C. Abstraction

Direct vs. Indirect speech

- Two ways of saying what someone else said in the past.

- Consider the example;

Last weekend, some friends and I were planning to go see a movie. But, one friend, Ben couldn’t join us.

Ben said, “ I have a dental appointment this evening.”

Here, Ben’s words repeated exactly or directly without making any changes. This is called DIRECT
SPEECH. However, we do not always repeat the other person’s words exactly, because the words are not
important; THE MESSAGE is important.

So, we can say it like this instead:

Ben said that he had a dental appointment that evening. INDIRECT SPEECH/ REPORTED SPEECH.

Direct speech and indirect speech

- Direct speeches always have quotation marks around the original words not like in INDIRECT
SPEECHES.
- The word ‘that’ is used in indirect speech.

Changing direct to indirect speech and vice versa using the different tenses of verbs.

1. change the pronouns

2. Backshift the tense.
3. Change the time and place expressions.

Examples:

tense Direct speech Indirect speech

Simple tense Sarah said, “I drink black coffee Sarah said that she drank black
every morning.” coffee every morning.
Progressive tense Naveen said, “ I am learning to Naveen said that he was learning
play the guitar.” to play the guitar.
Perfect tense “I have seen the movies three I explained that I had seen the
times already,” I explained. movie three times already.

Note: when we backshift a direct speech in SIMPLE PAST / PAST PROGRESSIVE the verb must be change
into PAST PERFECT in indirect speech.

Example:

DS: “Hema didn’t come to work yesterday,” the manager told me.

IS: The manager told me that Hema hadn’t come to work the previous day/ the day before.
