“Who Am I”
2 Peter 3:16 ESV / 3 helpful votes
As he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in
them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction,
as they do the other Scriptures.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for
you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new
has come.
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he
promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was
descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power
according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for
the sake of his name among all the nations, ...
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children
of God,
The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When
Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth and said, “My
lords, please turn aside to your servant's house and spend the night and wash your feet. Then you
may rise up early and go on your way.” They said, “No; we will spend the night in the town
square.” But he pressed them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house. And he
made them a feast and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. But before they lay down, the men
of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the
house. And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to
us, that we may know them.” ...
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void,
and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of
the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light
was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the
darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. ...
Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual
immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of
eternal fire.
Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.
For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to
chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world,
but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon
the world of the ungodly; if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned
them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and if he
rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that
righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their
lawless deeds that he saw and heard); ...
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with
complete patience and teaching.
Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, understanding this, that the law is not
laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the
unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually
immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is
contrary to sound doctrine, in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with
which I have been entrusted.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of
God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has
called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the
immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his
great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his
right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and
above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all
things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, ...
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the
one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the
Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a
spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another's burdens,
and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he
deceives himself. But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in
himself alone and not in his neighbor. For each will have to bear his own load. ...
But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas
before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force
the Gentiles to live like Jews?” We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we
know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we
also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of
the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be
justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not!
For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. ...
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though
many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—
Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not
consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not
belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say,
“Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of
the body. ...
Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is
accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, but if a
woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering.
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be
deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice
homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit
the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified,
you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural
relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with
women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with
men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who
believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all
eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.
“Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just
as we have?”
And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because
the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. For they were hearing them
speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared,
And he said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to
visit anyone of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any person common
or unclean.
Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes
down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. And he rose and went. And there was an
Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of
all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning, seated in his chariot,
and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this
chariot.” So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you
understand what you are reading?” ...
But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But
because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the
truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to
you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world
concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in
me; ...
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the
Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You
know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through me.
As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who
sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this
man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work
the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as
I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” ...
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.
Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the
kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he
enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to
you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the
kingdom of God.”
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to
Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no
one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I
say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him,
“How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and
be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit,
he cannot enter the kingdom of God. ...
And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said
so.”
Nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of
you.”
But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, ‘Even the
dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the
kingdom of God has come near.’ I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than
for that town.
On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some
heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing
what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” And Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what
David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of
God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat,
and also gave it to those with him?” And he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the
Sabbath.”
And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the
children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people
prepared.”
And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” And he said to them,
“Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he
should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? But I tell you that Elijah has come, and
they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”
And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples
began to pluck heads of grain. And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing
what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did,
when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the
house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it
is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” And he
said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God,
And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” He
answered, “Elijah does come, and he will restore all things. But I tell you that Elijah has already
come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of
Man will certainly suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to
them of John the Baptist.
And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a
high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the
sun, and his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah,
talking with him.
And if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have
condemned the guiltless. For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”
At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, and
they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him,
“Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.” He said to them, “Have
you not read what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him: how he entered
the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for
those who were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not read in the Law how on the
Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless? ...
“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and
preach in their cities. Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word
by his disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?”
And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight
and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor
have good news preached to them. ...
As you enter the house, greet it. And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it
is not worthy, let your peace return to you. And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your
words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. Truly, I say to you,
it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for
that town.
“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers,
lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”
But in the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a horrible thing: they commit adultery and walk in
lies; they strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his evil; all of them have
become like Sodom to me, and its inhabitants like Gomorrah.”
Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom! Give ear to the teaching of our God, you people
of Gomorrah! “What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord; I have had enough
of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of well-fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or
of lambs, or of goats. “When you come to appear before me, who has required of you this
trampling of my courts? Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomination to me. New
moon and Sabbath and the calling of convocations— I cannot endure iniquity and solemn
assembly. Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates; they have become a burden
to me; I am weary of bearing them. ...
Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha
were on their way from Gilgal.
Then David came to Nob to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech came to meet David trembling
and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one with you?” And David said to Ahimelech the
priest, “The king has charged me with a matter and said to me, ‘Let no one know anything of the
matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.’ I have made an appointment
with the young men for such and such a place. Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me
five loaves of bread, or whatever is here.” And the priest answered David, “I have no common
bread on hand, but there is holy bread—if the young men have kept themselves from women.”
And David answered the priest, “Truly women have been kept from us as always when I go on
an expedition. The vessels of the young men are holy even when it is an ordinary journey. How
much more today will their vessels be holy?” ...
In those days, when there was no king in Israel, a certain Levite was sojourning in the remote
parts of the hill country of Ephraim, who took to himself a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.
And his concubine was unfaithful to him, and she went away from him to her father's house at
Bethlehem in Judah, and was there some four months. Then her husband arose and went after
her, to speak kindly to her and bring her back. He had with him his servant and a couple of
donkeys. And she brought him into her father's house. And when the girl's father saw him, he
came with joy to meet him. And his father-in-law, the girl's father, made him stay, and he
remained with him three days. So they ate and drank and spent the night there. And on the fourth
day they arose early in the morning, and he prepared to go, but the girl's father said to his son-in-
law, “Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and after that you may go.” ...
“None of the daughters of Israel shall be a cult prostitute, and none of the sons of Israel shall be a
cult prostitute. You shall not bring the fee of a prostitute or the wages of a dog into the house of
the Lord your God in payment for any vow, for both of these are an abomination to the Lord your
God.
The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil from
beaten olives for the lamp, that a light may be kept burning regularly. Outside the veil of the
testimony, in the tent of meeting, Aaron shall arrange it from evening to morning before the Lord
regularly. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. He shall arrange the lamps on
the lampstand of pure gold before the Lord regularly. “You shall take fine flour and bake twelve
loaves from it; two tenths of an ephah shall be in each loaf. ...
If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they
shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.
God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I am has
sent me to you.’” God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘The Lord, the God of
your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’
This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day
God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that
he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all
his work that he had done in creation. These are the generations of the heavens and the earth
when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. When no
bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the
Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, ...
And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?”
And he answered, “No.”

The disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.”
But he said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given.
For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made
eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the
kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.”
