Lesson Plan Day 3

Introduction to Fractions

Topic: Equal shares from a whole Grade Level: 2 Name: Samantha Dube

Lesson Type: New material Performance Level: on Group Size: 2 and 3 students

Standard/s: Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares
using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three
thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.

Objective/s: Students will be able to accurately identify shapes and divide them into halves, thirds,
and quarters, 4 out of 5 times.

Assessment plan for each objective: Using their poster boards students will be asked to partition
circles and rectangles into halves, thirds, and quarters of the shape. The student will be asked to
separate circle cut outs into equally sized partitions piles and into those that are not equally
partitioned.

Key vocabulary terms and definitions:

Whole- all parts of the item.

Equal parts- all the parts that make up a whole have to be divided into equal shapes, big or small.

Partition-dividing

Materials: 7 poster boards with circle and rectangle shapes.

7 circle practice worksheets.

7 rectangle worksheets.

Rectangle Cake cut out.

Circle cut outs to put into piles equal and unequal partitions.

Paper, pencil and scissors.

Extension worksheets for fast finishers.

Differentiation/Accommodations:

Extend: More hands on exploration and challenging questions. Delaini and Evelyn are fast
finishers. They will be given a worksheet to continue practicing halves, thirds and fourths. They will be
asked to circles pizzas that have been partitioned into halves, thirds and fourths. If they finish early
again the assistant teacher will ask them to draw more challenging partitions of circles and rectangles
from fifths to twelfths.

Support: we have 3 teachers. One will teach and the others will sit and support the student
Savannah and Peston struggles more, so they will be strategically seated near the teacher that is
teaching. When she sees them struggling she can repeat instruction and help them with the areas
they are struggling with and the support teacher can give the extension to the students who are
ahead.
