TOOL BOX TALK EFFECTIVENESS

Introduction

Tool box talk is a short presentation,

delivered on site by project TPE to
the workforce (Team), to highlight a
particular hazards and safety
concern. Tool box talk may also be
referred to as a safety briefing about
the particular work which is being
carried out on that day. It includes
type of activity, hazards identified on site and control measures applied,
emergency rescue plan, first aid, etc. To be effective, tool box talks should be
held regularly before starting the work. To improve the competency of TBT
conductor (TPE/Supervisor), we have to conduct the TBT in such a way that
TPE/Supervisor should cover all the topics, workforce wants to feel that they
are working in safe environment. Then & then only we will achieve “GOAL
ZERO”.

Purpose

The purpose of Tool Box Talk should be to keep health and safety as priority to
our workforce, and to provide safe environment at site or MGL premises. This
is an excellent method of gaining feedback from our workforce, and getting
workers to feel involved in their safety. Frontline staff can also suggest safety
suggestion as they are working in this field from so many years. While doing
this activity, competency of frontline staff will also improve. It can have a
positive impact on compliance to the health and safety measures in place and
to reducing carelessness and accidents on sites. Feedback can also benefit our
organization.

Tool Box Talk should be held at the start of the site, this sets in place a positive
health and safety culture, making workers aware of the health and safety risks
and hazards that they may face during their day at work. So they will apply the
control measures and start the work. To get an idea of the subjects we should
cover in our tool box talks, it is a good idea to take a walk around the site, and
identify the issues and hazards present, and the work being carried out. We
should also look to carry out Tool Box Talk based on accident records, as these
should highlight areas of concern - for example, if there have been a lot of slips
and trips, we might consider delivering a talk on good housekeeping. If there
have been a near miss happen, we might consider delivering a talk on that
subject.

Tool box talks should be interesting and not drag on, we need to get the
attention of our workforce and keep it - if nobody's listening then the exercise
is a waste of time. 10 minutes should be plenty of time to present the tool box
talk, and allow at least 5 minutes at the end for questions and feedback.

BENIFITS OF TOOL BOX TALK EFFECTIVENESS

If we successfully carry out the TBT in such a way then there will be very less
chances of incident occurrence at site. Competency of TPE, Supervisor,
Plumber & all the workers will increase. They will start to participate in the
discussion related to safety and understand the importance of Tool Box Talk.
Housekeeping at site will also be improved.

To get the best results from our tool box talk delivery, it is always better to be
proactive in our approach to health and safety. The main purpose of a Tool Box
Talk, to raise awareness before an accident has the chance to occur.
