PEEG 315 Lab #-4

Introduction to Petrel Software

Laboratory Exercise

Name:

Student ID:

PEEG 315 Lab #-4 Jorge Gomes

1. Aim

The primarily objective of this laboratory exercise is for the student to learn how to use Petrel
software. It is a quick overview of Petrel utilities, windows, file structure and workflows to be
followed.

The second objective, also important, is for the student to be able to do the quality control on the
dataset to be imported into Petrel. Students have to generate their own ASCII files from Excel or
other sources, before importing into Petrel.

At the end of this class the student will be acquainted with the following:

• Identify the data types required for geological modelling

• How to quality control the dataset, prior to importing into Petrel
• To convert EXCEL data into flat ASCII files
• How to edit the ASCII files and add a file header
• How to create a Project in Petrel and set up the settings for coordinates, units etc
• How to import ASCII data into Petrel using multiple data formats (well header, point
sets, lines etc)
• How to visualize data in Petrel and adjust the settings

An Excel sheet and ASCII files (deviation data plus line data (fault, polygons etc), will be given
to the student. The dataset is the same as used in Labs# 1-3.

The above slide only shows the first window when Petrel in Launched. The remaining slides for
this Lab session are in a different presentation. (see Lab#-4A Introduction to Petrel, stored in L
drive).

The initial workflow is as follows:

1)- Create Project and set the parameters (units). At the well level you have to specify either
“UWI” or “Well Name”
2)- Import well header information (well names, X, Y, TD, KB, well symbol). The format

available in PETREL is “wellheads”
3)- Import deviation data. The format available in PETREL is “Header, Deviation”. You can
import the following formats: 1)- TVD, DX, DY or MD, INC, AZ
4)- The next step is to load the log data in LAS format.
5)- You can then load well tops, fault polygons, SEG-Y (seismic data) etc.

Good Luck
