HORN COLOR White wW
H. HORN SIZE ‘SH’’SH’ Long
I. EAR SHAPE Pointy Pointy
J. CLAWS Ll lL

2. Draw on the space provided the Male Organism and Female Organism upon completing
their Phenotypic Traits.

3. Create Punnett squares (attach your work to this handout) to predict what traits
would result from a cross between the two monsters for each trait, and answer the
following questions:

a. Eyes – What percent of offspring will have two large eyes? _________

b. Eye Color – What percent of offspring will have red eyes? _________

c. Horn Color – What percent of offspring will have purple horns? _________

d. Ear Shape – What percent of offspring will have round ears? _________

e. Claws – What percent of offspring will have long claws? _________

A. B.
C. D.

E.

4. Illustrate the Mendelian Laws associated to task number 1 and 3 in a Conceptual Map. Then
explain the concepts drawn in 3 – 5 sentences only on the space provide below.
ESSAY. Explain accurately the relative concept and write your idea(s) legibly in 3 - 5 sentences
only in the space provide below.
Rubrics: 3 Detailed processes are reflected, terms used are accurate and no
misconceptions are indicated.
2 Detailed processes are reflected, no misconceptions are indicated
and there are terms used that are inaccurate.
1 Processes reflected are not detailed, there are minor
misconceptions and some terms are inaccurate.

ACTIVITY: ROSE ARRAY
TIME FRAME: 15 MINUTES
INSTRUCTION: Please read the instructions carefully. Don’t hesitate to ask help from the
facilitator.
1. From the given set of Roses identify a father (male) and mother (female) flower.
2. List down the all noticeable traits both the flowers such as their similarities and differences.
3. The remaining flowers will represent their offspring. List down identified traits that are found
from both parents.
4. Discuss among yourselves your findings and create a Frequency Table from the identified
traits.
5. Show your output by selecting 2 representatives to present in the class.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS:
1. What do you feel about the task?
2. How did you find the task based from your previous knowledge?
3. How did you resolve varied ideas from each member of the group?
4. How did the task impact you as a student and member of the society?
