Cable design and costing
C2 supports the entire business process from design, process planning and
costing to the release for manufacture of routings, BOMs and test plans.
As your company‘s central product data management system, C2 provides
the technical master data for production planning, materials management,
manufacturing, quality assurance and sales. Manufacturing costs are
calculated while the technical product data are being compiled, thus en-
abling the basic commercial data for the preparation of quotations, the
preliminary calculation of manufacturing orders and standard product
costing to be available.
C2 is the central know-how database for design, industrial engineering,
quality assurance and technical sales. The common database supports
standardized business processes and avoids errors caused by incon-
sistent data. An easy-to-learn formula editor makes it possible to compile
company-specific rules, standards and decision tables.
One of C2’s most important features is its high level of flexibility for
individual adjustments. Users can change all the calculation instructions
(formulae) and print documents (e.g. data sheets) as they wish. The facility
for free definition of design models for product families which can then be
used as templates for design, enables users to set up and update company-
specific design standards themselves.

PRODUCT DATA MANAGE
CABLE DESIGN
In C2 the geometric structure of a cable and the raw materials to
be used in its manufacture are specified in a design BOM which is
generated largely automatically on the basis of an extensive know-how
database.
In the C2 material database wires, compounds, additives, tapes, etc.
are managed together with their geometric, mechanical and electrical
properties. The detailed classification of the materials and powerful
search functions enable the rapid selection of the usable components.
The concept of the modular BOM applied consistently in C2 ensures the
reusability of structural elements such as conductors, cores and pairs.
The use of prefabricated design models for product families increases
efficiency thanks to easy access to the design know-how (framework
designs, standards, formulae, decision tables, etc.) stored centrally
in C2.
With the Cable Designer’s Workbench C2 enables graphic
interactive design:
• Scalable cross-sectional graphics with true-to-scale representation
and positioning of the components used
• Representation of special asymmetric cables with automatic
calculation of center point and diameter.
• Direct access to designs and master material data of the components
used including a modification facility and automatic calculation of the
impacts on the current design.
• Drawing elements, texts and legend function for auxiliary lines,
dimensioning and labeling within the graphic.
GEMENT FOR MODERN CABLE MANUFACTURING
BOM & ROUTING
BOMs and routings are generated fully automatically on the basis of
the design data. The machines are selected according to technical and
economic criteria which can be defined by the user.
The individual lengths to be manufactured and the added quantities
for the material in the BOM are determined by the length calculation
performed for each machine operation. After that C2 calculates the
machine-specific take-up speeds and manufacturing times (primary,
setup and secondary process times). It provides numerous possibilities
for the use of time management methods. Even the instruction texts for
the production order papers are generated fully automatically.
In order to make best use of the flexibility potential of the plant in
production planning it is necessary to be familiar with the technically
possible production alternatives. C2 therefore makes it possible to
draw up several alternative routings for a single product. Alternative
operations and alternative machines can be used within a single
routing, and the alternative routings can be compared regarding the
manufacturing costs.
C2 enables multi-plant environments. Manufacture of a product at more
than one site using different machinery and site-specific raw material
variants requires only a single design which is then used for gene-
rating the plant-specific routings and manufacturing BOM. This makes
C2 the ideal tool for central product management providing the manu-
facturing and costing data for decentralized cable plants.
COSTING
Calculation of the manufacturing costs of a cable takes place by lot size,
delivery length and drum type on the basis of the previously generated
routing. Price lists with quantity scales can be generated automatically.
C2 calculates the material costs for each item of the BOM including the
manufacturing-related allowances and breaks down the manufacturing
costs according to freely definable activity types. In addition, individual
calculation schemes can be specified for the representation of the cost
structure according to company-specific standards.
The costing archive enables automatic version control of the calculation
results and simplifies the analysis of the cost development. Professional
quotation documents with individual layouts can be created with the
help of the integrated report generator.
TEST PLAN
C2 manages the QC test plans for the incoming goods inspection,
in-process control (self-inspection) and final inspection of the finished
products.
The test and inspection characteristics are compiled with the systema-
tic use of framework test plans and an extensive catalog of standard
test features. The formula editor makes the connection to the required
design values. Manual input and updating of the design values is un-
necessary. This ensures that the test plan is up to date at all times, even
in case of design changes.
COMPOUND RECIPES
The integrated recipe management makes it possible to develop
recipes for the manufacture of insulation and sheath compounds.
A recipe can be broken down into sections in which the materials to be
placed together in the mixer are grouped together. From the recipe data
C2 automatically generates the routing and the documents (manufac-
turing instruction, recipe sheet) for manufacture. This also includes the
scaling of the recipe to batch sizes to suit the mixer used.
VARIANT GENERATOR
The variant generator automates the creation and maintenance of cable
designs, routings, BOMs and cost calculations. The variants of a product
family are specified once on a table sheet and can then be generated
a new or updated by the press of a button. This is a considerable pro-
ductivity plus as regards the creation and maintenance of product data,
particularly where mass data changes such as design changes, exchange
of materials and updating of machine output parameters are concerned.
