1- Introduction:
1-1 Authorization
This geotechnical investigation report was prepared by SPARK ENGINEERING LABs
according to the request of Basrah Mas company . The purpose of this investigation was to
explore the subsoil condition under Umm Qasr Power Plant, in order to evaluate the soil .The
assignment was taken during Oct. 2018. The report contains the results of subsurface
exploration, laboratory’s tests as well as the analysis and the recommendations.
2- Site Exploration
2-1 Number & Depths of Boreholes
Ten boreholes were drilled in the site at locations assigned by the client as shown in App.E.
The boreholes were drilled down to (25.0 m) depth below the existing surface .
The samples were collected by using thin wall tube (Shelby tube) with (7.5 – 10.0 cm)
diameter and (50 – 60 cm) length to take undisturbed samples (U) , as per American Society
for Testing and Materials (ASTM D-1587-00) . Split spoon samples (SS) were obtained from the
boreholes by driving into the subsoil standard split spoon sampler which is used in Standard
Penetration Test (SPT) . The disturbed samples (D) were collected directly at several depth.

2-3 Standard Penetration Test (SPT)
This test has the advantages of simplicity, the availability of a wide variety of correlations
for its data, and the fact that a sample is obtainable with each test. A standard split barrel sampler
is advanced into the soil by dropping a 140-pound (63.5-kilogram) safety or automatic hammer
on the drill rod from a height of 30 inches (760 mm). The sampler is advanced a total of 18 inches
(450 mm). The number of blows required to advance the sampler for each of three 6-inch (150
mm) increments is recorded. The sum of the number of blows for the second and third increments
is called the Standard Penetration Value, or more commonly, N-value (blows per foot {300 mm}).
Tests shall be performed in accordance with ASTM D 1586.
3- Laboratory Tests
3-1 General
The samples were visually examined for initial classification before laboratory tests. The
geotechnical engineer decided the test program. The actual test proposed for a particular sample
depends on the type of sample (SS, U and D) and the nature of its material.

3-3 Atterberg Limits Determination
When a clayey soil is mixed with an excessive amount of water, it may flow like a semiliquid.
If the soil is gradually dried, it will behave like a plastic, semisolid, or solid material, depending on
its moisture content. The moisture content, in percent, at which the soil changes from a liquid to
a plastic state is defined as the liquid limit (LL). Similarly, the moisture content, in percent, at
which the soil changes from a plastic to a semisolid state and from a semisolid to a solid state
are defined as the plastic limit (PL). These limits are referred to as Atterberg limits .
• The liquid limit of a soil is determined by Casagrande’s liquid device (ASTM Test Designation
D-4318) and is defined as the moisture content at which a groove closure of 12.7 mm (1/2 in.)
occurs at 25 blows.
• The plastic limit is defined as the moisture content at which the soil crumbles when rolled into a
thread of 3.18 mm (1/8 in.) in diameter (ASTM Test Designation D-4318).
• The difference between the liquid limit and the plastic limit of a soil is defined as the plasticity
index (PI).
The moisture content (w) is defined as the ratio of the mass of water in a sample to the mass
of solids. The wet sample is weighed, and then oven-dried to a constant weight at a temperature
of about 230° F (110° C). The mass after drying is the mass of solids. The change in mass, which
has occurred during drying, is equivalent to the mass of water. For organic soils, a reduced drying
temperature of approximately 140° F (60° C) is sometimes recommended. Tests shall be
performed in accordance with ASTM D 2216.

• Hydrometer
This test is based on Stokes Law. The diameter of a soil particle is defined as the diameter
of a sphere which has the same unit mass and which falls at the same velocity as the particle.
Thus, a particle size distribution is obtained by using a hydrometer to measure the change in
specific gravity of a soil-water suspension as soil particles settle out over time.
The results are reported on a combined grain size distribution plot as the percentage of
sample smaller than, by weight, versus the log of the particle diameter. These data are necessary
for a complete classification of the soil. The curve also provides other parameters, such as
effective diameter (D10) and coefficient of uniformity (Cu). Tests shall be performed in
accordance with ASTM D 422.
3-6 Direct Shear Test
In this test a thin soil sample is placed in a shear box consisting of two parallel blocks and
a normal force is applied. One block remains fixed while the other block is moved parallel to it in
a horizontal direction. The soil fails by shearing along a plane that is forced to be horizontal. A
series of at least three tests with varying normal forces is required to define the shear strength
parameters for a particular soil. This test is typically run as a consolidated-drained test on
cohesionless materials. Tests shall be performed in accordance with ASTM D 3080.
3-7 Miniature Vane Shear (Torvane)
These tests are used only as an index of the un-drained shear strength (Cu) of clay samples
and should not be used in place of a laboratory test program. The test consists of hand-held
device that is pushed into the sample and either a torque resistance (torvane) is measured. It can
be performed in the lab or in the field, typically on the ends of undisturbed thin-walled tube
samples, as well as along the sides of test pits. Miniature vane shear tests shall be performed in
accordance with ASTM D 4648.
3-8 Unconfined Compression Test
While under no confining pressure, a cylindrical sample is subjected to an axial load until
failure. This test is only performed on cohesive soils. Total stress parameters are obtained. The
cohesion is taken as one-half the unconfined compressive strength, qu. This test is a fast and
economical means of approximating the shear strength at shallow depths, but the reliability is
poor with increasing depth. Tests shall be performed in accordance with ASTM D 2166.
Doc. No./ SEL/2018/0154 Issue Date/ Nov. -2018 Issue No./01 Page /7 of 15
3-9 Consolidation Test
This test method covers procedures for determining the magnitude and rate of consolidation
of soil when it is restrained laterally and drained axially while subjected to incrementally applied
controlled-stress loading. This test method is most commonly performed on undisturbed samples
of fine grained soils naturally sediment in water. The data from the consolidation test are used to
estimate the magnitude and rate of both differential and total settlement of a structure.
Consolidation test results are dependent upon the magnitude of the load increments.
Traditionally, the load is doubled for each increment resulting in a load-increment ratio of 1. For
undisturbed samples, this load procedure has provided data from which estimates of the pre-
consolidation pressure also referred to as the maximum past pressure, using established
evaluation techniques, compare directly with field measurement.
Consolidometer : A device to hold the specimen in a ring that is either fixed to the base or floating
(supported by friction on periphery of specimen) with porous disks on each face of the specimen.
The inside diameter of the ring shall be determined to a tolerance of 0.075 mm (0.003 in.). The
consolidometer shall also provide a means of submerging the specimen, for transmitting the
concentric vertical load to the porous disks, and for measuring the change in height of specimen
.The data from a consolidation test is usually presented on an e-log p curve, which plots void ratio
(e) as a function of the log of pressure (p), or an (ε-log p) curve where (ε) equals % strain. The
parameters necessary for settlement calculation can be derived from these curves: compression
index (Cc), recompression index (Cr), pre-consolidation pressure (Pc) and initial void ratio (eo).
All chemical tests were performed for soil and water samples as per (BS 1377 –clause 3,
1990), the type of chemical tests are mentioned in table 1.

4- Sub- Soil Stratification
4-1 Soil Layers Description
The subsoil layers, which were encountered during exploration, were presented in Boreholes
logs (App. A). The description of soil samples as per (ASTM D -2488 & ASTM D -2487) and
unified soil classification system (USCS). The subsoil profile can be summarized as follows:
The upper soil layer is a fill layer , which extends to about (1.5)m depth .The
next soil layers in general are cohesionless soil consist of silty sand (SM), poorly
graded sand (SP), well graded sand (SW), sometimes with silt (SP-SM),(SW-SM)
.The relative density for these layers is ranging between medium dense and very
dense. There are some cohesive soil layers were encountered within these
cohesinless soil layers at different depths , consist of silty clay with sand (CL) or
sandy silt (ML).The consistency of cohesive layers is ranging between very stiff and
hard. The upper soil layers down to about (5.0)meter depth is moderately to highly
gypsiferous .
4-2 Underground Water Level
The underground water level was observed during the exploration and it had been measured
after 24 hours of drilling, this level is about (4.0)m below the existing surface at (Oct. /2018) . It
may be changed during the coming seasons.
5- Recommendations
5-1 Allowable Bearing Capacity analysis
In the geotechnical engineering, the bearing capacity is the capacity of soil to support the
loads applied to the ground. The bearing capacity of soil is the maximum average contact
pressure between the foundation and the soil which should not produce shear failure in the soil.
The ultimate bearing capacity is defined as the pressure which would cause shear failure of the
supporting soil immediately below and adjacent to a foundation. Allowable bearing capacity is the
ultimate bearing capacity divided by a factor of safety. A factor of safety of 3 is commonly applied
Doc. No./ SEL/2018/0154 Issue Date/ Nov. -2018 Issue No./01 Page /9 of 15
to the value of qult. Care must be taken to ensure that a footing design is safe with regard to (1)
foundation failure (collapse) and (2) excessive settlement. The basic principles governing bearing
capacity theory as developed by Terzaghi (Terzaghi and Peck, 1967) can be better followed by
referring to Figure1 . As load (Q) is applied, the footing undergoes a certain amount of settlement
as it is pushed downward, and a wedge of soil directly below the footing’s base moves downward
with the footing. The soil’s downward movement is resisted by shear resistance of the foundation
soil along slip surfaces cde and cfg and by the weight of the soil in sliding wedges acfg and bcde.
For each set of assumed slip surfaces, the corresponding load Q that would cause failure can be
determined.
Doc. No./ SEL/2018/0154 Issue Date/ Nov. -2018 Issue No./01 Page /10 of 15
The set of slip surfaces giving the least applied load Q (that would cause failure) is the most
critical; hence, the soil’s ultimate bearing capacity (qult) is equal to the least load divided by the
footing’s area.
The following equations for calculating ultimate bearing capacity were developed by Terzaghi
(Terzaghi and Peck, 1967):
The Terzaghi bearing capacity factors(Nc ,Nq, Ng) are functions of the soil’s angle of internal
friction (f). The term in each equation containing Nc cites the influence of the soil’s cohesion on its
bearing capacity, the term containing Nq reflects the influence of surcharge, and that containing Ng
shows the influence of soil weight and foundation width or radius. The bearing capacity equation
can be written in general form by including the shape and inclination factors ( plus depth factors if
appropriate). Thus,

qult
ف
Where :
In a review of bearing capacity theory, Skempton concluded that in the case of saturated clays
under undrained conditions (fu = 0) the ultimate bearing capacity of a footing could be expressed
by the equation:
qult
The net ultimate bearing capacity qult (n) can be expressed by the equation :
Then ,The net allowable bearing capacity can be expressed by the equation :
Where :
Doc. No./ SEL/2018/0154 Issue Date/ Nov. -2018 Issue No./01 Page /12 of 15
For non-cohesive soil, Meyerhof (1956, 1974) published equations for computing the allowable
bearing capacity for a 25-mm settlement depends on SPT results as equation below , this equation
,also has been presented in (FIGURE 2) .
Where :
D= Depth of foundation
B = Width of foundation
FIGURE 2
:
Doc. No./ SEL/2018/0154 Issue Date/ Nov. -2018 Issue No./01 Page /13 of 15
Sometimes, on soft cohesive soil sites, large settlements may occur under loaded
foundations without actual shear failure occurring; in such cases, the allowable bearing capacity
is based on the maximum allowable settlement.
Depends on the above equations and settlement consideration, the allowable bearing
capacity has been estimated for shallow foundation is about (8.0 ton/m2) at (1.5) m below the
existing ground surface.
There is no available data provided regarding the structure dimensions and total applied
loads , however, shallow foundation can be used when the total applied loads will be not more
than the net allowable bearing capacity (8.0 ton/m2) . This foundation should be placed on sub
base materials (Type B) with (0.75)m thickness duo to moderately to highly gypsum content .
After compacting the original soil up to (95) % of the modified standard Proctor test, the sub base
materials should be compacted up to (95) % of the modified standard Proctor test, three layers
with (0.25)m thickness. If the total applied loads will be more than the net allowable bearing
capacity, it is recommended to use deep foundation (Piles).
Since the chemical tests indicate to presence of moderately to highly gypsum content ,
therefore some precautions should be adopted to maintain stability of structures against
collapse problems as follows:
1- Making water supply pipes which inside the buildings visible to detect any
probable leakage.
2- Avoid gardening nearby structures or it should be far away from foundations
stress zone and using sprinkling irrigation system only.
3- Prevent any seepage of surface water to reach the foundations by erecting
sides walks around buildings with (2.0 – 3.0) m width .

5-4 Type of Cement
• Sulphate Resisting Cement (Type V) is recommended to use for foundation.
• Minimum cement content and the Maximum free (water / cement) ratio should be within the
requirements of the specifications.
• Adequate coating of inert materials such as asphalt should protect all concrete works that are
in contact with subsoil.
