“operational issues” of Immigration
New Zealand.
“This is an operational issue of
Immigration New Zealand. They
are taking it seriously, but it is their
responsibility to sort this out,” Mr
Lees-Galloway told The Indian
Weekender.
The Minister was at The Indian
Weekender’s studio on Monday,
July 15, to respond to some of the
teething immigration issues that the
Kiwi-Indian community has been
facing lately, of which unexplained
delays in visa processing times was
of significant concern. 
“Let’s not lose sight of the fact that
INZ has taken a million decisions on
visas over the last year.
“They are experiencing a record
volume across all of the categories,
and a lot of visas are decided in a
timely fashion.
“I am concerned about visa
processing times. I have written

hen further quizzed about
INZ’s perceived selective

“INZ is responding to consistency
issues on visa applications by
restructuring their processes.
“INZ have restructured all of
the visa categories in the way they
process applications. What they are
now doing is particular office focus
on a particular category of visa
“The idea is that they can bring
more consistency to the decision
making,” Mr Lees-Galloway asserted
backing INZ.
However, what it does imply is
that in the pursuit of “consistency
in decision-making” the INZ is
failing to deliver the service in a
timely manner – at least this is the
perception that is going out in the
community.
Many members of the public
watching interview live on The
Indian Weekender’s web portal,
and subsequently speaking
over the phone, expressed their
disillusionment with the explanation
on delays in visa processing.
“Used to be three months but now
god knows,” asked one exasperated
member of public on social media
post.
“Why the processing is slowing
down as the operational people are
still the same in this government,”
following up with an exclamatory
assertion.
Sharing their growing frustration
on the partnership-visa delays, one
social media user Dev Patel said, “I
m coming up to six months for my
wife’s visa.”
“Yeah, I am also waiting for more

visa,” Priyanca Patel, another
member of public shared their
frustration on the Minister’s response
on the explanation for the delay in
visa processing.
Another social media user
Mandeep Taheem shared sentiments
by posting a comment, “INZ website
says that 95 per cent of partnership-
based visa will take 45 days to come
up to a decision and my wife visa is
still not allocated to case officer yet.”
However, the Minister rightly
remaining oblivious to those
frustrations, expressed satisfaction
in INZ’s response to the delay in visa
processing times.

exclusive interview on Monday, July
16, discussing how New Zealand’s
economy was fairing under the
current government.
“It will be our immediate focus
to reduce that increased cost that
New Zealanders have faced in the
last twenty months of coalition
government rule,” Mr Goldsmith
said.
“We left the economy in good
shape where we were growing
strongly and providing opportunities
to people of all background to get
ahead.
“However, there has been a
sharp decline under the current
government, and this is not my word,
but the words of Reserve Bank of
New Zealand,” Mr Goldsmith opined
about the current state of affairs of
the NZ economy.

a decision on the parent category
visa, Immigration Minister
Iain Lees-Galloway told The Indian
Weekender in an exclusive interview on
Monday July 15.
The parent category visa was
suspended in 2016 during the National

the same was started last year to make a
decision when to reopen that category.
The parent visa allowed parents of an
immigrant living in New Zealand living as a
resident or a citizen but was suspended on the
context that it created a burden on the taxpayers.
The consultation that started last year is said
to have finished, but the government is yet to
come to a decision.
Speaking to The Indian Weekender, Minister
Iain Lees-Galloway said, “I understand there
has been a bit of frustration on not having
the decision on that yet and I appreciate
the patience.
“There is a lot for the government to weigh
up- both ‘for and against’ the parent visa
category but I am keen to get a decision soon,”
Minister Lees-Galloway added.
Minister Lees-Galloway acknowledged that

waiting for a long time and need an assurance
of its future, and he is keen to get it sorted soon.

to the 2017 elections there was a huge public
outcry around the net migration rates and the
promises of reducing net immigration by 20-
30,000 a year.
It was first in April 2017 that the then
Labour leader Andrew Little had vowed to
slash immigration by “tens of thousands” of

The Black Caps won
– by a billion hearts

I
don’t believe the Black Caps truly lost the
ICC World Cup final last Sunday. They
were robbed of their victory, plain and
simple by a whole cocktail of factors. I think
every Black Caps supporter and true-blue Kiwi
will agree with me on this.
A nail-biter of a contest that went to the
wire and beyond with tied scores (not without
a controversy that will rage on forever) and
a tied super over score (which would have
been unnecessary had the umpires been more
circumspect). Only to be decided by a bizarre
rule basing the winner on the number of
boundaries scored. What were they thinking
when they wrote this rule?
And why just base it on the number of
boundaries? Why not wickets? Catches?
Runouts? It’s just plain absurd. Who made
these rules? And who agreed to them? Why not
decide on a more rational yardstick based on
who lost more wickets getting to that first tied
score (Black Caps lost 8; England were all out),
which would really be the fairest way to deal
with the situation.
After all, declaration of wins in all forms of
cricket are always by either runs or wickets.
So, if the runs were tied, why not see who lost
most wickets while getting to the tied score?
Such a rule would most definitely be fairer and
far more rational than the sheer absurdity of
awarding the win on who got more boundaries.
Then there is the more serious issue, though
controversial again, of an extra run awarded by
the umpires when Guptill’s throw got deflected
to the boundary. It should have been five runs
– not six, say many of the world’s cricketing
gurus and expert commentators.
And this is to say nothing of Ross Taylor’s
wrong lbw decision by Umpire Murray
Erasmus as seen from TV replays. Sadly, the
Black Caps had no remaining reviews at that
time. But then that’s the nature of the beast
that’s cricket.
However, the amazing grace with which our
beloved Black Caps led by Kane Williamson,
the coolest-headed skipper in world cricket,
dealt with this most unfortunate situation
for them as well as all Kiwis everywhere,
has made them legends and won them all the

world’s hearts. Everywhere they have been
acknowledged and feted as the real winners.

There couldn’t have been a more appropriate

on school term break for

and 14 enrolled and
participated in the
seven-day event of fun

The Holiday Program
was arranged in the indoors
of Bhartiya Samaj Community
Hall on May Road.
The children started their days with a
fun jump-jam session and followed by a healthy
breakfast, and had a day full of stimulating
activities designed primarily to enhance their
interpersonal development, teamwork skills,
creative abilities and to explore and appreciate the
nuances of different cultures.
The programme featured special appearances
by the New Zealand Police gave an interactive
presentation and discussion on around bullying,
cyber-bullying, and traffic & road rules.
The children were presented with ideas for
personal safety and wellbeing and learned ways
of keeping safe on the road, and measures on
ensuring personal safety against strangers both in
real life and on the cyberspace.

he consumers price index (CPI) rose
0.6 percent in the June 2019 quarter,
due to higher prices for petrol and rent,
Stats NZ said today.
In the year to June 2019, the inflation rate
was 1.7 percent, up from 1.5 percent in the
March 2019 year.
Petrol prices rose 5.8 percent in the June
2019 quarter after a 7.0 percent fall in the
March 2019 quarter.
The average price of 91 octane petrol was
$2.13 a litre this quarter, up from $2.01 last
quarter, but still under its peak of $2.18 in the
September 2018 quarter.
“Petrol prices rose slowly over the first part
of the quarter, reaching a peak in late May
and then falling,” prices senior manager Paul
Pascoe said.
“By the last week of June, the petrol pump
price was 2.0 percent lower than the June
quarter average.”
While the petrol price rise was the largest
contributor to quarterly inflation, many other
transport items fell. Price falls for second-hand
cars, along with seasonal falls for domestic air
fares and rental cars, offset the petrol price rise.
Used car prices fell 3.9 percent in the June
2019 quarter, compared with a 3.3 percent fall
in the same quarter last year. This quarter’s
prices are the lowest since the December 2015

New methodology for rental prices in the
CPI explains the new method and compares this
with the previous one used.
Construction prices have slowed down,
rising 0.7 percent for the second quarter in a
row. This has reduced the annual increase to
just 3.5 percent, the lowest it has been since the
March 2013 quarter.
“The fall in construction price inflation is
consistent with construction activity having
slowed down since its peak in 2016,” Mr
Pascoe said.

launch of the Government’s plan for
developing a safe, innovative and
thriving drone sector in New Zealand.
Taking Flight: an aviation system for the
automated age outlines the benefits drones can
deliver for New Zealand and the Government’s
vision for safely integrating the technology into
the existing transport system.
AirShare is the drone management subsidiary
of Airways, New Zealand’s air traffic control
provider.
“AirShare’s role is to provide some of the
key infrastructure and tools that are needed
by the drone sector to safely make the vision a
reality,” AirShare CEO Trent Fulcher says.
An unmanned aerial vehicle traffic
management system, known as UTM, is central
to drones being able to fly safely alongside
traditional aircraft. AirShare is building a UTM
system for New Zealand and has already taken
the first step, launching a mobile app that makes
it easier for drone users to find out about rules
and log flights. AirShare’s 14,000 registered
app users can now see where they can fly, file a
flight plan and gain approvals in real time.

and 235,200 New Zealand resident

arrivals were up 1.5 percent.

decreases in arrivals from China (down 2,800)

May 2018, only 0.9 percent lower than the peak in
December 2017. The drop in arrivals from India
may reflect less international travel due to the
election in India held in April and May this year.
Rises in arrivals of New Zealand residents from
trips to Australia (up 2,100), the United Kingdom
(up 1,500), and the Philippines (up 1,000) were
partly offset this month by falls in arrivals from
trips to the USA (down 1,800) and the Cook
Islands (down 1,000).
Annual visitor arrivals remain stable while New
Zealand resident travel up across the board

the mobile phone used to control the drone.
“Registration is a first step towards safe
integration that could be achieved relatively
quickly,” Mr Fulcher says. “This approach is
currently the most effective way to identify
and educate drone users, many of who may
be new to aviation and unaware of their
responsibilities.”
Mandatory registration is currently in place
in the United States, with the requirements
being implemented in Europe.

will accept.
Therefore, the Gandhi family is a beautiful cementing factor in Congress

Arjun Singh, Sharad Power, Karunakaran, Narasimha Rao, and many others
had not shied away from showing their leadership ambitions. It’s another matter
that the then Congress Working Committee had unanimously requested Sonia
Gandhi to be the next leader.
Although Sonia politely refused the offer - it can be called a positive ‘No’. The
next question was who would-be leader. Narasimha Rao became the leader, but
only after Sonia Gandhi had endorsed that.
In today’s acute crisis in Congress, will Priyanka Gandhi come to the rescue
of the Party? Or can a senior leader be the working president as of now? Or will
a young leader be made the full-time president?

Princess Diana

four-year-old Australian boy has bizarrely claimed to be the
reincarnation of Britain's Princess Diana.
The boy's father, a noted Australian television presenter, has said
that his son believes he is the reincarnated embodiment of Diana, a UK
media report said. Billy Campbell, son of Australian TV personality David
Campbell, was born 18 years after the princess's death in a car crash in
1997. The bemused father said: "Billy (aged two at this time) pointed and
said, 'Look! It's me when I was a princess'," when he spotted Diana on a
card. However, David goes on to say that the kid's obsession with Diana
didn't stop there.

has been terminated and employees working on it have been
reportedly reassigned. The controversial Chinese search engine previously
in development by Google that raised privacy, censorship, and human rights
concerns is finally, officially, no more, mashable.com on Tuesday quoted
Karan Bhatia, Google's vice president of global government affairs and
public policy, as saying. Responding to questions from Republican Senator
Josh Hawley, the top Google executive said: "We have terminated Project
Dragonfly."
This unequivocal response is a departure from previous couched
statements by Google executives regarding Dragonfly's status. For example,
in December, chief executive Sundar Pichai told Congress that "right now
there are no plans for us to launch a search product in China", the report
added.
Meanwhile, the tech giant's offices in the US, UK, Canada, India, Mexico,
Chile, Argentina, Sweden, Switzerland, and Denmark have witnessed
protests by human rights groups over its plan to re-enter China through the
censored search application.

kids. Disney’s 1994 film The
Lion King is what they call a
‘wholesome family movie.’
The tear-jerking moments,
the wonderful songs and the
overarching theme of finding
oneself and embracing life’s
struggles with acceptance and even love make the Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff directorial —
a classic. It has been years since I first watched the Disney film, but the Simba-Mufasa story
has stayed fresh in my heart. Mufasa is a gentle giant who is faithful to his subjects and is
respectful of every animal in Pride Rock. When his son, the adorable Simba, is born, he begins
to prepare him for the throne and the big, bad world via a few misadventures and some nuggets
of wisdom. However, one fine day, through a cruel twist of fate, Mufasa meets his death in a
stampede and Simba, blaming himself, runs away from the sight of all things familiar. And then
things unravel in a big dramatic fashion, Disney style.
One of the most emotional moments for the audience is when Mufasa meets his death and
young Simba tries to revive his dead body and gently weeps under the arm of his father. The
sequence is touching and extremely humane in its treatment.
However, nothing has stood the test of time like The Lion King’s incredible soundtrack.
