BACKGROUND
Hypertensive Response on Exercise (HRE) is one of prognostic outcome frequently found at Exercise
Stress Test (EST), which associated with future hypertension. The cause of HRE are still uncertain
which maybe related with traditional risk factors that causing hypertension, one of them is Body
Mass Index (BMI).
PURPOSE
To investigate whether BMI have correlation on patients that developed HRE during Exercise Stress
Test
METHODS
Cross-sectional analytic study was done with the data derived from Budhi Asih Cardiovascular
Outpatient Database. Samples are adult patients which underwent exercise stress test and
echocardiography on same visit during April 2017-December 2018. BMI classified as normoweight
(BMI 18.5-22.9 kg/m2), overweight (BMI 23.0-24.9), and obese (BMI ≥ 25.0). Meanwhile HRE
defined as elevated SBP ≥210 mmHg or DBP elevated >10 mmHg from the beginning of exercise.
Correlation analyzed using bivariate analysis was done to find correlation between BMI and HRE
from patients that underwent the tests.
RESULTS
From total 29 patients that fulfilled the criteria, 6 patients (20.7%) are normoweight, 6 patients
(20.7%) are overweight, and 17 patients (58.6%) are obese. While 14 patients (48.3%) had negative
hypertensive response and 15 patients (51.7%) had positive hypertensive response. Correlation study
using bivariate analysis was done, shown the positively significant correlation between BMI and
HRE (r = 0.625, p < 0.05)
CONCLUSION
BMI has proven to be linked with HRE. Bigger studies and samples are required to strengthen the
correlation between BMI and HRE in order to find the etiology and risk factors of HRE.
